  • This series of photographs was taken in 2004. I happened to be down by the lake with an old friend when one of my neighbor’s dogs, Buddy, came dashing our way and headed straight for the water. There’s something nice about seeing dogs happy and carefree. Lelia Katherine Thomas / leliathomas@gmail.com OR Twitter @leliathomas / www.leliathomas.com —-—- Want a free, high quality copy of this? • Welcome to Autumn in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado!

  • I was on a five-day trip to California and was audaciously trying to fit in the Mojave Desert, Death Valley and Yosemite National Park all in one go. Sleep ended up being the factor that lost out on this particular road trip, and on this particular morning I got myself up at 4.30am to head down to Mono Lake and catch the sunrise before scooting up over the pass into Yosemite. I had the best weather a photographer could ask for, and the morning as I cut through the mountains over Tioga Pass, I had cool blue skies and still clear air, and I was pretty much the only person around. I hit this little lake about halfway in to the Village and it was just enchanting- the water was so calm, the reflection achingly beautiful, and the sunlight on the trees was magnificent- I just had to stop for a few minutes and roll off some shots before jumping back into the car and barrelling down to the Valley itself. • Took this as the tide was going out on Short Sands Beach in York, Maine. The seagull’s tracks in the sand and the water coming in from the tide made an awesome image like a drawing of a tree in the sand. Sep 2008 BEST VIEWED LARGER

  • Laurel Branch and the 80-foot high Laurel Falls are named for mountain laurel, an evergreen shrub which blooms along the trail and near the falls in May. The trail is 2.6 miles roundtrip and considered moderate in difficulty. Every year over 200,000 visitors hike well-worn trails to view Grotto, Laurel, Abrams, Rainbow, and other popular waterfalls in the park. Large waterfalls attract the crowds, but smaller cascades and falls can be found on nearly every river and stream in the park. The Great Smoky Mountains abound with the two ingredients essential for waterfalls—ample rainfall and an elevation gradient. In the Smokies high country, over 85” of rain falls on average each year. During wet years, peaks like Mt. Le Conte and Clingmans Dome receive over eight feet of rain. This abundant rainfall trickles and rushes down the mountain sides, from high elevation to low, sometimes dropping more than a mile in elevation from the high peaks to the foothills at the park’s boundary. • This is the top section of a three part waterfall in Glacier National Park in Montana. I was hiking there for three days before I went riding in Canada. This waterfall flowed eventually into a glacial loch, blue in colour and quite high up in the mountains. This was the walk where you had to ring bells to prevent you stumbling on bears whhich may have wandered on to the track!!! I didn’t have a bell so I sang out loud, until I realised after a few hours that I was not alone !!! I got strange looks from a ‘loud bell ringing’ family as they made their way back down!!

  • This shot was taken many moons ago in Hot Springs, Arkansas whilst I was attending college there! The lush green woodlands and the beautiful countryside is very soothing and relaxing as well as inspiring. Beautiful views of nature and man made structures work together to create serene scenes like this one. Man made and God made working partnership together to complete the circle. Just looking at it reminds me of the early autumn days before winter started moving in. The smell of freshness soon after the rain had fallen. I look forward to the day when i might return to Hot Springs and capture more inviting images such as this one. I am just a country boy at heart you know! I took this with my Canon AE-1 program / I wish I had my camera settings to give, but I do remember the day quite vividly and i can give a good estimate to what they might have been. It was morning, about 8 am, and it was a bit dull because it had rained earlier. If I had to guess: 1/250 / f/5 / ISO 200

  • Taken at the Knoxville Zoo, April 2009 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Black-bellied Whistling-duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis), formerly also called Black-bellied Tree Duck, is a whistling-duck that breeds from the southernmost United States and tropical Central to south-central South America. In the USA, it can be found year-round in parts of southeast Texas, and seasonally in southeast Arizona, and Louisiana’s Gulf Coast. It is a rare breeder in such disparate locations as Florida, Arkansas, Georgia and South Carolina. It is widely known as “pijije” (also “pixixi” or “pichichi”), “chiriría” or “sirirí” in Latin America, though this can also refer to other whistling-ducks and a qualifyer such as “ala blanca” or “aliblanco” (“white-winged”) is usually added to signify this species. In Mexico, it is also called pato maízal (“cornfield duck”) due to its habit of visiting such fields after harvest. And since it is one of only two whistling-duck species native to North America, it is occasionally just known as “the whistling duck” in the southern USA. The Black-bellied Whistling-duck is an unusual species among North American waterfowl. With its long legs, peculiar appearance and odd habits, it was described by one early American ornithologist[citation needed] as “most un-duck-like”. Its numbers are increasing in North America. • Feature Image – All Water in Motion and Reflections in Water Group “Multnomah Falls is a waterfall on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, located east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, along the Historic Columbia River Highway. The falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual 9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet (189 m).
