A forgotten complimentary bottle my husband Dave (technical director who worked on the Moet & Chandon Vintage Launch at the Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal) will finally be drunk in celebration next week for our 2 year wedding anniversary! I retouched approx fifty 6×3mtre shots which were projected on the night over a few days then not surprisingly -went on to shoot the launch with a headcold to boot. This time last year we were backpacking across Europe/U.K & to celebrate our first year hitched we stayed in a great mod minimilist yet decadent (stupidly expensive) hotel in Milan, Italy. Can’t beat that…but a vintage bottle of Moet is a good start.

Well, the Yashica didn’t work out, so I decided to wind the clock back another few decades It’s an English box camera from the 1940s. A Houghton Ensign Ful-View. I am going to make a neutral filter for it tomorrow so that it doesn’t wash out every darn photo with modern film, then it’s ready to go. The wonderful Jess and I will have our sip ‘n snap adventure soon, and all the results (for good an bad) will be inflicted on everyone through my journal Isn’t it awesome? It just screams use me!

Hello to the redbubble community, wherever you are! I’ve only been ‘addicted’ to this new vice a little over a week – and already I’ve had to amend my computer directory structure to keep track of which images have been uploaded where. My flickr account images measure 1500×1000, whereas I realise that redbubble images need to stay at FULL size – which in my case measure 3888×2952. Fortunately I’d taken Easter on Kangaroo Island (a deceptively large island off the South West side of the Eyre Peninsula, across from Adelaide) where I’d shot an incredible amount of photographs (estimated at 2,500 based on “continuous count” function of Canon EOS 400D) These would have to be my favourite three images from my Easter Collection … which totals over 100 images uploaded! , , Feel free to peruse, enjoy AND PURCHASE my photographic art. I have a lot of work to go through – and upload. Thank the internet for unlimited broadband!

Thanks to the comments of a knowledgeable viewer, finally these photographs are correctly named! / This is the very rare Austin A70 Hampshire Ute (or PickUp), albeit a little worse for wear and completely beyond restoration. But I like it that way. This once beautiful car will hopefully rust all the way back into the ground from whence its metal and leather parts originated. (Though I plan to obtain a few parts from it next time we visit!) For now, I encourage someone to purchase these three framed images for the pleasure of seeing a historic piece of Australian history. ( Viewed here are Large Flat Frames, Walnut Frame, Off-white Matte. ) / OR / Alternatively, you can purchase them as one triptych wherein a cropped version of each of the previous images resides. ( Viewed here are Large Flat Frames, Mocha Frame, Matte to match dividing colour. ) ON WHITE / ON BLACK /

Viva revolucion! i’d join that! i’m totally revolting at the moment. have had a cold and rested all last week (that means no training of any sort just working all day) and by saturday was ready to leap tall buildings. was going to do a x-coutnry race up in the blue mountains but it got cancelled because of inclement weather, people who do that sort of race don’t care about falling trees and washed away tracks but the race organisers do…and National Parks people do as they worry about 100’s of runners wrecking the trails. Anyhow, went running down Royal National Park instead with some friends, i was physically tired and heart rate racing because of cold….SO, next day was WAY worse and all this week felt yik. / Anyhow, painting sunny tropical Cuba and listening to music created in this creative hotspot makes me wanna go there especially as another white-out of rain rolls overhead and dumps over the harbour. I’m really enjoying painting these beautiful old cars and decaying colourful walls with Cuban graffitti…...I’ve mixed lots of plaster in and it just gets such a great texture. My fave thing at the moment. I’m going to try to layer resin on top tonight and see what happens. My husband is packing them up to send up to a gallery on the Gold Coast. I’ve done 3/6. The 6th one will bring me to 500 paintings. A milestone of sorts I guess. That’s 500 big paintings since i began selling when i was about 24yrs old. Designs, Ceramics and everything else go filed into all sorts of separate folders. / I’ve just been sent samples of the Apres Velo cycle range so tonight will open and go thru them..this is Winter 08, i think! I’ve just sketched up Winter 09….you have to work so far ahead.

