So I last year my big brother ran in the Las Vegas Marathon and we all went to cheer him on, this inspired me to train and run my first half marathon in Las Vegas this December. www.lvmarathon.com / I thought it might be great to train for this with others just for fun and support. I’ll keep my training schedule, and progress posted. I am beginning Monday, August 13th. I thought this would also be a great opportunity for photos on the day of the race… I will post them here on the Bubble as well. / A challenge to anyone else who would like to run in this with me, or just train with me to get in shape. Good luck.

Hi everyone, / first I must thank you for your very kind comments and faves. / Today is our daughter’s wedding. I have grabbed a minute to check emails and am so delighted to hear from you all. / This morning we flew over and landed in the Grand canyon by helicopter, AWSOME!! Las Vegas is mind blowing, the biggest theme park I have ever been in my life. / We have seen Cirque du soleil and Phantom (again) and the quality of these shows is top. / So many people here from all over the world, so much gambling. Dave and I just walk round with our mouths hanging open gawp gawp. / Each hotel has a theme, we are in Excalibur- castle of course and last night we went to the Venetian, St. Marks square, canals and singing gondoliers. And over all an almost real sky. / Our darling girl gets married to her love in the Little chapel of the West at 4.00pm. / Four hours to go. / Wow. / so we shall go and spend some time gawping at some of the other theme hotels. / Will try to update later in the trip. / We’re off to New York on Thursday.

When RedBubble first approached me to attend the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) conference in Las Vegas this week, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. The fact that I was buried in 2ft of snow at the time and that the conference was around Super Bowl weekend, was only icing on the cake. They forgot to mention though that the travel budget was tight and my method of transportation was going to be a little untraditional…. After many hours in a cramped, shipping crate (and a few dozen splinters in places I didn’t know existed on my body), I arrived at US customs. While I understand the need for increased security these days, I think the government needs to work on a more, shall we say, welcoming sign: Sore and hungry from the journey, I went in search for a hotel and some supplies for the week: Feeling regenerated after a good night sleep, I finally made it to the conference: Now what the heck is PMA and why would RedBubble want to be there? Well, PMA is sort of the mecca for photo imaging technology and trends. Kinda like what the Detroit Auto show is to the automotive industry. Basically we are constantly searching for even more incredible ways to display and sell your gorgeous art. Well, at least some of us were there for business. We had a little trouble trying to get Tom away from playing with the toys: ....and using them to search for a new…..”wardrobe” / As to what we found? Well, your I’d tell you but RedBubble has threatened me with an even smaller crate on the return flight and I’m a little worried about the air supply. Cheers, / Dave

  • My ParisVegas Series contains photos taken exclusively of landmarks in Las Vegas that are accurate replicas of landmarks in Paris, France. The most famous landmark is the Eiffel Tower, or La Tour Eiffel as the French say. The tower in Vegas is the most accurate replica ever constructed in the world, though it is at one-half scale. The Vegas version was precisely designed and constructed based on original engineering drawings by Gustav Eiffel from 1889. It is even painted the exact same shades of brown as the original, involving three shades, varying from light brown at the top to a darker brown at the base to give the illusion that the tower is of a uniform color while viewed from the base. With such faithfulness, photographs depicting the design of the replica in Las Vegas are, for all intensive purposes, also depicting the design of the original Eiffel Tower in Paris. Another intricate replica is the Arc de Triomphe. The Vegas version is an exact replica of the original at two-thirds scale. The original triumphant arch was completed in 1836 to commemorate major victories during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, the names of which are engraved around the top of the arch. The names of less important victories, as well as those of 558 generals, are engraved on the inside walls. Generals whose names are underlined died in action. The fountain featured in my ParisVegas series is a replica of La Fontaine de Mers. The original bronze fountain was designed and built by Jacob Ignaz Hittorf in 1836 in the Place de la Concorde, the largest square in Paris. The classic building featured in my photographs is based on the Paris Opera House designed by Charles Garnier and built in Paris between 1862 and 1875 on the orders of Napoleon III as part of the great Parisian reconstruction project carried out by Baron Haussmann.

Alright, hoping to illicit some information here …... I have the opportunity to travel to the Grand Canyon this weekend, staying in Williams, AZ. Plannning on going to the South Rim for sure, and maybe paying the North Rim a visit as well. Since I have never been, any photographic advice? I’m taking the D200, Tokina 12-24mm, Nikon 24-120mm and the Sigma 50-500mm and of course the Tripod. I’m hoping to get Sunrise and Sunset shots. On my way back to Las Vegas, I will also try to visit the Skywalk (glass walkway which literally goes over the top of the Canyon). Any advice is appreciated, is the park open 24 hours, for instance?

