Grim Reaper – noun / the personification of death. [Origin: 1925–30] Old Slavic tribes viewed Death as a woman in white clothes, with a never-fading green sprout in her hand. The touch of the sprout would put a human to an everlasting sleep. This image survived Christianization well into the Middle Ages, only being replaced by the more traditional European image of a walking skeleton as late as in the 15th century. Death as a sentient entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of recorded history. In Western cultures, death is usually given the name, the “Grim Reaper”, and shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe, and wearing a midnight black gown, robe or cloak with a hood, or sometimes, a white burial shroud. Usually when portrayed in the black-hooded gown, only his eyes can be seen.

I wanted to do an image that symbolizes the Victorian bushfires that started on Saturday the 7th of February 2009, but I didn’t want this image to be sad (although we all know how devastating it has been), I wanted this image to be about the loss, the lives saved, how Australians came together and the growth to come. The Bird symbolizes all the lives that were saved, but this bird has no nest, so it also symbolizes all the homes that were lost and the nothingness some of these people now feel. The Birds claw clinging onto the tree branch is there to symbolize the fire fighters thoughts of hanging in there, and putting all these fires out. The Heart is there to symbolize all the heart ache and love, which us Australians have felt and will never forget. The Flower is there to symbolize all the help, support, donations and everything that us Australians have given to those affected, just to let them know that they have got support, and us Aussies are all here to help. The Music symbols are there to symbolize (all the lives lost) all the spirits flying up into the sky. The Leafs symbolize the growth to come, with rebuilding these affected communities. And I did not want an actual image of a fire in my design, so the swirls of the bird’s tail are there to symbolize the raging fire that affected so many. Any Money made from these images and designs I will be donating to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

The Queen of Hearts. This is for the entry in the Victoriandustrial challenge “Your Fellow Bubbler”...we had to draw a fellow group member. I chose Vicki Yeager When I was sketching out her portrait I had no idea what I wanted to do with it…to Victoriandustrialize, or vickydust her. But I was looking through some tattoo reference photos and saw the roses and thorns…and it came to me. Paint the roses red…the Queen of Hearts. Then I went to Vicki’s profile and read her blurb and saw unicorn. Drew that up and made it a bit like a cameo. I am very very happy with how this came out. 9×12 / Ink.
