My family and I have watched the unfolding events in Victoria this weekend and we have, all four of us, shed tears at the total and utter devastation our fellow countrymen and women have had to endure, and will continue to endure for a long time to come. For my global friends who may not be aware of the terrible bushfires that have wiped out whole communities and caused loss of lives and property on an massive scale you can read about it here One thing that has stood out for me has been the overwhelming sense of community support and courage shown by all those who have lost so much. Here, in our Redbubble community, people are also pulling together to do what they can to help out the victims of this tragedy, and to see that happening fills me with such a sense of pride in our community. For my part I will be offering all artist profits on any sales made in my portfolio this month to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal Redbubble has generously offered to match this donation dollar for dollar. If you would like to do the same all you need to do is email accounts@redbubble.com at the end of the month (27th, 28th of February) and indicate that you would like your artist profits donated to the appeal I’m also planning on going on a spending spree myself, and will be purchasing works from the generous artists who are contributing to and supporting this cause. X♥X ☼ This FIRESTORM was STUNNING in its FEROCIOUSNESS!!! - It seemed to sweep through towns as if they were gunpowder on a sparkler! / To see the flames literally racing faster than a car! We have lost people who tried to leave … but alas too late – families caught in their car as the flames engulfed it! Houses where the fire hit the back yard and before the occupants could run out the front door to the street the flames had engulfed their house! Others made it to the road with nowhere else to go & watched the fires devour all the neighbours homes…. / the horror .... the horror …. I have family & friends in the lines of fire: / My brother was up Healesville helping his mates – they’re fine / My sister’s in-laws were the only house saved on one road in Chum Creek / I have family in Buln Buln possibly in the path of the Bunyip Fire / I have friends in Beechworth fighting the Mt Stanley Fire on their back boundary fence But my kids heard about the complete raising of Marysville & burst into tears! / We had been there a month ago and stopped for lunch there to then go through the Gallery & Statue Gardens. It brought home to them just how devastating these fires can be they didn’t want to think that that place may not have survived – all that art! ... all the history …. / (& I see the project I am still trying to complete – a writing of our trip through there & the sights you could see – sights destroyed now, & I cry!) ☼ Ironically these fires have held up Mick’s acceptance into a brigade so here he is sitting on his hands unable to go fight like he’s been trained to because of bureaucracy – He at least can get into the official CFA site & see where the teams are deployed & what they are fighting. Sadly he also knows of the full devastation & the seemingly hopelessness & incapability of saving anything due to the speed of the fires & the lack of equipment & trained men! He could have been sent anywhere & with men he didn’t know – but as is the case with any trauma they would band together. He has his eye on the fires in Horsham & Terang too where he has friends. ☼ BUT WE KNEW IT WAS COMING! / We have watched our country drying out for years! We have seen the vegetation litter piling up a foot thick in the bush! We have seen the trees drying out & cracking !! We have had no decent rain for 15 years!! – our whole state is tinder dry !! Even the trees in suburbia are baked dry from the heatwave! / The Govt knew we were going to have HUGE fires when the heatwave before the thunder cool change hit! / The weathermen knew Saturday was going to be perfect for a huge firestorm High winds, High temperatures after a week of high 40s every day = the worst heatwave on record! / The only thing we had prepared was they sent Elvis down! But Elvis is now heading back to NSW as they face fires too! Now perhaps the Govt will take our need for better equipment & more servicemen – perhaps offer payment to the trained volunteers for all their hours and hours of time & effort & especially for risking their lives for others and there are plenty of guys saving other people’s houses while their own house burns & their family are left at risk! The horrendous part is ...... ☼ MOST OF THESE FIRES WERE DELIBERATELY STARTED !!!! ☼ / & sadly most likely by bored inexperienced CFA members looking for a thrill! ☼ WE NEED to DETER unnecessary fires!! ☼ ☼ the penalties for arson should be the same as MURDER!! ☼ / They should face charges for murdering each person the fire kills & attempted murder for any injured! If no one had died then manslaughter or attempted murder/manslaughter! ☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼♣☼♠☼ / ♣ / ☼ But what can I do? Along with many other Redbubblers I am donating profits from any sales of my work on RB to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal till April 1st to support those who have suffered loss in the Victorian fires here in Australia. If you have ever thought you’d like one of my images for your wall, as a card, or to use as a gift, now is the time – the proceeds could not go to a better cause. I will document any sales in a journal entry in April, and direct monies to The Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. Whole families have lost their lives – whole towns have been burned out. It really puts things into perspective and gives us a huge reality check. Please pray for those dealing with the aftermath.

