Couldn’t help uploading this shot… I usually stay away from picture postcard imagery, as there are many who do it better, however, I think this image has a certain quality to it that translates the beauty and substance of Venice. The light was amazing that morning.

The Grand Canal in the grand city of Venezia!!! I don’t think I could ever get tired of taking photos here…
Plazza San Marco, Venice about 2000 or thereabouts. Expensive coffee. Good though. Nice view from the tower and a regular shot by the tourists but then again I was one. Like being a tourist. Like coffee too.

A Summer scene from the Piazza San Marco, Venezia. Or better known to Anglophones as St. Mark’s Square, Venice. / The guy in the red shirt is selling ice-creams from his mobile freezer box, I thought it was a worthy photo opp’ at the time, especially as the tide was rising which meant the Piazza would soon have a few inchs of water covering it’s stone and marble surface. / As for the tech, I started by using this method in the link, made slight changes as required for each photo. / http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157594577686705/ / I’ve received heaps of mail regarding these pictures, I couldn’t possibly reply to them all, just too many, but I did my best.
During my three week stay in Italy last summer, I had taken around 200 to 300 pictures nearly each day I was there – it comes with the euphoria of being in a foreign country for the first time. This was one of them (out of nearly 3,800 total!) I’m still looking through all of them to see which ones are worthy of being taken into “the lab” hehe

For me, the essence of Venice is captured in this shot, the constant sound of lapping water, the clip, clap of shoes on the stone pavement, diverse architecture and the gondolas tied up at the end of the day, but although the music ceases momentarily on the canals it will soon begin again behind costumed and masked performers inside a beautifully maintained Opera house or Church. To really feel the magic of Venice it is essential to stay for a while and wander the maze of pathways and bridges until you find a breathtaking “vista” of your own!

Over and under the Calatrava bridge, Venice, Italy. / We were lucky enough to be able to float underneath the bridge as well and I was so surprised to notice that you can see the people walking over it. Most of the bridge walking area is made of glass, and last night I went over it for the first time since it was opened last month and only just realised that there was this interesting photo opportunity. I liked the idea of combining the two aspects in this diptych. / For the left hand image I was able to set up a tripod and focus decently. For the right hand image I was in a boat being tossed around in the Grand Canal beneath the bridge, and had to use an automatic stability setting. Hence the grainy result. Optimal viewing for cards on a black background.

A remark often attributed to Napoleon (but perhaps more correctly to Alfred de Musset) calls the Piazza San Marco “The drawing room of Europe”. It is one of the few great urban spaces in a Europe where human voices prevail over the sounds of motorized traffic, which is confined to Venice’s waterways. It is the only urban space called a piazza in Venice; the others, regardless of size, are called campi. As the central landmark and gathering place for Venice, Piazza San Marco is extremely popular with tourists, photographers, and Venetian pigeons. The Piazza originated in the 9th century as a small area in front of the original St Mark’s Basilica. It was enlarged to its present size and shape in 1177, when the Rio Batario, which had bounded it to the west, and a dock, which had isolated the Doge’s Palace from the square, were filled in. The rearrangement was for the meeting of Pope Alexander III and the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The Piazza has always been seen as the centre of Venice. It was the location of all the important offices of the Venetian state, and has been the seat of the archbishopric since the 19th century. It was also the focus for many of Venice’s festivals. It is a greatly popular place in Italy even today. Nikon D100 camera Sigma 28/70 lens

Facing Saint Mark Basin, the church plays a central role in the panorama from the Piazzetta. The first St George’s church dates back to the 8-9th century. In 982 the whole island was donated to a Benedictine monk, who founded the adjacent monastery. The present church was begun in 1566, and was not entirely finished before the death of Palladio in 1580. The façade was continued by Vincenzo Scamozzi based on the original architect’s designs and completed in 1610. The church, sometimes designated as a basilica, is a prime example of Palladio’s architectural style, and one of the finest churches he designed. The bell tower, first built in 1467, fell in 1774; the reconstruction was completed in 1791. The Benedictine monks still officiate in the church.

We left from the center of town with a group of about 20 other couples from the ship. As we pulled away, each couple with their own individual gondola, we overheard that another of the couples, lovely young newlyweds, had been given an accordion player and a singer for the evening as a wedding present. I remember trying not to roll my eyes. As we were rowed through the “streets” ... above … each of the gondoliers passed out bottles of Asti Spumanti and paper cups to their patrons. Soon the singer and the accordion player began to serenade the newlyweds, and the rest of us as well. And as the delicious fruit of the vines began to do its happy work, Venice opened her arms to us all. By the time we made it to the Grand Canal, we were all singing along at the tops of our voices. The gondoliers performed some magic with their magnificent, gleaming black boats, forming a fan shape and then a starburst with them all … one never touching the other. It must have been an extraordinary sight from the upper floors of the beautiful old dwellings lining the canal. I know it took our breath away!! A little Mario Lanza, anyone?? Enjoy and dream!! / O Sole Mio ... oh, sing along … you know you want to!!! Image taken with my little Olympus C-5000Z point and shoot.