The first time when I came to Las Vegas, I was without a home and money. On one level, things have change in the years since, but some haven’t ether. All you can eat buffets still abound, though the 99-cent buffet has pretty much joined the nickel cup of coffee. The town can afford to support dozens of new major restaurants. There ’s an expression in LV ” You can’t spend enough money, if it makes money”. With 30 million visitors a years heading here, there’s no limit. Some famous restaurants have got 100,000 people a day- a day walking past their restaurant. This is about to become the hottest visitor town in America. First of all I would like to introduce my favorite places where I have found beauty. Las Vegas itself, as I noticed , is a visitor center for Asians, Hispanic and Americans. Welcome to Las Vegas, the most incredible oasis the world has ever known. / Throughout history, commoners and kings have been drawn to the desert in search of adventure, intrigue, and the wonder of distant lights. Although the footing sometimes was treacherous, the rewards were grand. Time has illustrated that the ancients had the right idea. Las Vegas shimmers like a dream in the middle of the Mojave Desert. It is a place where reality and fantasy mix, a darkly magical destination that exists as much in the mind as in fact. For its millions of annual visitors, a weekend in Las Vegas is a trip to a carnival of Earthly delights. It is a place in which time indeed is relative. Imagine a circus – that never leaves town, and you have begun to appreciate the New Las Vegas. It is a larger than life land lined with casino resorts of intricately developed themes and outright mammoth proportions. Filled with technicolor castles and lions the size of mountains, it is more than a place to gamble. It is also a funhouse filled with entertainment families can enjoy. / But here’s a history lesson: The New Las Vegas isn’t new at all. The city has been evolving toward its status as a multifaceted entertainment mecca for more than half a century. / Long before the days of moving sidewalks and talking statues on the Strip, there was the Hotel Last Frontier. In 1942, theater magnate R.E Griffith and his nephew, William J. Moore, rewrote the pioneer myth by creating an Old West gambling resort with all the amenities. The Last Frontier became known as ” the Early West in Modern Splendor” Splendid, indeed. With its western village and costumed hired help, the Last Frontier featured more than just gambling. Guests could enjoy ,swimming , volleyball, horseback riding and golf. / Where Las Vegas ends, nature begins. Dressed in juniper and pine, teeming with burros, home to deer, coyote, montain lion, and bighorn sheep, bejeweled with Red Rock Canyon’s stunning sandstone and Mount Charleston’s snow-capped peak, the Spring Mountains provide a rich retreat to nature starting just 10 miles from Vegas Vic and Fremont Street.

