  • This is the actual color of Crater Lake in Oregon. It is the deepest lake in the world, and because it has minimal animal or plant life in the lake, it is a pristine blue color. The lake was formed from the blast of a volcano (Wizard Island is the remnant). The only boats allowed are the tour boats, which are few and far between.

  • I took this when I went trekking for gorillas in the volcanos of Rwanda. On the border of D.R. Congo & Uganda. These gorillas were around 7 metres from us – and would have been closer if we hadn’t stepped back (you’re only allowed to be as close as 7 metres). We just hung around and watched the family for an hour. It was pretty cool. My profile /       /       /

  • To spend an hour with Mountain Gorillas is one of the best wildlife experiences you can ever hope for. They captivate you with their eyes and you become lost in the moment. Your time with them goes so fast you are left just wanting more… / / (Virunga Volcanoes – Rwanda) / >< / / / / / / /

  • The price of the real beauty can be too high…sometimes

  • Puu Mahana Beach (Green Sand beach) is the spectacular erosion product of a volcanic cinder cone near South Point on the Big Island of Hawaii. It can be reached by a 1-hour hike through beautiful scenics (take plenty of water!). The unusual tone of the green sand is due to the large proportion of semi-precious stone olivine polished crystals, which are left behind during the breakdown of lava. Crystals of olivine form in abundance during the cooling of hot lava. Because they are much harder than the lava matrix, they tend to accumulate near areas of lava erosion.

Your time with them goes so fast you are left just wanting more… / This large Silverback was only a few meters away from us! / / Unfortunately, Mountain Gorilla numbers are small, with only approximately 700 left in the wild. The primary threat comes from forest clearance and degradation, as the region’s growing human population struggles to eke out a living. I am hopeful ways can be found to control these problems before it is too late. / / (Virunga volcanoes – Rwanda) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

But East Maui volcano has witnessed at least ten eruptions in the past 1,000 years. It is the giant volcano that peaks out at over 10,000 feet and looms over Maui. Haleakala last erupted in the 1790s. It is 33 miles wide and 24 miles long, and the main crater is 7.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. / Photo taken at sunrise.