New Group: Selective Colring

Hello everybody, I would like to introduce the new group: Selective coloring. http://www.redbubble.com/people/cheerishables/art/81401-5-party-girl Color is a very impactful and potent factor in photography when it comes to grabbing attention or even evoking emotion. When the color is an accent, it is even more powerful, drawing your eye to key elements within your image. Often times, images take on a vintage style, but the color accents add even more interest than complete black and white, sepia toned images. I would like to kindly invite those of you who use and enjoy selective coloring in your own photographs. If you would like to also share techniques and ideas, that would be wonderful to. You can sign up and view the complete description and guidelines here: http://www.redbubble.com/groups/selective-coloring.

One of my favourite things to keep out of and at the moment I’m not doing it very well at the moment. Instead I’m prowling around the ‘net wondering if “something art deco” is enough of an instruction to give to my cover designer for the next MMP short story release… / / art deco ... / art deco advertising ... / art deco perfume ad .... Oh! Wonder if there’s anything on that old perfume bottle I have still in it’s original packaging… It’s from 1935, a novelty perfume by Saville, and the above example sold at auction in 2003 for $264 (USD?). Mine’s a slightly different version – no egg – and I just like it because it’s cool. And because I like to include scent in all my stories, whether it’s something natural or designed to give pleasure … like a little bottle of Mischief

Hello Everyone..!! I’m Paul..!! I was born 43 Years ago, here in Knoxville Iowa.. and from a very young age, I’ve been interested in art and drawing.. I began with designs and things.. and started drawing vehicles in the late 80’s.. using magic markers and posterboard.. Later I graduated to colored pencils.. I drew several old cars and trucks, and began practicing different techniques.. and continued drawing into the late 90’s… Then I started getting into photography… Now I hit the car shows every chance I get, and enjoy travelling the countryside, looking for interesting things to capture..

I did this article a while back when I created my design of the Green Fairy (or Absinthe). It is perhaps a bit long for here, but I hope you enjoy it. I have been enjoying the intriguing history of this little fairy and she has inspired me to create my own version of her. She was the muse said to represent the potent liquor known as Absinthe. A naughty and mischievous lady, but very seductive. She is also referred to as La Fee Verte or Green Fairy. She was part of La Belle Époque, or “beautiful era”. A period in France’s history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. It was a golden time of beauty, innovation, and peace between France and its European neighbors. A time of cabaret, and cancan, and art flourished with Impressionism and Art Nouveau. She inspired famous artists and writers of that time, and was a favorite of the bohemian culture. Some of the more famous imbibers she inspired were… Verlaine, Rimbaud, Poe, Wilde, Mary Shelly, Hemingway, Somerset Maugham and Jack London. Absinthe often has a dazzling green color (depending on the brand). The color usually came from the chlorophyll content of the herbs used in the distillation process. The main ingredient being Wormwood. But it not only inspired, it also drove some mad. It is said to be a contributing factor when Van Gogh cut off part of his ear. Below a quote from Wilde. Oscar Wilde / “After the first glass you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing in the world.” Absinthe also enjoyed great popularity in New Orleans at that time but was banned in the U.S. around 1912. One place of great renown was “The Old Absinthe House” in the heart of the French Quarter, at the corner of Bourbon Street and Bienville. Many celebrities passed through their doors as well … including P.T. Barnum, Mark Twain, Jenny Lind, Enrico Caruso, General Robert E Lee, Franklin Roosevelt, Liza Minelli and Frank Sinatra. / / This is just a taste of the rich history that follows the Green Fairy. There is so much more and only a search away if you would like to delve deeper. I hope you enjoy my illustration of this fascinating Green Fairy and her intoxicating past. I offer my rendition of her here on T-shirts, wall art and cards.

