Peru, Andes
This is one section of the floating islands on Lake Titicaca – the highest navigable lake in the world. The Quechuans ( descendants of the Incas) pull together massive chunks of reeds and create floating beds where they build their houses ( shown here) from reeds. Every year they lay down another layer of reeds as gradually the lower section becomes waterlogged . The islands last for 5 years and they start all over again. Their boats – like long boats (shown here) are also made from reeds. They are mostly fishermen but the ladies are heavily involved in tourism and make all sorts of woven goods and figurines. I have also another picture of the kitchen in one area on their floating island where it is open to the elements but they have heavy metal pots on charcoal type fires. They made us flat scones to eat – which I did with some trepidation!! But I survived!! They are a very friendly people and we went on to Amantani where I stayed the night with a family – . A wonderful and humbling experience that these people can be so happy with so little. The land in the b/g is sloping because we are on a boat moving up and down coming in ready to land . Best seen large.
Reed Boat and Lookout Tower on one of the floating Uros Islands which lay within the marshy region near Puno on Lake Titicaca, Peru. The Uros Islands were built and are continutally being rebuilt using the dried local totora reed or rush. Huts and boats are built out of the same material. The Uros islanders, who are an even older civilisation than the Incas, survive by fishing, handicrafts and tourism.
Dragon head, a common feature on the bow of the reed boats of the Uros Islanders of Lake Titicaca, Peru.
Further to the Dragon Head photo I posted a little while ago, this is what the rest of the boat looks like. Most boats don’t have the “cabin” area and sail like this one. We actually took a leisurely ride in this very boat – great fun and sooooo chilled! Uros Floating Reed Islands, Lake Titicaca, Peru.

The community on the collective Uros Islands on Lake Titicaca, Peru/Bolivia live on floating reed islands. They need constant replenishing in order to prevent their homes sinking into the lake. The colours of their native outfits stands out so well against the fresh vegetation and blue skies.

Lots of Irish £Punts and a bit of £Sterling thrown in…those were the days that I had money in my purse…. / Ireland converted to the €uro currency from the Irish Punt on January 1st 2002 and the Irish currency was gradually withdrawn from circulation. Featured in ‘Images & Ideas – 19th March 2009.
this little green girl was just too cute to past it by…she was so curious but she would like to be photographed as most of the people around…they will hide! / Titicaca lake, Bolivia
After a days drive from Cuzco through the beautiful Peruvian Andes, we finally arrived at Puno which sits on the edge of Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world at an altitude of 3,820m (12,500ft). This photo I took from our boat overlooking the lake with Puno in the distance, on a trip out to the floating reed islands of the Uros people. I like the glassy reflection of the water and the clouds, which seem to be so close that I could just reach up and grab them.
The Floating Island of Uros. Lake Titicaca. Peru /
The Uros Islands in Lake Titicaca, Peru, are entirely constructed from buoyant Totoras reeds. Tourism provides a large portion of the family income for most families on these islands and the majority of women and children are involved with the production of hand crafts.
