Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hasdeztwazi, or “spiral rock arches” by the Navajo, is located a few kilometers away from the upper Antelope Canyon and is a more difficult hike. The vaulted ceilings of Tintern Abbey in South Wales are no longer there, but the glorious skeleton remains. As you travel down Tintern Valley, when you come around the bend and spy the Abbey, it takes your breath away and you can see why Wordsworth had so much to say about it.

The main post office of the Dutch city of Utrecht was built in 1924 and is a prime example of the “School of Amsterdam” architectural style. One of the few masterpieces of this style outside of Amsterdam. it is a style that is related to art deco and expresionalism. the style was applied to all manner of buildings, including homes and apartment blocks, and was partly a reaction to what was considered bourgeois and religiously inspired neo-gothic and other revival styles, as well as to the extremely sober architecture of Hendrik Petrus berlage. it is a style that is imbued with socialist ideals; cheap housing for the educated labourer and with utilities focussed on teaching the inhabitants. in a building complex built in this style you would often find a reading room, a library or a meeting hall at its centre point. institutions that prevented the social and intellectual development of the inhabitants such as cafes and especially churches were kept far away from these communities. The hall also features six giant statues in bluestone, one symbolizing each continent and one symbolizing trade and prosperity. A seventh statue guards the main entrance. You can see a picture of that here
