Yosemite National Park – April 2008 Dragged myself out of bed at 7am with a raging temperature and flu in minus temps. Skated with tripod along an ice covered bridge to re-shoot this waterfall after a corrupt CF card, anything for a shot huh?? Taken on the trail to “The Basin” on Friday October 3/08. Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-55mm lens. / The Basin is a naturally occuring granite bowl in the White Mountains range and is part of the Franconia Notch State Park, located in the heart of the popular White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire USA / On this trail are cascades and waterfalls leading to The Basin, which is believed to have been eroded 15,000 years ago while the North American ice sheet was melting. The Basin has been smoothed by small stones and sand, whirled around by the Pemigewasset River. / I didn’t make it as far as The Basin this time (have been there in the past), because I was caught by surprise in an unexpected downpour. I quickly shoved my camera into the case and wrapped my sweater around it. Then looked for my friend Wanda who was nowhere to be found. She had made it all the way to The Basin ahead of me. I was lucky to find cover under the roof of an outhouse at the beginning of the trail. It rained and hailed for about 20 minutes. When my friend Wanda made it back, she was soaking wet. This is one of two shots I managed to get. ! “Clouds on the Water, Fire Near the Sky” / Purchase a Mouse Pad of this image I happened onto this gorgeous sunrise over the White River at a time when the water was at its lowest. I was delighted to catch the calm surface for reflections, as the low rising sun was casting its first orange glow over the autumn colors.

Multnomah Falls, Oregon, USA, Taken Summer Vacation 2007 Multnomah Falls is a waterfall on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, located east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, along the Historic Columbia River Highway. The falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual 9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet (189 m). Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the State of Oregon. / The Multnomah Creek Bridge on the Historic Columbia River Highway. / Colorized picture of the waterfall before the footbridge was addedUnderground springs from Larch Mountain are the year-round source of water for the waterfall, augmented by spring runoff from the mountain’s snowpack and rainwater during the other seasons. A foot trail leads to Benson Footbridge, a 45-foot (14 m)-long footbridge that allows visitors to cross 105 feet (32 m) above the lower cascade. The trail continues to a platform at the top of the upper falls, the Larch Mountain Lookout, where visitors get a bird’s-eye view of the Columbia Gorge and also of “Little Multnomah”, a small cascade slightly upstream from the “upper” falls, which is not visible from ground level. Mount Shuksan is in the North Cascades National Park, Washington State, USA. / This part of the USA is known as “The Pacific North West.” We arrived here good and early, before the crowds arrived, and since there is a highway running all the way to “Artist Point” it can indeed get busy , I guess owing to the fact that it is easily accessible from the Seattle region, straight off the Interstate from Bellingham, an easy drive of less than two hours, and not too remote, / I spotted some postcards and tourist brochures with a variety of images of this scene, and determined to see it for myself. Glad I did. Dolphin at Sea Life Park, Oahu ,Hawaii, USA / I actually swam with the dolphins there and if you recall the movie ” 50 First Dates” with Adam Sandler this is one of the dolphins used in the movie that I swam with. This dolphin is also blind…...amazing they are !! / /

Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Pretty much a tourist snapshot of the Falls, which I thought I would share with you ! / A rather crowded place, justifiably so, who wouldn’t want to see this sight ? The Canyon has some amazing colours, and I found the best time was towards evening to be viewed at it’s best. The vertiginous slopes are very loose and crumbly, and I wondered how those trees maintain their perilous foothold !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polariser, tripod, f22, 1/3 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour adjustments. MORE OF YELLOWSTONE HERE…........

The wayside includes interesting tidepools as well as excellent ocean views and a sandy beach. Developed for day-use, the picnic area is in a pleasant stand of shore pine, spruce and salal. Cape Arago Lighthouse / Description: Long before white settlers arrived in 1853, the Coos Indians lived in villages near the bay, which now bears their name. Just south of Coos Bay and 2.5 miles north of Cape Arago (originally known as Cape Gregory), is a small, detached piece of land with sheer cliffs called Chief’s Island by the Indians. The shape of the island has been aptly described as a bony right-hand fist, with an extended index finger pointing northward. It was on the tip of this finger-like extension that the first Cape Arago Lighthouse would be erected in 1866. After the arrival of white settlers, Coos Bay soon became one of the more important harbors along the Oregon Coast. As the shipments of lumber and coal from the bay grew, so too did the need for a navigational aid to guide vessels to the bay. Oregon’s first lighthouse was built in 1855-1856 near the mouth of the Umpqua River, twenty-five miles north of Coos Bay. However, in 1861 the overflowing river undermined the brick tower, causing it to topple. By this time, the Coos Bay area had surpassed the Umpqua River region in commercial importance, and it was decided that the interests of commerce would be better served by a new light at Cape Arago, rather than reconstructing the light at Umpqua River. Funds were allocated accordingly, and Novermber 1, 1866, the first Cape Arago Lighthouse was illuminated. The octagonal, wrought iron tower was capped with a lantern room housing a fourth-order Fresnel lens and was supported by spindly metal legs. Located at the northern end of the island, the tower was linked via a wooden walkway to a one-and-a-half-story wooden keeper’s dwelling, constructed near the southern end of the island. Rowboats were initially used to access the island, until a low bridge to the island was constructed in 1876. However, high seas cut short the bridge’s life after just two years, and the boats were a necessity once again.
