/ Another in my herbal series / Herbs as Medicines / Thyme: has a long and varied history of both medicinal and culinary use. / Before the days of refrigeration, a drop of thyme volatile oil was placed in a gallon of milk to keep it from spoiling. The herb is still used in a number of herbal remedies, including as a treatment for coughing, asthma and emphysema. / Uses: You can drink thyme tea for relief from coughs, bronchitis, and common colds. (Combining thyme with licorice or mint improves the flavor.) Thyme has a pronounced effect on the respiratory system; in addition to fighting infections, it dries mucous membranes and relaxes spasms of the bronchial passages. Gargling with thyme tea can reduce swelling and pus formation in tonsillitis. / Preparation & Dosage: / Infuse 1 teaspoon of dried or 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme in 1 cup of water. Drink 1 to 4 cups of tea per day to treat an acute respiratory infection or other type of infection. / Dilute thyme essential oil with olive or other vegetable oil and rub it into the chest and upper back to treat lung infections and coughs. / Combine 1 drop of thyme oil with 1/2 teaspoon olive oil for adults, or with 1 teaspoon olive oil for children or those with sensitive skin. / Wash your hands immediately after applying it. To help fight infection in the nose, sinuses, and lungs, inhale thyme vapor. / /

A lovely young female variegated meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum) paused long enough for a detailed portrait. The ommatidia stand out cleanly in this 1:1 macro shot. Soft orange flowers bloom over variegated green and white foliage. Although it can’t withstand the cold winters north of zone 7 it prefers shaded heat and wet feet; too much sun leads to the discoloration shown here. Bob Hayes of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens discovered this plant growing in Germany and named it ‘Stuttgart’. Mature plants (a rhizome rather than a bulb) reach 6’ and higher depending on the growing season and care. This plant, at the Whetstone Park of Roses in Columbus OH is well over seven feet in September. Image is also available as a Greeting Card.

This painting is done in acrylic paint on watercolor paper. The colors include scarlet red, mango, celery green and white.
These beautiful roses were in an historic church called “The White Dove” or St. Xavier del Bloc Mission outside of Tucson, AZ. With so many beautiful restored statues and paintings to photograph I just had to add these roses to the list. Anything with a variegated color is enhanced with the Orton effect because the main attribute seems to be in popping the color. Enjoy! Mary Ann
