  • This Northern Cardinal male posed regally on a branch just long enough for me to capture this shot. A beautiful songbird, the cardinal is non-migratory and graces my garden year round.

  • The male Northern Cardinal lit for a few moments on this branch and gave me just enough time to take its picture. The sight of bright red feathers is a delight to me any day. The cardnal’s song is very uplifting—Cheer, cheer, pretty, pretty, pretty, cheer! Brings a smile to the face!

  • The time of day, the season of the year, the prevailing weather conditions all affect the existing light when I photograph birds in my yard. On this particular occasion, there was a golden glow which I really liked as the backdrop for this brilliant male cardinal so handsome in his suit of vermilion feathers.

  • Fushimi Inari is a remarkable shinto shrine near Kyoto, characterized by its hundreds of gates (torii) snaking up the hills. It is located on a beautiful forested mountain, and makes for a great hike. There is a mystical feeling to this site.

  • This male Northern Cardinal is nothing short of a pretty boy perched so strikingly in the elm tree with the February sky as his backdrop.

  • This strikingly attractive Northern Cardinal found a hideout in Mama’s rosebush, but I was able to spot him and snap his photo. Isn’t he a beauty?

  • This Northern Cardinal was playing peek-a-boo in the rose bushes at Mama’s house. He sits on the thorny branches between trips to the feeders Mama and Daddy keep well-stocked with black oil sunflower seeds. Spring is a glorious time with lots of brightly colored birds busy about the business of being fruitful and multiplying!

  • Featured in “National Parks of the World” – August 2009. Featured on a “National Parks” theme Homepage – 2008. Beams of light from the rising sun (behind the camera location) appear through a cleft in 3000 foot high cliffs of vermilion-colored sandstone. • A common breeder in Southern Arizona, the Vermilion is among the most spectacular of North American Fycatchers, in coloration and courtship display.

  • These marshy lakes in Banff National Park offer a postcard view of Mt. Rundle. The clouds were excellent this day (it was snowing up the valley) and the colours were evenly saturated with the sunlight being filtered through clouds. I was trying to photograph a very uncooperative heron, but I think i can settle for this one instead!

  • Duck’s wake captured in shining sunset at Bowman Springs Park, Lake Arlington, Texas.

  • This marker is in Ellsworth Park in Danville, Illinois. Most people have heard of the Trail of Tears but few have heard of the Trail of Death. I was born and raised in Indiana and don’t recall anything about it in our history books, though it’s a big part of Indiana history, as the tribe was originally uprooted from an Indiana town and made to travel on foot across three States in winter. An ugly part, though, so perhaps that’s why it was downplayed? I don’t know. Interestingly, our recent paranormal investigations are what led me to study the history of the Potawatomi Nation and uncover a lot of things many people weren’t aware of. The research continues…

  • *I shoot the strangest things when I’m bored… Tim was off chasing geese to photograph a few days ago, and I was sitting by the pond. As you can see, it’s a writer’s imagination gone amok yet again, as this is really only bubbles floating by on a stick and not the beginning of life as we know it. lol “I’ve often stood silent at a party for hours listening to my movie idols turn into dull and little people.” / ~Marilyn Monroe

  • I named this flamboyant male Northern cardinal Mr. Vermilion because vermilion is a vivid shade of scarlet with an orange tinge to it. The cardinals are really feisty this time of year; the males are always scuffling and scrapping, beating each other with their wings and performing aerial displays of aggression toward each other. I think it’s mostly flap and little muscle, though, as they seem to come out of their boxing matches quite unharmed.

The Fenland Trail in the morning affords a good opportunity to see wildlife moving around the marsh and river areas. This trail connects to the Bow River Trail which actually goes all the way into Banff townsite proper. If you have time, this is a nice easy walk to get to this area without actually having to drive to get to it. The Vermillion Lakes are slightly to the west of the Fenland Trail and you can either walk to them or drive your car and use the pulloffs available. It’s a bit noisy being so close to the Trans Canada Hwy, but the scenery more than makes up for it. Throughout the day you’ll see numerous waterfowl frequenting the area. The real draw, however, is in the evening when the winds are low and the water is still, making the lake surface a mirror reflection of the now beautifully lit Mt Rundle in the background.
