  • I believe this was my first early wake up to go out and shoot a sunrise seascape. Only a couple of weeks back we were at Narrabeen with friends. It was a late afternoon and I just could not believe the colour. I was determined to come back with my camera. That particular morning was just magic. Perfectly still, mild and the colours did not dissapoint. • Oil. 80×80cm ‘Experts calculated that in the heyday there were up to 4,000 bottle kilns in Stoke-on-Trent with as many as 2,000 still standing in the 1950’s. The Clean Air Act of 1953 sounded the death-knell for the smoky, coal fired oven. There are 47 still standing today – all are listed buildings.’

  • The Tibetan word Bardo means literally “intermediate state” – also translated as “transitional state” or “in-between state” or “liminal state”. / There are six traditional bardo states known as the Six Bardos: the Bardo of This Life, the Bardo of Meditation, the Bardo of Dream, the Bardo of Dying, the Bardo of Dharmata (Reality) and the Bardo of Existence. I’ve long been fascinated by the concept of the various bardos and this image has a dream bardo kind of feel for me. Many thanks to bodhiimages / for the use of his beautiful poem / bardo/song for the dead to be at peace, in this heart of hearts
/ even when one, so precious, departs
/ seeing the truth, neither here nor there
/ trusting this life, so unique, so rare
/ everything changes, in the blink of an eye
/ knowing the mind is as vast as the sky
/ clouds may come and rain may fall
/ and strings of the heart will always call
/ let them play their sweet songs of joy
/ a melody so pure, no thought could destroy / be at one and look within, remain peacefully aware
/ of everything and everyone, let love shine

  • Conditions were far from good when I took this – in fact Betty was having kittens and cursing my hobby for all she was worth! But honestly, what right minded photographer could resist such a scene? And then the icing on the cake was the spray almost enveloping the big Western Gull and giving him a ghost like appearance. / We were at Cape Leeuwin, on the far south westerly corner of Western Australia about 440 kms from Perth, parked beside the water wheel on a gloriously rough and overcast day. The rock with the gulls was right in front of me and I was wondering whether it would be worth a photo because the light was Bad and it was drizzling. Suddenly the sun tried to break through and I was out of the car in a flash – wind or no wind, drizzle or no drizzle, this was my chance. There was no time to erect the tripod – I leaned back on the bonnet of the car and proceeded to fire away and it was only afterwards that I realised I had not given a thought to aperture or shutter settings. However I was on aperture priority so all was well. / How many of us, I wonder, do exactly the same in order to get that one magic photo? Most of us, I bet! / Camera was my Sony Alpha 350 dslr / 55-200 lens with cp filter / Aperture priority – f8. / hand held / As will be pretty obvious, I also did a bit of post processing to bring some contrast into what was an almost washed out sky and also to sharpen up the ocean slightly (I have never been one for “milky” looking waves)
