Today I received the other Calendar I put together, to the one I spoke about here This one I’ve called simply “Vector” and is just a bit of a general selection of the TBO goodness. / Cover / Jan / June / Nov I will politely mention that they’re just a smidge on the dark side – my keen TBO eyes notice these things. Yet, all ticks in the superb boxes for everything else!! :) Would love to see the artist’s name on the front, and the title of the Calendar just quietly. Much Love and Love Ya Bub, /

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the featured and popular pages on Red Bubble, and wondering where all the painters, illustrators and graphic artists are?! There are some AMAZING artists working in these media on the site, but it just seems like they’re all being lost in the system. I have nothing against photography or the photographers, but it’d be nice to see a more even spread. So – do your bit! Upload your best painting, illustrative or graphic pieces Seek out painted and illustrated works Comment, fave and watch! The popular algorithm is a closely guarded Red Bubble secret, however I’m sure doing the above things can help boost painting and illustration on this site. I know we can all help bring attention to the amazing artists on this site who deserve to have a little light shone on them! I will go through my own watch list and select and feature artists who I think deserve to be a little more popular. I have sent in my request to have an Illustration group on RB, and Kathleen emailed me back a few days later and said that many people had requested the same thing and that they were nutting out a plan for launching such a group. I really can’t wait, I do think a group dedicated to illustrators might be the shot in the arm needed for illustrative artists. If you’re with me, let me know!! Spread the word! (I have submitted this to a few groups, please let me know if this is appropriate – because I think it is, and highly beneficial to us all!!)

Hi Kids!! We know I get a bit excited about my work and tend to post it before I consider all the options of cool ™! So originally we had this, he looks nice, very cool work indeed! But then i thought YES he should be grey…... / and then i thought sure, but lets do that thing so the cup is whatever the colour of the tea is, i like that trick… i had it so the saucer changed too, but we were losing too much detail with the dark vs the light tees. Check him out here – Earl was rather roboty to begin with! / / ... and what the nose is now was going to be the mouth – ahh so many ways you could do this!! too much fun! Someone is chatty tonight! ;) Much Love, /

I’ve been madly thumping away in my vector shop of late. The latest little creation is this horned beauty … I whipped it up for the Tooheys TED696 competition. They are about to launch their new 696 ml long neck, and they want artists to create an arty paper bag for it. If you get a chance, all you need do is go to the “Gallery” section, slide the little green slider to “I’m digging it” and hit “Submit vote”. You don’t even have to register. They’ve commissioned one of my favourite artists, Shepard Fairey (of OBEY Giant fame), so in the unlikely event it wins, I will be in very good company indeed.
Hi Kids, As this …
Hi Kids, As this is such an epic piece, and took me a few weeks to complete, I thought I’d put a bit of an explanation about it here. It’s all almost like a bit of a “best of TBO” with all your fav Geishas at a Tea Party, along the lines of the Original Tea Party I’ve redone 7 geishas for this, which are, (in no particular order): Osaka Nights / Yakuza Babe / Bloody Mary (my fav) / Phoenix / Frosti / Marymary (The Gardener) / Tea Geisha (“remixed” a few times now, she was half done in the first place) / Enjoy Kids!! (phew) Go back to The Geisha Tea Party Much Love, /

