  comics collage 9 1/2” x 7 1/2” Summer 2006 This piece is about insomnia after the terror of waking from a nightmare. The black horse is a visual pun meant to represent a literal “night mare” Religious elements I added to give the viewer a sense of impending doom making this one of my darkest and most startling collages. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— The materials used in this work were derived from various magazines, perhaps including, but not exclusive to; National Geographic, National Geographic Travel, Architectural Digest, Outside, Smithsonian, In Style, Playboy, Transworld, Reader’s Digest, Sailing, Sports Illustrated, Field & Stream, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Skateboarder. I have altered, rearranged, and used the fragments of photographs and advertisements published in these magazines in a way inconsistent with their original context so that my derivative works do not infringe on any copyright. However, on the off chance that anyone recognizes any photograph fragments I have used in my work let me know so i can credit it properly. Thanks.

  Saline Valley Sunrise

  Saline Valley is a large, deep, and arid valley in the northern Mojave Desert of Southern California. Most of it became a part of Death Valley National Park when the park expanded in 1994. This area had previously been administered by the BLM. It is located northwest of Death Valley proper, south of Eureka Valley, and east of the Owens Valley. The valley’s lowest elevations are about 1000 feet (300 m) and it lies in the rain shadow of the 14,000 foot (4300 m) Sierra Nevada Range, plus the 11,000 foot (3300 m) Inyo Mountains bordering the valley on the west. A large dry lake occupies the center of the valley. The west end of the lake supports a salt marsh, which contains a variety of plant and animal life. The marsh is fed by a perennial stream from Hunter Canyon. North of the lake is a large area of low sand dunes. There are a number of hot springs in the northeast corner of the valley. The water temperature at the source of these springs averages at 107°F (42°C). Saline Valley is a closed or Endorheic basin. If filled with water it would be over 4000 feet (1200 m) deep, form a lake with a surface area of roughly 500 square miles (1,300 km²), and hold approximately 500 million acre-feet (600 km³) of water.

  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 If it looks like the Geelong Botanical Gardens in infrared then I shall surely know that there is nothing to fear. It feels, to me at least, so much like another dimension – that of death perhaps, or even of some other place that is familiar yet disturbingly different.
