Antelope-Corkscrew Canyon, shows a powerful ray of light coming through the cavern top and illuminating the cave walls in brilliant orange-reddish colors. Antelope Canyon is so unique, it has also become known as The Corkscrew, Corkscrew Canyon, Upper Antelope, Wind Cave, or The Crack. This image was taken inside the cave with a 45 second time exposure to account for reciprocity failure. I use a Canon Elan with a 20mm lens and negative film. I still love the color depth in negative film vs. digital cameras :) Upper Corkscrew Canyon is located around the Navajo Reservations and usually requires a jeep to get you there. This location is just outside Page, Arizona.

Upper Antelope Canyon at noon, Page, AZ The canyon is accessible only by guided tour, lead by Navajo (the land is owned by the Navajo). The tours require reservations, best made in advance, and it can get crowded. The guides do a marvelous job of keeping the groups separated with only one group per gallery at a time. The stories the guides tell of the land, the discovery of the place… are as interesting as the place itself. Flash floods have been known to occur here, so it is best to avoid monsoon season, and stay with your guide at all times. A tripod, plenty of battery power (backups!), and a wide zoom are a must here.

Start: Cathedral Lakes Trailhead, on the Tioga Road .The trail climbs steadily 1,000 ft to Upper Cathedral Lake. / It is beautiful when the snow is still there. However it is best to have your GPS with you, hiking poles and alot of patience. Yosemite

Let there be light, and there was light. And it was good …... This image was taken in Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. This sandstone cavern is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation and is only accessible via four-wheel drive truck and with a Navajo guide. There are a few holes in the ceiling, which let in this perfect beam of light. This place will be visited again, there also is a Lower Antelope Canyon which I didn’t get to see – YET …...

Beautiful in every season, Letchworth State Park, in Perry, NY, lovingly called “the grand canyon of the east” stretches 17 miles along the Genesee River, cutting three gorges some 600 feet deep in many places. The river roars over three separate waterfalls, the highest of which is 107 feet. Lush forest provides beautiful cover for dozens of walking and hiking trails along the river and set the gorge ablaze with color in the fall. This shot is the upper falls – not the tallest of the three – and above it the railroad trestle that believe it or not, I walked across when I was ten years old… before I developed my terrible fear of heights!

The title speaks for it’s self.. and it’s a beautiful spot, especially on a sunny day… I get a little frustrated when I convert my tiff file to jpeg and notice the photo has lost that edge, a bit of vibrance has left it. Does anyone know how to get round this, or indeed does anyone notice the same problem?

On my return visit to Swaledale I just had to try and repeat my earlier Gateway photo, this time with the gate open to feed you into the scene… I didn’t quite manage the same angle, the Gateway shot was done hand held, this was taken from my tripod so the shot was from a lower viewpoint.

Well, if you’ve got uppers and lowers, and the most aggressive get first pick, would YOU pick an upper or a lower “bunk boob”? Seems that the lowers have the advantages of allowing you to lay down and eat and doesn’t gravity pull all the extra swallows down to lower ‘food stations’? Then again, the advantages of being in an upper boob are the ability to stand on lower boobers while proving your dominance and more air while eating. I think I’d go with an upper myself: more boobs available, less waiting. Hmm, I guess the photograph solves the question then: 5 of 8 piglets prefer to stand over someone to eat so the top bunk boob wins by two nipples. I wonder what happens if she lays on her RIGHT side. Is the top bunk position still on the top or to piglets prefer the same boob no matter where it is? As soon as mama rolls over, I’ll tabulate the numbers by nipples since telling the tiny bacon babies apart is still somewhat problematic…

Northern Lights ~ Autumn Equinox / ~ Aurora Borealis ~ / North Pole / Tanana River Valley / Interior Alaska “The solar wind is the outermost atmosphere of our sun. The sun is so hot that it boils off its outer layers, and the result is a constant outward expanding very thin gas. This solar wind consists not of atoms and molecules but of protons and electrons (this is called a plasma). Embedded in this solar wind is the magnetic field of the sun. The density is so low that we may well call it a vacuum. However tenuous it is, when this solar wind encounters a planet, it has to flow around it. When this planet has a magnetic field, the solar wind sees this magnetic field as an obstacle, as protons and electrons cannot move freely across a magnetic field. These charged particles are constrained to move almost always only along the magnetic field. Likewise, when they are forced to move in a specific direction, a magnetic field will move with them or will be bent into the direction of the flow. Whether the magnetic field forces the plasma motion or whether the plasma motion bends the magnetic field depends on the strength of the field and the force of the motion. When the solar wind encounters Earth’s magnetic field, it will thus bend the field unless the field gets too strong. The strength of the magnetic field falls off with distance from Earth. The distance at which the solar wind and the magnetic field of the Earth balance each other is about 60,000 km away, or 1/10 of the distance to the moon. The inside of this volume that is bounded by the solar wind is called the Magnetosphere. At the interface of the solar wind and the magnetosphere, energy can be transfered into the magnetosphere by a number of processes. Most effective is a process called Reconnection. When the magnetic field in the solar wind and the magnetic field of the magnetosphere are anti-parallel, the fields can melt together, and the solar wind can drag the magnetospheric field and plasma along. This is very efficient in energizing magnetospheric plasma. Eventually, the magnetosphere responds by dumping electrons and protons into the high latitude upper atmosphere where the energy of the plasma can be dissipated.