I have just been browsing Coudal Partners’ Layer Tennis. Matches consist of a ten volley round of vector tennis between two graphic artists. It got me to thinking – sure, none of us is a Veerle Peters or an Armin Vit (yet) but why don’t we give it a crack? Guidelines (you know what pirates say about guidelines) Players must use illustrator Matches take place with two players Each match consists of ten rounds Each volley must use an element from the previous player’s volley (unless it is the first volley, where the first player to volley gets to “set the scene”) All volleys must use original work (no stock photos or vectors) Players must wear those tennis socks with a bobble at the heel Questions / Are you up for it? Do you have any ideas where we could host this marvellous (yet friendly) competition? How long should each artist get for a “volley”? Do you think Coudal Partners would sue us for using the term “Layer Tennis”? Can you think up a better name? / How about this for five minute’s work? It’s nerdy, makes me giggle and illustrates the idea of the “volleying” involved without ripping off the original title!
“Creativity” talks with Rubyred! / ...
“Creativity” talks with Rubyred! / How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? / As well as being a creative person by nature, I’m employed to be creative. I work as Head of Graphic Design for an international publishing and events company. I’ve worked as a graphic designer for over fifteen years and as most arty types would tell you, you can go through periods where you feel drained of any sense of creativity and end up just going through the motions. I was going through one of those periods when I stumbled upon RedBubble. Joining and participating in the Bubble community has given me back the enthusiasm for design and creativity. I have renewed energy at work and my projects are benefiting because of it. In terms of other aspects of my life, I’ve started to see a wider picture. I’ll look at global issues in more detail than before, to see if I can represent graphically a particular issue whether it’s oil, war or the Beijing Olympics for example. I like to involve my two young children with art projects as a way of them expressing themselves. Kids can have a lot of distractions these days and being able to sit down with them ‘sticking and making’ gives me and them, a lot of pleasure. It’s a cliché but the simplest things are often the best and that often applies to design. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful / I find it hard to point at one person, or even one moment. But, when I uploaded one of my earliest and currently most popular t-shirts to RedBubble (Winds Of Change), the response was fantastic. The comments I received really lifted me and gave me a needed confidence boost. The fact that you can reach a huge audience of like minded people through one website is amazing and I thank everybody who spares the time to view, comment, favourite and purchase my work. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you / In no particular order, here goes: / Environmental Footprint by nofrillsart. / / I could pick many pieces from Glen’s folio, in fact, I often check his pages before I start work on a new piece because a few times recently I’ve come up with a great idea only to discover Glen was there long before me. He has a very sharp creative mind that is well worth checking out. / Binalong Avenue by Danny. / I discovered this when Cathie Tranent listed it as one of her 5 favourite pieces in her interview. It’s a very moving piece of writing. / The Geisha Tea Party by thickblackoutline. / / An epic piece of illustration greatness, the details just keep coming and coming. / Clepsydra by Yanmos. / / I know it’s one of yours Yannis, but I do like people who have a strong consistent style, and you certainly have that. / Oil Kills by Frank Stillitano. / / A great piece of bold, powerful and meaningful graphic design – just what I like! I could have listed so many more, apologies to everyone I missed. The quality of most of the artists and work on this site continues to impress and inspire me. Thanks to RedBubble for providing the vehicle and long may the journey continue. Thank you very much Roger for your time! / Jo O’Brien ’s idea Mission Share The Love

Hey all, I’m looking to illustrate a kid’s book.. a Monster ABC. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and originally I was planning on doing the art in my usual vector style eg. Clive the Bunyip However, while as an adult I do love the clean lines and bright colours vector art gives me, I know kids books in general tend more towards the texture and visual richness of traditional art styles, paint and pencil and the like. My latest illustration, as well as being an entry into the Drawing Day challenge, was a chance for me to experiment with a more painterly style. A friend suggested that the painted work is more warm and friendly, and would be a better style for kids. The downside is it’s very new to me, so I’ll have to learn techniques and try to improve as I go. That illustration was done very quickly while our baby was sleeping, so it’s a bit messier than I’d be looking at anyway. So here is my question. Which style is better? The vector art is good because it’s bright, and I’m comfortable with the style – the work will be more polished and cleaner. The painted style has greater depth and warmth to it, although it’s not as finished and I would need to learn a lot as I go. Or I could do something in between.. clean vector lines like ink with painted colours for the texture. What do you think?
Has anybody work on vector art? I’m trying to understand more about it. So, if you’d Bmail me I’d appreciate it.

Vector art is created using graphics software programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop and Inkscape. The pen tool is used to create points, lines and curves which make up the final image. Vector graphics files store the lines, shapes and colours that make up an image as mathematical formulae so that images can be increased in size without becoming pixelated. It takes some practice to master the art of using the pen tool but a little patience and persistence can result in some wonderful illustrations: As these examples demonstrate, vector graphics can be used to create all types of art, from basic logo designs to intricately illustrated scenes. There are hundreds of tutorials available on the web including: How to use Photoshop’s Pen Tool Draw A Realistic Vector Guitar in Inkscape Illustrator pen tool exercises Related RedBubble Groups: A Vector Tshirts Only Group Vector Goodness Lounge Pierre Bézier Fans | The Pen Tool If you’re keen to give this a try and don’t have Photoshop or Illustrator, Inkscape is a great, free software program. As Big Kev used to say … “I’m excited!”. I’ve been contacted by TeeFury who like my Quizzical Bailey design and want to feature it. They only feature ONE t-shirt for every 24-hour period, and sell that shirt remarkably cheaply (US$9 per shirt plus $US2 shipping within the US … slightly more to other countries). And the tees and printing are good quality . Quizzical Bailey goes on sale from midnight to midnight (US Eastern time) on Friday November 27. That’s from 4pm on Friday Australian eastern time. I’ll be sharing the proceeds with Jenni , who kindly allowed me to base my drawing on her photo of Bailey.
