Hi Everyone! This is my first Journal entry so go easy…. (please) I have submitted a photograph entitled ‘Wasteland’ to the group and I thought I’d like to tell you a little about the place. I used to live on the edge of Leicester which is a large(ish) city with all that that entails. The wasteland of the photo is actually in the heart of the city – and no-one knows it’s there! / An abandonned railway line, the Great Central Way, has been converted into a public walk/cycle path connecting the city to the suburbs and it’s very popular. The photo shows an old siding that isn’t visible from any part of the the GCW or, as far as I could make out from any other place or occupied building. I found it one evening while walking home along GCW; I could smell a truly delicious/gorgeous/stunning/heavenly (you choose your favourite adjective) scent wafting subtly on the warm evening air. I stopped awhile, delighted. Then I cast about trying to locate the source… Eventually, after leaving the GCW, pushing through some hedgerows and negotiating a broken-down fence I found myself in the siding which was abloom with Evening Primroses – the source of the scent! This place quickly became my Secret Garden, my oasis midst the city grime and I spent many, many happy days and evenings just sitting or wandering there with the only other visitors from the hustle and bustle world being a few dogs taking a few minutes break from walking their owners! By day it was a haven for butterflies and myriad other insects – their drone and hum almost succeeding in drowning out the more discordant noises of city life. By night it came alive with moths, bats, hedgehogs, mice and a fox family. In their season I have watched a mother pheasant taking her brood of chicks for their first foraging lessons and charms of Goldfinches feeding on the thistle seedheads. One evening I was even treated to the sight of a family of weasels sneaking sinuously around, nose-to-tail and looking like a great russet snake. With each passing season Nature reclaimed this land a little more. Strangely, I never felt the urge to photograph, paint or otherwise document this land and it was only when I was moving away that I took this picture. Now I live several hundred miles away from my oasis and I miss it! I miss the scent of the Evening Primroses and I miss the glimpses into the lives of it’s small inhabitants. One day (soon) I shall take my two children back to where I used to live and I shall show them what I was privileged to see.

  • Fallout: the game

So someone sitting behind a computer screen reading a p…

So someone sitting behind a computer screen reading a policy sheet and never thinking of something imaginative in their entire life really pissed me off today and has earned my ire…and I need you help. / Let me start off with saying: do you know what Fallout is? / Fallout is a game about a post-nuclear holocaust world where the world that has survived is a savage, brutal and dirty place that is a constant battle for survival every day, but there has also been a large group of survivors in underground shelters designed to support life for hundreds of years and indefinitely in some cases. These shelters are known as vaults and are not exactly what they appear to be. / Anyway, the story is WIDE and enormous and is breath taking if you really get into it. / The button jockey that pissed me off today sent me a generalized “smeg off” e-mail. I had sent Bethesda an e-mail query some time ago asking them if there was a fan kit or other similar material package I could download for a fan-made RPG I was writing under the terms of fair use. The return e-mail threatened to sue me for writing such a book and that there was no way Bethesda was considering licensing Fallout at this time or in the perceivable future…not what I asked. / I know the setup, I have the system, everything is ready…but I am only one man and I am now a pissed off man. / SO / I need to enlist good, solid, dedicated and bat-shit crazy gamer geeks who know and love Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and Fallout 3. I need a few good men and women to help me build an archive of ALL the Fallout literature, canon, history and more. I need Fallout fan-made artwork and anything else people can think of. / This is a free project and I don’t expect it to take long once I have the info in front of me again. I know the world and story, I just don’t have all the info and I could really use a hand with the art. Once its done, I’m going to release it as a free-to-download fan-made PDF and if I can get a lawyer to give me the nod, a 0% profit print-on-demand book as well. / For all the Fallout fans and just general people who like making dirty pretty things and whacked out textures and stuff…uncle sham needs you! And for those of you who prefer the more public forums to comment on UPDATE: Things are looking up. As it turns out, Bethesda gave me such a venemous answer because they clain to own Fallout in all respects, but a it turns out, they don’t! Interplay owns the rights to the previous games and the Fallout universe as a whole. The two are currently involved in a bloody legal battle royale over Fallout and Interplay’s rights and affairs in the matter. Not a great time to hit up the IPR owner, but screw it, I’ve never been one for good timing. I have contacted Interplay regarding licensing Fallout officially to make an RPG of the game…if successful, I will be HIRING people to help get the project done right.
