  • A Chronicle of Boredom (Rant Aftermath)
    by AbyssalSoul

After all that ranting (which you can read here ) I was finally …

After all that ranting (which you can read here ) I was finally able to go to the customs and pick up the frame print. Now, what a lame thing I got the letter on saturday as that put me on anxious mood for two days and I couldn’t sleep pretty much today. Rest assured, I finally came back home with the framed print. Just I wish things could’ve been a bit easier. I’m not blaming bad luck or that crap, perhaps I have to blame myself and anxiety (but, come on, who the hell wouldn’t be anxious when you are expecting something? apathy is obviously not my style). So, today we had an unusual cold… but that’s how spring works. I decided to go early (around 11am, these guys open at 10am). After a boring 1-hour bus trip to the other side of the city, I finally reached my destination. Blam. First weird thing: the place seems kinda empty… if not… abandoned? What the???!!!! As I approach I discover the central was closed till 2pm because the personal was on strike. WHY IN HELL THEY DON’T F-—-- TELL THIS ANYWHERE????? The postal office has a damn website, they should use it (note: they don’t…) I wasn’t the only one pissed. So yeah, it was already 12pm, time for lunch so I decided to go back home and eat something. After ANOTHER hour, I finally got back home. I assure you I almost lose faith and stayed but I decided to return for the package. You only have 3-4 working days to pick it up the before paying some stupid and obscene “storage taxes” and whatnot. When it’s about paying, they open the doors quickly. When it comes to get stuff that it’s meant for YOU, they can gently leave you waiting for four hours. So yeah, this is what happened later. I left at 2pm, got there again at 3pm to find out there were 100 people before me and had to wait till 5pm to JUST deliver my letter and declare I was there to retire the framed print. Don’t worry, I had fun at least. People united in boredom! XD There was an old man mumbling the system has stayed the same (only with a couple of computers) since the ‘50s. A german guy who couldn’t believe he was there for a measly 300g letter, a funny asian couple who just wouldn’t stop cursing in (I think) korean and a taiwanese who truly showed me what patience is. Sadly, this is endemic to Argentina, probably our worst side. It’s like we got trapped in a wormhole we can’t get out from (or they won’t let us). It’s 2007 and we are forming a disordered line of 200 people just to declare and hand over a little piece of paper! I didn’t get to the best part: another 50 mins of waiting to be called by a customs officer, open the package, check if it was ok or it had drugs, a bomb, or something (you know, these aussies are bloody terrorists, mate!). Once that was done and I signed all the boring papers I was finally free to go back home. I left with the sun up there in the sky, I came back with the sun burying deep in the horizon. 6:10pm. So I kinda lost 6 hours in waitings/travelling. Funny note? I reviewed yesterday’s newspaper and the back note put in big letters how difficult is to make public stuff like getting your passport, document or PAYING A TICKET (yes, a freaking ticket/infraction for passing a semaphor and such)... sadly they forgot to add that it’s a pain in the ass to recieve a package from another country. I heard bad stuff about Australian Post but please don’t let it turn into a troglodite XIX century service for the love of god. Same with trains. I heard stuff like: “OMG PEOPLE TRAVEL ALL CRAMPED” and such. You think you saw it all? See “El Tren de los Cartoneros” and you will see what a destroyed train system is. This link might hurt some sensibilities but we are used to see this weird contrasts. For example, I read stuff about the australian aborigins, do people take them into account? I’m fearing they might suffer something similar… which is bad. :( - rant over - So, after all that lame complaint you think… how did I even get here? If you endured all my boring blabbering, here comes the nice part: RED BUBBLE ELVES YOU ROCK!!!!!! I cannot believe it! The framed print is freaking amazing, the resolution, the quality of the material (and how polished the wood-like thingie is!), and even how it survived all the journey back in time to this place!!!! Yeah, the bubblewrap resisted, everything was in order. My family just won’t stop staring in awe at the picture, like, “wow, aussie quality” (come on, laugh!) But yeah, we are more than happy with the results. And that is what matters! Despite all the crap, this alone is positive enough to outcome and totally destroy the crappy part. So, there you have it. The history of an odyssey and a lot of waiting, jejeje. AS Over and Out. Yeah, yeah, I will quit the ranting for now. I’m working on something I’ll upload soon.

I’m waiting for my new puppy to be born – and it is driving me INSANE. There are two possible colours in this litter and I only want one – so 50% chance there. I also want a boy, so 50% there too! All could go wrong and it could be females of the wrong colour! I’ve been waiting properly for three days now – I’ve watched the bitch sitting down a lot on webcam but still no whelping! Hurry up puppies!!!

... that this is the most favourited of all my work, at 32 favouritings and 890 views. It amazes me because: / - It took me about 40 minutes to do & / - She looks so annoyed & / - I don’t think it’s one of my better works by a long shot. Just goes to show, we have no idea what we are talking about when it comes to our own work! To think, I sold this on Ebay for $79 … well at least the buyer told me it was professionally framed and gifted to her sister and sits on the wall in her bedroom. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about, getting work out there rather than it piling up getting damaged in a store room. Just wanted to share.

