This is the kitchen of a cottage built in the 1930’s in Essex, United Kingdom. The cottage is now a museum full of interesting artifacts from that period in time. In the late 1920’s and 1930’s plots of land were bought by people who lived in London, so that they could build weekend retreats to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. But the family who used this cottage as their weekend retreat ended up living here full-time, because their house got bombed during the 2nd World War and they had nowhere else to go. The people who lived in this area were often known as “The Plotlanders” and out of the 600 cottages that were built in this area this is the only cottage that remains.

© 2009 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved ~~ A brick hearth dating to the late 18th century dominates this corner of the kitchen in the Isaac Stevens House in Wethersfield, Connecticut. This room has another, larger baking hearth as well, for cooking was a time-consuming and continuous process in colonial households. Turning out the meats, soups, breads and pies for a large family occupied a the better part of every day, and in the summer must have been a hellish task, for Wethersfield sits on a cove of the Connecticut River and the heat and humidity were likely overwhelming. Note the size of the ladle hanging on the wall next to the hearth, and the pewter ware on the table. Painted from an original photograph shot in June 2009.
