i was on the way to film a musical poetry reading at an underground beatnik club in kings cross (syd) which was awesum and a few people needed a lift in my ute, so i set up a bed in back so they could travel comfy

A beggar on Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood, California. His sign said, “Why lie/I need beer.” I thought it was funny but I still didn’t chip in for his booze. I managed to sneak a photo just to get the funny sign when he wasn’t looking, but it got shadowed out. Anyway, I ended up liking the photo. Edit 9/08: I managed to make his sign more visible without ruining the whole picture. Hope you like.

Today he is reading “Galilee” by Clive Barker I was inspired to pen the following: Who I Am Within these pages that I read / I find the man I used to be, / Husband, father, son and more / Run to the bank, run to the store. A life on track for great success / If only I could take the stress, / So many demands, so little time / Yelling, drinking, lost my mind Don’t pity me, I’m who I am / It’s you that lives the lies. / Money drives you to despair, / You do things you despise. Now I just read about those things / That brought me to this place, / The money, cars, and homes you crave / Will finally bring you to disgrace. Although initially inspired by Old Father Time (thanks Mark), when finished, this image reminded me so much of classical depictions of Odin, the wanderer’s hat, the missing eye … Odin (pronounced /ˈoʊdɨn/ from Old Norse Óðinn)is the king of the Aesir and the ruler of Asgard, is considered the chief god in Norse paganism. Homologous with the Anglo-Saxon Wōden and the Old High German Wotan, it is descended from Proto-Germanic Wōđinaz or Wōđanaz. The name Odin is generally accepted as the modern translation; although, in some cases, older translations of his name may be used or preferred. His name is related to ōðr, meaning “fury, excitation”, besides “mind”, or “poetry”. His role, like many of the Norse gods, is complex. He is associated with wisdom, war, battle, and death, and also magic, poetry, prophecy, victory, and the hunt. Odin is an ambivalent deity. Old Norse (Viking Age) connotations of Odin lie with “poetry, inspiration” as well as with “fury, madness and the wanderer.” Odin sacrificed his eye (which eye he sacrificed is unclear) at Mímir’s spring in order to gain the Wisdom of Ages. A while ago there was a programme on the radio about homelessness, and one of the people featured was a man in his 30’s or 40’s who had been an architect, running his own business. One morning his wife and two small children were killed in a car accident. His life collapsed and he ended up homeless, living on the streets and, like so many, experiencing chronic alcohol problems. I don’t know what happened to him.

You have to wonder what this man’s story is. Is he homeless? Does that bag belong to him? Fox Chase Cancer Center is in Pennsylvania but there are associated hospitals in New York. Very sad.