Hello one and all. Victoria (one of australia’s states) has had a terrible fire rage through in the last few days, and has had terrible consequences with so far 108 confirmed dead. Anne Van Alkemade has set up a paypal bushfire appeal which you can learn more about HERE this is truly a devastating fire, probably the worst in Australian history – certainly worse than the Ash Wednesday fire in 1983. Australians are known for their genoristy and charity- we as a nation had given so much to the tsunami appeal, the nonsense in burma, even with hurrican katrina – in this time of trouble, it would be nice to see some of that charitable feeling return back this way. I had been chatting with Christopher Ewing when the fires started in Victoria. I was touched by his concern for the people and wildlife that are suffering from this tragedy. After a journal announcing that something had to be done to help the animals, Chris researched some worthy organisation and decided to do something about it. To help us here in Australia, he started an account Wildlife-Appeal and with the help of a handful of us, we are uploading images to this account. Profits from all sales will go to Wildlife Rescue and Protection Inc(WRAP) at the end of each month. These funds will also assist Ballarat & District Greendale Animal Rescue (BADGAR, a WRAP affiliated volunteer organisation). If you can help in anyway, either with an image, pledge or a purhcase, why not drop in to the Wildlife-Appeal and see the amazing work that has been donated to this wonderful cause. As you have already seen on the television and in the newspapers, the devastating bushfires that raged through Victoria….Myself and 24 firefighters 5 tankers and support crew from NSW Fire Brigades were the first on scene from interstate. We arrived at Kilmore on Sunday 8th February. / The CFA command then sent us to Yea to help the fight the fires in that area, as Kilmore was no longer under threat and the highway was re-opened. / When we got to Yea the CFA was very pleased to see us and we were sent to Glenburn. / When we arrived there the local CFA Captain said ”thank god you are here”. / We were immediately put to work protecting homes in the area. / One house was under direct threat from a house nearby that was burning. We managed to save this house and about 5 others. / On our return to Yea we walked over to the local showground’s to be fed. This had been turned into a tent city for all the homeless and the Red Cross had set up in the building and were serving food and had a collection of clothes for the homeless. / As we walked into the building we received a huge cheer from all locals that were homeless. We did appreciate it. But I felt a bit embarrassed because the local CFA members that were first on scene deserved a lot more than us. / I can only image what the local firefighters were confronted with, they did a tremendous job with the resources at their disposal. / A young girl that had lost everything including her mother, thank god she still had her Dad and brother, befriended one of our female firefighters. We decided to make a bit of a fuss and gave a NSW Fire Brigades baseball cap and jacket and also gave her a ride in the fire truck. / The crew from the NSW fire brigades had a whip around our firefighters and collected over $700.00 for the bush fire appeal.

Volunteer collects big time By Darren Stones NOVEMBER 11 is Remembrance Day, and each year the Victorian Branch of the Returned & Services League of Australia conducts its annual Red Poppy Appeal. Collecting for a cause: R.S.L. volunteer Bronwyn Galofaro rattling the tin. Picture: Darren Stones Voluntary helper, Bronwyn Galofaro has single-handedly raised AU$588.65 in donations from the public due to selling red poppies outside the Safeway supermarket in Hadfield, Victoria, Australia. In combining her employment as a carer with Migrant Resources in Preston, Bronwyn is a respected member of the Pascoe Vale R.S.L. Ladies Auxiliary and assists in co-ordinating bingo at the Pascoe Vale R.S.L. Sub-Branch in Pascoe Vale each Wednesday and Saturday. Public donations to the Red Poppy Appeal continue to provide welfare support for Ex-Service Men and Women, and their dependants who are in need. Money raised from the appeal assists the R.S.L. in relieving hardship of Ex-Service Men and Women, and their families through a wide range of activities including; Food vouchers Hospital and home visits Household utilities accounts Wheelchairs Walking frames Scooters Providing transport Pension and entitlement advice Home maintenance Aged care advice and facilitation Lest we forget.