  • Stuffed Hospital Emergency System

Why is our Hospital system seeming as bad as a 2nd world’s one? I have had my [and yours and the bloke down the road’s and the lady up the street’s] . fair share of dental pain, body injuries & all manner of ailments requiring hospital emergency trips, but I am not so sure that the local Chemist couldn’t help better & faster! Mick has a huge dental abscess that is really knocking him about – of course there are no dentists or doctors open and the hospital emergency waiting times is nearly a full day! …… It really can be up to 18 hours waiting time! …… and then there are no beds to put you in if you need one! I kid you not!! / 18 HOURS!!! What do you think is fair waiting time for EMERGENCY treatment? ...... I would say immediately for serious stuff & no more than an hour for whatever else if it is needing treatment – as opposed to a band-aid & Panadol and a smile as they send you home with a referral for your doctor or an appointment to see one of the clinic doctors within the next week! All through my life I have always carried a book or something in my bag – in case I had to wait for service! Waiting in the Centrelink line I have knitted a sleeve of a jumper! In the Dental Hospital waiting room(s) I have read an entire novel! [One chapter going in on the tram, a third of the book in the triage line and another third in the X-ray line and the last in the Dentist’s line! leaving nothing to read on the trip home!] A few years ago while waiting to find out if I had Lupus or not, I saw a man with a broken leg [even I could tell it was broken!] sitting on a stupidly unsupportive bench in a hospital corridor with his leg unsupported waiting to be seen! I had some stuff with me [I was expecting a long hospital stay] and so gave him the first-aid I could [stage 2 trained in scouting] to ease his pain [bag under his leg above his knee to take the weight off and clothing to support his heel – the break was in his shin bone] while waiting for the emergency doctor to help him. When it came to my turn I tried to tell the doctor to see to the broken leg but he wouldn’t take him out of sequence with me! The best they could do was get him a wheel chair and a pillow! / Where was the triage? Where was the sense of importance – sure I presented with a butterfly rash and had been told by 2 practice Doctors that I most likely could have Lupus but these emergency doctors [the first time I have ever insisted on a second opinion!!] decided I had bad sunburn and as such should be easy enough to treat in a room than a bloke obviously needing surgery! I pulled out all my photo ID to show I do not normally have a turned up nose or swollen eyebrows and I had NOT been in the sun! I even told them to ring my doctor but they wouldn’t. I walked out on that nonsense & walked home 15 kilometers!!! [You never know … I could still have it! lol] I also blame the TV shows that depict people on ambo trolleys rushed in on the run to the waiting arms of the caring eager emergency staff! No injury is too gory and no illness to extreme! These fantastic collection of staff [one shift’s worth] can deal with anything ASAP! – NOT in the real hospitals they don’t! But it is getting even worse! Just recently I have seen a man set up a camp bed in one emergency waiting room for his very ill teenage daughter! It took them 8 HOURS after that to be seen !!! / [I was a further 2 hours] But when the emergency patients are CAMPING in the hospital emergency triage waiting room ….. / ..... THERE IS A DEFINITE PROBLEM WITH OUR EMERGENCY HOSPITAL SYSTEM! What say you?

  • Doing A Shoot On A Budget - The Making Of 'I Wait'
    by Ross Spencer

I thought I’d share a little information about doing a shoot on a budget, seeing as I am doing it rather a lot and that I’ve had some suc…

I thought I’d share a little information about doing a shoot on a budget, seeing as I am doing it rather a lot and that I’ve had some success with the resultant photographs, just using what I could find around the house.. So, here’s the image I’m using as an example of my low cost creations: / This is one of my favorite images that I’ve created and part of that is due to the way that it was created. It was shot in one of the bedrooms of my home with no studio equipment.. Well, with the exception of a tripod… So, here’s my shopping list (including the actual photographic gear)... / Photographic Stuff Camera. (well, yes.. Obviously) In this case, my Canon EOS 400D with my Sigma DG 28-300mm lens. My tripod. Conin A, soft focus filter (A380) plus the associated lens adaptor ring and filter holder, of course. (If you don’t have filters, then this particular set up was about £20 I think) / The Other Equipment/Props One Model (In this case, my girlfriend, Little-Red, so it didn’t cost me anything.. Well, perhaps dinner tomorrow night…) The models clothes. (She comes equipped with these… Well, mostly..) One dining room chair.. (Already lying around the house just waiting to be used) One 10M length of red bondage rope (About £10 from ebay) A table reading lamp with adjustable neck (I discovered this particular one laying at the back of a long forgotten cupboard, looking rather disheveled.. It’s amazing what you can find if you go looking) 2 red supermarket carrier bags (Free from the supermarket, and I’ll explain what they are for in a minute…) 2 black sheets for a kingsize bed (£12 for the two). 1 roll of normal sticky tape (£1 from a cheap stationers) Gimp Software. (Free Open Source Software) Okey, so we’ve got all our stuff together and, other than the actual camera equipment, I actually spent a total of £23.. I’ve included the sheets in the cost because I bought them specifically for my photography.. If you already use black sheets to sleep on, then you’ve got an even cheaper project! So, to get the finished work that you see at the top, I shot this: The soft focus was gained from the filter on the camera and the red lighting was achieved from the small table reading lamp with the two red supermarket carrier bags taped over it. A word of warning with this! The bulb in the lamp gets hot! Do not leave it on for too long at any one time, and give it a few minutes to cool off!! Otherwise you risk melting the bags and starting a fire!! I then carried out all of the post processing in Gimp which is an entirely free package. (For a tutorial on using Gimp to selective colour, Go here) So, in total I spent £23 on props and equipment that I didn’t have lying around the house already (or had already purchased as part of my hobby.. My camera, for example). So, for anyone that’s looking to do some moody and erotic based work but thinks they need special stuff.. Nope, you don’t.. Just take a look around and see what you can use.. :) Edit / Kriss (CLiPiCs) very kindly bmailed me with some other ‘Shoot it on the cheap’ Journal posts that he wrote and they are brilliant! So if you found this useful, go and have a read of them! / Photography on the Cheap! / Photography on the Cheap Part Two / Studio Speed Test
