This is the most popular view of the Tengger Caldera in East Java. A caldera is a collapse crater from a massive volcanic eruption which accurs after the underlying magma chamber has cooled and collapsed leaving a huge crater, in this case about 30 Km across. You can see the crater rim crearly outlined on the left. The small smoking cone in the middle distance is Mt Bromo, an active volcano. The large smoking mountain in the distance is Mt Semeru, a 3,700m monster that erupts every 10-20 minutes. It is a tough climb, but woth the effort as you then get to see an active volcano from very close range. It’s not as dangerous as it sounds because the frequent eruptions do relieve the pressure, and large eruptions tend to occur after a period of low activity (but nothing about a volcano is entirely predictable). This is well worth a vist if you ever get the chance.
Young mountain gorilla comtemplates life, Virunga Volcano, Rwanda There are only 380 gorillas left in Rwanda and about 700 left on the planet. Unfortunately, even today there is still demand for baby gorillas from private zoos – buyers that are willing to acquire baby gorillas by any means necessary, including illegal poaching. The terrible reality is that many mountain gorillas are killed in the process of poaching as the adults strive to protect the baby. This is where Dian Fossey began her work. Chile’s Chaiten volcano has erupted, spewing lava and blasting ash more than 12 miles into the sky – and prompting officials to order a total evacuation of the surrounding area. Let us remember everyone in our thoughts today.

While flying into St. Lucia I was able to capture the beatiful Piton Mountains. And no, I did not attempt to climb them. The St. Lucian people swear it only takes two hours and that both peaks are flat on top – I don’t believe either statement. Located near Soufriere, these primeval twin peaks, topping 2,000 feet, are St. Lucia’s most famous landmark. Only the most daring climbers have ventured an ascent to their summits, but they can be seen in all their glory from Mt. Gimie or from the decks of a boat offshore. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-
Pele is the “Fire Goddess” of the Hawaiian Islands. She has moved from island to island, across the chain, breathing fire along her path. Today Pele resides on the Big Island of Hawaii, where she is active and on display for anyone who dares come close enough. This image is of Haleakala Crater, on Maui. Pele last lives here 230 years ago, but may return. As I hiked alone through this 100 square mile volcanic crater, I could sense Pele’s presence in the hot dry air. Pele is powerful, but not to be feared. If you show respect to the Maddam Pele, she will control her temper and show mercy. You must treat lightly in such sacred places.

... well a lot of people would say this place is more like Mars (how they know, I’m not sure). Nevertheless, on a cold frozen day here in Merrie Olde England I enjoy looking at one of my favourite places which is warm and dry and in Chile. This is the Valley of the Dinosaurs in the Atacama Desert. The driest place on earth – that suits me perfectly – someone pass me a cider…...... ;o)

WILD AND FREE / / To spend an hour with Mountain Gorillas is one of the best wildlife experiences you can ever hope for. They captivate you with their eyes and you become lost in the moment. Your time with them goes so fast you are left just wanting more… / / / Unfortunately, Mountain Gorilla numbers are small, with only approximately 700 left in the wild. The primary threat comes from forest clearance and degradation, as the region’s growing human population struggles to eke out a living. I am hopeful ways can be found to control these problems before it is too late. / / (Virunga volcanoes – Rwanda) / /

Haleakala Crater in Maui, Hawaii is actually an extinct volcano resembling in many ways the surface of the moon. As a matter of fact, US astronauts have actually done training here. The long tedious ride to the top ascends from sea level to over 10,000 feet in elevation, passing through several climate zones and varied scenery and it is very difficult to actually believe that you are in Hawaii. The reward is when you reach the crater itself, located in Haleakala National Park is well worth it and is as surreal as any place on earth. Perfectly clear days are far and uncommon and I was extatic when I got here to find that it was crystal clear. I had visited on previous occasions when it was rainy and foggy with zero visability much to my dismay. To sum it up, this wonder is a true sight to behold and one of my favorite places in the world to shoot. Hiking through the crater itself, which i have done is a one of a kind experience. I hope you enjoy this image as much as I do. All content & images © Stephen Vecchiotti. You may not use any images in any way without written consent from artist. All Rights Reserved.

Recognise the objects in this photograph? Luminous jelly? Mis-shapen test tubes? Mutant egg yolks? BevanImage was spot-on, first guess. Yes, if you knew they were lava lamps, give yourself a pat on the back. I shot this in the souvenir shop at Scienceworks earlier today. The lady behind the counter readily gave me permission to take a shot of them as the lamps sat on a shelf. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my work in any way. About This Painting / I live underneath this rock – or more accurately, nearly underneath it. There is a small gut between my place and the rock, so if it ever decided to fall down, I am not in the immediate line of fire. I wouldn’t like my chances if it ever decided to erupt again, though. The rock is called Orotere which means Flying Pigeon. There’s one in the painting – the Kereru or native pigeon of New Zealand. See my other painting of the Kereru . Acrylic on canvas board.
