  • I love the C.S. Lewis tales, particularly “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” This cardinal image reminds me of the two worlds the four children encountered when they stepped into the wardrobe and then stepped out into Narnia, the dreamy world beyond earth. I changed the background which the cardinal is looking toward into the dreamy other-worldliness of Narnia while keeping the cardinal on the branch in the tangible (more textured) material world as we know it. Hope I got my point across, Cardinal Inspired by C. S. Lewis. If you’ve never read Lewis’ seven book series, The Chronicles of Narnia, treat yourself to some of the best stories ever written! • Walking up Memory Lane… When my sister was doing her Fashion Design Degree…she use to ask me when I was a teenager to model for her assignments. And she had very creative assignments…this one she had me in the wardrobe…others she had me with mud on face, holding ducks, wearing wedding dresses…it was always the unexpected. This one was taken for an assignment where she had to illustrate a song with a photo. I was 17 years old.

  • Finally, the 12th in the series. (a bit of a snazz up for the December page of my calendar).

It’s not a new idea really, nor is it unique, but I wonder what inspiration awaits us behind a wardrobe door? So often the anticipation of that closed door inspires trepidation, even fear. Monsters Inc put the whole concept to fantastic use – although in reverse! And anyone who has had to clean out a wardrobe of a lifetime of accumulation could have surprises awaiting them. I remember one day my mother cleaning out an old green “built in robe” arrangement in my bedroom that we were planning to rip down. I think I was 10 at the time. There was a hat box with an old black top hat, my grandfather’s apparently. The wardrobe also had an ill-concealed false bottom and inside there was a plastic shopping bag with a pair of shoes. They weren’t just any old shoes. They were the very leather shoes my father was wearing when he was only 18-years-old and the crane load he was helping to jockey hit powerlines. He had 250,000 volts travel through his body, burning lower legs and his left arm to a cinder. Miraculously, Dad survived the horrific accident and at 82 he’s still kicking with the best of them (just that his kicks are from fibreglass rather than flesh). Mum knew what the bag contained and pulled the shoes out to show me. They didn’t look gruesome. They were very clean and shiny, except for the huge holes in the toes with the leather fibres bursting outwards. And the soles had black lightning streaks across them almost in a “comic strip” lightning pattern. Such a strange keepsake! / (I think they have since been thrown away.) I’ve written a few stories about closed cupboard doors. The main one for me is a short story called “The Cupboard”, a dingy place behind a dishwasher where a teenage girl relives a pivotal day in her life when she is forced to clean it out. Absolutely ANYTHING can be concealed or live in a cupboard or wardrobe. They are never just a domestic piece of carpentry or furniture. For some reason they take on elements of the things they contain, they develop personae, personality, a soul, and intent just by the things they contain … or release. What is in your wardrobe?

He steps in every morning to change out of himself and into his work uniform. A 3 piece grey suit (entirely impractical for the desert) constrains his movements and thoughts for 9.5 hours every day – or whenever his boss wants it to. Oh the relief he must feel when he peels it off each evening. The dread he must feel every morning.

A lion in Tsavo National Park answers nature’s call. Tsavo is of the famous “Man-eaters of Tsavo” book (Made into a 1996 film with Val Kilmer called “The Ghost and The Darkness”) about the building of the Uganda Railroad through Tsavo in south east Kenya in 1898. The two lions managed to pick off 140 workers by dragging them out of their tents at night and gobbling them up. One Hundred and Forty!!! The two were eventually shot and are currently on display in the Field Musuem of Natural History in Chicago. The more you know.
