Common Redpoll (male) on a spruce branch during a moment of late sun (in his warm coat of feathers). Among the smallest of Alaska’s birds at between 5 and 5.5 inches in length, redpolls are sparrowlike in appearance, with red splotches or caps on their heads and small black bibs. Males also sport pinkish breasts. They can endure the extreme cold of Alaskan winters partly because of a specially adapted seed-storage system: While feeding, they stockpile some seeds in an esophageal pouch, or crop, a feature shared with other finches. Through the nights, which in winter may last 20 hours or more, redpolls eat and gradually digest the seeds stored in their pouches. The birds also have dense winter plumage they fluff for added insulation. Their core body temperature remains about 105 degrees, even when the air temperature drops as low as 58 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. So these tiny creatures can maintain a temperature 163 degrees warmer than the air. Says animal physiologist Pierre DeViche of Arizona State University, who has conducted arctic research, “Think if you could make a coat with that sort of insulative ability. It’s incredible, really.” A group of redpolls is collectively known as a “gallup” of redpolls. (from identifywhat.bird.com) Featured in Wildlife-Appeal – Thank you! Digging in my old store I just found a shot which all those of you might like who have become fans of my magic light shots in the forests here around Hilversum. This one was taken in September 2007 and to me is ever so suggestive: a warm dreamlike morning comes back to my mind! / Ah, to think of such mornings … ! And of such light …! Warming your heart and your soul. Not an everyday experience, certainly not, but they shall come again! Fell in deep like with Jake the Clydesdale on a visit to a working farm. He got bored after the carrots ran dry and wandered off in disgust. So, here he is, set free on a beach & processed with love. A tribute to all the pretty horses and the peace they breathe into our battered souls.
This image was taken at a friends home, same place that some of you may remember from “Silent Night” or “Sound of Silence”. She has a great art and antique collection, her home just screams to be photographed, (she painted the painting over the fireplace). I tried a little something new with long exposures and LOVE the ghost like silhouettes. You have to view this in large format to see them!!! And there are no ducks in this shot! “Gift of Love” is the English Translation from Hawaiian. I have photographed this family for many years as they grow and expand; three generations of loving images. The father is a working ranch hand on Maui’s large Ka’ono’ulu Ranch. Yes, a real Hawaiian cowboy—known here as a paniolo. Funny story: I submitted this image to iStockphoto knowing its value in stock would be huge. Well, like most of my submissions, it was rejected. This time they called it PORNOGRAPHY!!!! I almost had to laugh…. and cry. Well, at this point I am glad it it not in the public domain as stock. I’ll wait for the perfect client to come along and do this image proud!

I stood in the snow behind the tripod, so quietly that one bird landed on my lens! What joy. I couldn’t actually say we bonded, but I was thrilled. I’ve had birds land on my hat, but never one that I could see so closely. Featured in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams – Thank you! Shot in RAW. Slight curves adjustment, at the suggestion of Eivor. The snowfall made it necessary to bump up the ISO to 320. I tried ISO 640 at one point, but those looked a tad grainy. This is a male Common Redpoll in today’s snowfall. Note snowflake on his back. Our area has so far eluded Mt. Redoubt’s harsh volcanic particles, although Alaska Airlines and FedEx had to suspend all flights in and out yesterday. Captured 12/13/2008 on a very frigid morning at Cherry Creek State Park, here in Colorado, I froze my damn keester off because I was dense and forgot to bring along my damn jacket! It was an incredible sunrise folks, one which I won’t forget, the colors changed and developed by the minute, going from the cool blues to the warm pinks, reds, and oranges…and I was able to get something in the shots which I had never had been able to before, the lake actually shimmering! In some of the other shots in days to come, you can really see this, and you kind of can here in the bottom left side a tad, an odd occurrence, and one I finally managed to snag! Long exposure, using my Singh-Ray CPL and Marumi ND4, on my Minolta 18-70 DT Lens, I hope ya all like it, let me know what ya think! / —-John !