Yep on a lighter note this groovy little number came to me while I was watching Jack Nicholson losing it for the umpteenth time in the Shining. Started making me think, that whole Charleston vibe, the Flappers and such, they could have done with a few hip hop beats. Hence the gramophone decks and top hat ‘n’ tails. Anyway no deep message, just having a laugh with this one ;)

Day at the junkyard

Today was an awesome day!!! Sorry I just had to say ‘awesome.’ This was one of those days when ‘awesome’ is required! / It has been so long since I have picked up the camera and shot something other than my children. I love my kids, but, sorry guys, “Car Nut” junk yard, my subject for this day, was eye candy. Mommy needed to lose herself in something. Spring finally arrived. It had been a long, long winter. The lot I went to houses around 200 vintage cars. All around me there were Chevs, Fords, Plymouths, a bus from the 50’s, a taxi from the 50’s that still had the drivers cap inside. There was a beautiful black and red Fury that the owner drives. His younger brother owns the red Viscount that I had the opportunity to photograph. Gorgeous cars! You can really see the love that went into them. / As soon as I pulled up I could feel the excitement build. I could barely contain myself from jumping out right away and getting lost in the junkyard. Relax, Breathe. (I love, LOVE old cars.) / Before taking shots the owner showed us around. (My oldest daughter and her friend tagged along with their cameras.) He has a shed behind the house where he has spent many long winter hours constructing a miniature town with a train the goes around town. Beautiful sight!! The detail he put into was incredible. He had a couple of accidents in town, a police car ready to give a speeding ticket, passengers waiting at the rail station to board, even a drive-in. / On the walls he had vintage memorabilia. Pictures from way back when, license plates from the 60’s, articles from newspapers, hubcaps from different models of cars. On the bottom of his miniature town lay headlights and taillights from various years and cars. I was overwhelmed with all the visual stimulation. At times I wondered if I had enough memory on me, because I knew I wanted to get some shots of the collections in his shed. / It was incredible to see all of this. I felt very honoured to be allowed to photograph and have his wife and him share stories of their lives. He also showed us the tin train he won in a coloring contest when he was eight years old. It was so much to take in, I knew that I would have to return to the junkyard and go beyond the cars. There’s so much more to see there than cars. / I really enjoyed hearing his stories of when he was a boy growing up in the house that stands in the yard. (He lives there still.) The kids would play hide and seek in the hallways it would be so dark that someone could walk right past you and you would not know it. The smile on his face as he told his stories was beautiful. I truly felt privileged that he shared his wonderful stories with us. / I finally unloaded the camera gear from my car and was reassured to see that I brought my tripod. Note to self: Tripod is good, use the tripod. Great for pans and HDR photography. But the excitement of the day clouded my judgement and I forgot to use it! Well, I don’t know if it was forgetfulness so much as that I was too busy to spare a moment for fear I might miss something. Off I went clicking away. All you could hear was the birds and my camera that morning. At different times I was sitting on the ground, lying on my back, climbing. I was gone. I think, no I know, I embarrassed my daughter. / You should have seen the smile on my face. In my mind I was jumping up and down. What’s the expression—“giddy like a school girl?” There you go. That was me! I swear I saw the expression on my daughter’s face that said, “Mom get a life.” The hamster in me was running that wheel. I was busy planning each shot. Honestly, my neck is sore, I think I had whiplash from taking into much. Where do I look now? Sometimes my daughter and her friend egged me on: “Mom look at this. Paola you gotta see this.” / What I really enjoyed about today, aside from the stories, was just looking at the cars and seeing their faces and expressions. I know it may sound silly, but if you look deep enough the cars from yesteryear have so much character and the stories they could tell you. In fact the owner told me “Some of these cars would rat out teenagers.” I really wanted to be able to capture the individual character of each car, to try to get the viewer to wonder where that car had been, what it had heard over the years, and how it ended up at the yard. / I got over 700 shots (and would have taken more if I had more memory.) I took my time. I could not wait to get home and work on them. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them. I even got a chance to put my lens baby to work. I am really happy with the results and I plan on going out there a couple more times. I would love to get more information on the cars and listen to some more stories.
