  Thanks to my friend Robert for allowing me to do a photoshoot on his car. Variable Valve Timing, the revolutionary technology introduced to Japanese cars by giant Honda. Everyone else seems to have caught on by this stage. A revolutionary idea, allowing better emissions and fuel consumption, as well as greater top end power when the system is tuned to suit.

  Honda fans eat your heart out! VTEC aka Variable Timing Electronic Control is a system developed by Honda to increase the volumetric efficiency of a four-stroke engine. When a predetermined RPM is reached, a solenoid is actuated which allows oil pressure to lock pins which binds the high RPM cam follower to the low rpm ones. The high-lift profile enables the valves to opens further and for a longer time, thus increase the volumetric efficiency of the engine.

  MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control) Is the brand name of a variable valve timing engine technology developed by Mitsubishi Motors. MIVEC, as with other similar systems, varies the timing, lift and duration of the valves by using two different camshaft profiles. At low speeds, a mild (low-lift) cam lobe provides stable idle, lower emissions and increased torque at lower speeds, while above a fixed engine speed a second set of cam lobes are activated, providing higher lift and duration; therefore a greater quantity of air into the combustion chamber which increases the power and torque output over a broad engine speed range.
