The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire is a living tribute to the people of the last century and to reflect this over the past four years some 40,000 trees have been planted and monuments raised in memory of the armed forces, the Merchant Navy, the Police and Fire Service and the Civil Defence. Among the Veterans who have plots at the site are those linked to Dunkirk (the pictured helmet and rifle), Burma and Normandy Campaigns. The project also includes a Visitor Centre and the Millennium Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness which is the only one of its kind to be built to celebrate peace in the new millennium and reflect on previous conflict. The Chapel is the only place within the United Kingdom where the Act of Remembrance is observed on every day of the year. Visitors to the Chapel and surrounding areas are invited to stop in silence at 11am to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict.

Shimpū Tokkōtai (jap. 神風特攻隊) is the Japanese name for the Kamikaze special troops. Kamikaze (jap. 神風, literally: “God-wind”, “god speed”, “light wind”, “spirit-wind” or “divinity-wind”; common translation: “divine wind”) is a word of Japanese origin, which in English usually refers to the suicide attacks by military aviators from the Empire of Japan against Allied shipping, in the closing stages of the Pacific campaign of World War II, to destroy as many warships as possible.

This is my entry for the London Calling competition which everyone should get into. The main image is an early warning system used in London. A man in a gasmask with an alarm hooked up to loudspeaker attached to his bike would ride through the streets sounding the alarm. He also had a microphone inside the mask. / The background images are selected archive photos from the blitz. The tube map over the top is from 1938.

This is my tribute to Muntazer al-Zaidi. The legendary journalist who threw his shoe at George W Bush during his farewell visit to Iraq. Clearly it is based on Banksy’s “Flower Chucker” stencil which is based on a photo from the 1968 riots in Paris. I’ve tried to keep it faithful to both Banksy and Muntazer by illustrating his head as close as possible to the original press conference image, in the style of “Flower Thrower”. I also illustrated the shoe to fit his hand just nicely and added a bit of definition to the fingers. Love to know what you think. Good riddance George Dubbaya. Muntazer al-Zaid may be the thrower, but you certainly are the tosser. / / / / / / /

On May 3rd 1915 John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields, after witnessing the death of his friend, Lt. Alexis Helmer. Since then the Poppy has been the symbol for the lives lost during World War 1. On November 11th (UK) we commemorate the sacrifices made, and remember what they gave for us.

Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918) was a German fighter pilot known as the “Red Baron”. He was the most successful flying ace of the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) during World War I, being officially credited with 80 confirmed air combat victories. He flew this very destinctive red triplane and was feared by many allied pilots. No one could have dreamed we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us. At midnight on the twelfth of August, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across two hundred million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us, came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. As I watched, there was another jet of gas. It was another missile, starting on its way. And that’s how it was for the next ten nights. A flare, spurting out from Mars – bright green, drawing a green mist behind it – a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight. Ogilvy, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger. He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote, forbidding planet. ‘The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one,’ he said. ‘The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one – but still they come!’ Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought to be an ordinary falling star, but next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the Common, and Ogilvy came to examine what lay there: a cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot… and with faint sounds of movement coming from within. Suddenly the top began moving, rotating, unscrewing, and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside, trying to escape. he rushed to the cylinder, but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal. ‘The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one,’ he said. ‘The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one – but they still come!’ ‘Yes, the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one,’ he said. ‘The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one – but they still come!’ It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. In honour of the 11th day of the 11th month; the day that recalls the end of World War I, I fold 11 poppies from 15×15mm pieces of paper. The cross is also made from paper. Remembrance Day – also know as Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifice of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. Source: Wikipedia The poppy’s significance to Remembrance Day is a result of Canadian military physician John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields”. This poem has also been adapted as a song: In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row / That mark our place; and in the sky / The larks, still bravely singing, fly / Scarce heard ‘mid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago / We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow / Loved and were loved, and now we lie / In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe / To you from failing hands we throw / The torch; be yours to hold it high. / If ye break faith with us who die / We shall not sleep / Though poppies grow / In Flanders fields.