The Warrior and his Painted Horse ride in united spirit on their journey and quest. I am the warrior. Sometimes I dream of myself in the masculine form, other times I dream of myself in the feminine form. i believe that my dreams are influenced by whatever kind of power I am feeling at the time. Photograph taken just after sunrise on a cold winter morning ~ about minus -10 F degrees. Great day for fishing for Whitefish, but baby was it cold outside brrrrrrr. There is frost on the trees, and it was just wonderful all the sparkling light reflecting in the frost, snow and ice._” 2008 Karon Melillo d’Vega / To a wonderful Dad at Christmas / “A Partridge in a Pear Tree“ / Regàtta à Argenteuil / Original Acrylics painting by Karon Melillo d’Vega 1987 / “My study of the great Claude Monet and his beautiful painting / “Regàtta à Argenteuil ~ “I truly admire his amazing works and skills and he is one of my major influences” 2008 Karon Melillo d’Vega / Charming Farm / “It was fun playing with colours, when i tried the pink on the sky it just made it really pop out LOL“ / Seasonal Transition / “Original Acrylics painting by Karon Melillo d’Vega“ / “I was living in New Jersey at the time that I painted this from my memory of Colorado. Photographed in August 2008 ~ the Mission Mountains and the Mission valley with a view of the community of St. Ignatius. This area i’m viewing is owned by the Confederated Tribes and Nations of Salish-Kootenai Flathead Indians Reservation” / Diamond Lake Montana / “_One of my favourite pristine lakes of Montana, / Diamond Lake is a volcanic crater lake located at approximately 5400 feet elevation high in the mountains of western Montana near the Idaho border. Lush forests of the Lolo National Forest, springs and creeks, and an abundance of wildlife and wilderness surround this beautiful fresh-water spring and creek fed lake. Teeming with Brook Trout and native Cutthroat Trout as well as colourful frogs and many species of waterfowl, it’s such an exhilirating experience to take a canoe out on the lake and spend the day fishing. The water is so crystal clear that i can see down to the bottom of the lake and watch the fish swimming around in the underwater plants and tree logs that have sank to the bottom. With heavy snowfall during the winter, the spring melt and runoff causes this lake to rise dramatically, and some of the trees which were growing near the banks will fall into the lake. Trees that have fallen recently are floating and drifting constantly ~ creating a delightful habitat for miniature landscapes growing on the logs, while other trees which have been floating on the lake for years become water-logged and sink to the bottom. This creates a wonderful underwater habitat for the fish. It is written that Diamond Lake was once a volcano that erupted approximately 10,000 years ago and this lake was formed as a result. I must say that while canoeing in this lake it is a sensational experience knowing this is a volcanic crater lake. i cannot describe the emotions felt while being in a canoe in this lake ~ it is wonderful_” / Lilac Blossoms / “I love the beauty and fragrance of lilacs in springtime“ / MacIntosh Apple Blossoms / “From the tree in the meadow on my land“ / Diamond Lake / “Diamond Lake literally sparkles like diamonds in the evening sun. Photograph taken from my canoe. It was a wonderful and delightful experience to be canoeing on the lake as the sun was setting, the sunlight was dancing on the water. There was a gentle breeze which rippled the water and it was so fun to be canoeing and fishing and enjoying this pristine wilderness. Caught some very nice Brook Trout“ / The Clearwater River in Winter / ”_ I love the Clearwater River. Born in the beautiful mountains of Montana near Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness area, this pristine fresh water river is teeming with life. Largest crayfish i have ever seen in my entire life, and a wonderful variety of Trout including Rainbow, Cutthroat, Bull, Brown, as well as Whitefish. This wild and beautiful wilderness is abundant with wildlife and Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, a variety of Hawks, Great Horned Owls and Swans. One of my favourite rivers to fish, and favourite areas to hike and explore. The only way to get this shot is to stand on the bridge of the highway which crosses the river, very dangerous, but worth it_” / Chinese Ringneck Pheasant / “This is one of the Chinese Ringneck Pheasant roosters that I raised from 1-day old chicks. i purchased them from a hatchery. I think he is really beautiful. and once a year the pheasants molt their feathers. I collect the feathers, especially the tail feathers to use in arts and crafts. No matter that these pheasants were hand raised since babies, they remain always wild. They sleep indoors at night. I have built for them wonderful flight pens that are large and completely enclosed, thereby protecting them from cougars, coyotes and great-horned owls. They have perches which I made from lodgepole pine. As you can see, this rooster is standing next to the door entry into his house, which is constructed inside a log cabin. When I go inside the log cabin, there are doors of entry into each of the houses where I add fresh straw for bedding and nesting materials. The hens lay beautiful eggs, which are delicious to eat and quite a treat. Once a year the hens will sit a nest of eggs and hatch the cutest little babies!“ / “When I am exploring in the wilderness, I take a much different approach than most “hikers”. I usually hike barefoot (weather permitting) and I walk softly and carry a big gun. LOL I have encountered cougars and bears many times, which always gives me such a heartracing experience. We acknowledge each other and we separate ourselves from each other. Because i only takes a few steps at a time while absorbing the scenery, sounds and movements, I have had the delightful experience of up close and personal encounters with a wide variety of wildlife. One time, I had camped in a tent overnight, and rose early the next morning to walk by the creek ~ (in my barefeet) ~ as I was standing with my back to the creek, I heard the sound of a stick breaking, and without moving my body only turned my head to look back over my shoulder ~ and there was an enormous 7-point Bull Elk drinking from the creek not 20 feet away from me! Involuntarily I spoke out loud a sudden sharp intake of air and said “IT’S AN ELK!!!” I don’t know why I said it, the words just came out! The Elk reared up on its hind legs so surprised because he did not know I was standing right there in front of him until I spoke. He reared up on his hind legs, spun around and ran so fast back into the forest it sounded like thunder!” by Karon Melillo d’Vega

I first came across one of my Bubble friends – Susanne Correa when I found my favourite little pit bull terrior here on the bubble named Freckles Since that time Susanne has been working so incredibly hard building her portrait photography skills as well as getting her new Las Vegas photography business up and running. It’s a pure pleasure to see the growth in her portraits. I honestly can see her photographs getting published one day… perhaps in collaboration with the Las Vegas NSPCA that she’s been giving her time to for such a long time. So this is a shout out for this very hard working lady. She’s proved that by taking the plunge to do what she loved and then working very hard to get it.. it really can happen. Check out her wonderful new website/business here I predict good things for Vegas Little Rascals. :D
