During a relatively peaceful 2002 protest against the World Bank in Washington, D.C., anti-war demonstrators began to change the situational climate of the march. Tensions between protesters and police, who were expecting a violent demonstration, began to rise. Police began to arrest everyone that they managed to surround inside Pershing Park, guilty, as well as innocent bystanders alike. In relative anticipation of the police’s reaction, this young man wrote the telephone numbers of civil defense lawyers on his arms before the demonstrations even began.

This began to look to me like compartments of / hell, with a lot of molten flowing stuff going on. / I thought what a bad experience it would be to / wake up there. / / The face is from a photo I took, fifteen years ago at an office picnic, of one of the sculptures at Haines Point in Washington, DC, representing a giant man rising from beneath the ground; his face, an arm, a foot and, I believe, a knee are all of him that is seen above ground. A good friend and an actress at the time Nuala was looking for a set of photos to use for her portfolio. I thought that she could look quite hard and hence play more quirky parts which she succesfully did including the mother of a braineater. The dark road behind her and her stern appearance as well as her day a day dress made this image work. Taken in 1998 or thereabouts in St. Annes Park Dublin.
