A huge metal vice sits rusting on one of the work benches at this abandoned oil rig plant. Hopefully the cupboards and benches were kept in better repair when this place was open.

Located near Portesham village in Dorset, England, on the highest point of the Blackdown area is Hardy’s Monument. There are excellent views of the Dorset coast from this location. / This is not a memorial to the poet Thomas Hardy – it is to Vice Admiral, Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769 – 1839). Hardy lived in the nearby village of Portesham. During the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Hardy served as Lord Nelson’s flag captain. / The monument is 72 feet high.

I photographed my very first eagles on this New Year’s Day 2009; this one was in Amelia, Louisiana, in St. Mary’s Parish. I thought the quote by Benjamin Franklin was an appropriate one to sum up my adventures this day and my hopes for the new year. Happy New Year to all!

Vice Roys are different from the monarch. The distinguishing mark is a black line through the bottom part of their wings, where as the monarch doesn’t have that. This Vice Roy has decided to stop here in Oklahoma (my father in laws backyard) as it migrates for the winter. Settings: ISO400 1/200 f9 / Lens: AF-75-300mm 1:4-5.6 TELE-MACRO 1:3.9 Taken in my father in laws backyard which is actually a stopping area for birds and butterflies when they are migrating. Pretty cool actually .
