  I just thought I would sit down and write out a few of the things I do that make my experience in Red Bubble a lot more enjoyable. I’m putting these ideas down in a form of tips, please don’t take these as Gospel!! These are the things I do that I find helps my work get recognized. Things will be different for each of us and we all find our own place. With that said, a lot of these tips will be placing emphasis on recognition. If you wanna be noticed within the Bubble, you have to know what the best way to do that is. Hopefully you can take a little something with you from this that helps you out too :) Oh and just a sub note … I am a photographer, so a lot of my experience is with getting my works seen. Hopefully I don’t place too much emphasis on JUST that side and anyone else can apply some of these tips to whatever creative works you do :) If you can think of any more tips you use … or you are a better writer than I am (THAT MEANS MOST OF YOU!!! LOL) feel free to ADD to this and post it in your own Journal!! PLEASE!! :) Just link back to this original :) Part One – Uploading Choose what you upload carefully It’s soooooo easy to have a group of wonderful works you want to upload and share with everyone that you upload work after work after work. My advice … don’t do it. Why? Because your work will pass so quickly through other people’s Activity Monitor that by the time they look at it again, they probably would have missed a lot of them anyway. Another reason is that if you do this on a regular basis … you may actually stop a lot of people from seeing other works on their AM and so, they may even unadd you as a contact for that very reason. Assume most people are only going to have the time to comment on ONE of your uploaded works. We all have a lot of contacts in RB and like to keep up, so doing the rounds is a Quick way of visiting. It isn’t an indication of our work … it’s a matter of time restraints. Think about what you are going to upload. Have a small list of choices and pick the better 3 or 4 of them. If you have 12 really cool works you want to upload … split the uploads into Days of 4 each … or Half Days of 3 each. And always upload what you consider to be the BEST in these Groups ….... LAST. There are two main reasons for this. Usually the last thing you upload is going to be the FIRST thing others see of you. The other reason has to do with timing which I will touch on now. Choose when you upload Timing when you upload your work has such a significance on the reaction and response to it. Think about it … you are up late … it’s 3am and you just finished working on something and are so excited. So you uploaded it to the Bubble and wait. And wait and wait and wait. Hmmmmmmm. No one is there!!!! Maybe in the morning when people start getting up and load up bubble, the first few might see it … IF they get that in their AM’s. For the most part as people start getting up and posting stuff … suddenly yours starts disappearing off their AM’s and even off the Recent page on the Gallery Page. The best time to upload is when your work is going to be see by the Maximum amount of people. I find the best time for this is in the morning (Before work) or in the evening (After Dinner). It’s most likely at this time you will receive spontaneous responses. And as a last point with timing …. again … upload the 3 or 4 you have picked … timing it so that the LAST and BEST is uploaded at the time that it is going to receive maximum exposure. If you like to see your photos on the Popular pages … try to follow these tips but upload in the morning. The more views, comments and favs you get .. .the higher up the pop. lists your work is going to move .. especially in Today’s most popular list. View all my HOW TO’S

  I put this journal in here, for all to see, as I have been asked quite a few times recently how to do it. So I thought I would just save myself having to type it every time. For all that need help to upload T-shirt designs. / First You need to go into where you upload T shirt images and save the T shirt template to your own personal files. / Then go into your photo program and open a new work area selecting TRANSPARENT in the background drop box. Then set the mega pixels to exactly 2400×3200. / Next put the template on to fit the workspace, and put your image over it centering it on the red lines. When you are happy with the placement etc of your image, delete the template and save the image as a PNG file. It is now ready to upload. / Hope this helps. I decided to put this info in here for all to read, as I had to type at least 4 times last night. / Good luck.

  Okay let me start of by saying, like most painters I’m not much of a photographer. I don’t have a studio set up with a SLR Camera, lighting lamps and tripods set up to take images of my work but then I’m guessing many of you will be in the same situation. / I am just going to give you some hints on how to present your work in the best possible light to load up onto redbubble. 1. Take your photos outside in natural light. Indoor lighting can colour your work a dull yellow colour. / / 2. If your work reflects light, ie oil paintings, varnished work and even some graphite work, then it is much better to photograph your work in open shade. This stops that annoying shiny effect you can sometimes get, and never, ever use a flash. If your work is behind glass it is very hard to photograph, so the big hint is document it before you frame it. / / 3. Try your very utmost to line up work work so that it is as parallel to the camera. This will stop the distortion you can sometimes get on your work. Easiest way I guess it to stand it up 90 degrees against a wall and hold or stand your camera as straight on as possible. / / 4. You want your painting to occupy as much of the viewing space as possible but don’t get to close to your image, this also distorts the image. You are much better of standing back from the image and zooming in. The bigger the painting on your image the greater the resolution you will get at the end. / / These are the four basic hints for taking pictures yourself. Much can also be done after your image is taken. I have photoshop but many other programs can carry out the simple steps I will outline here. Remember we want to represent our paintings as close as possible to the real thing so don’t get carried anyway with post production. 1. Firstly change your image resolution to 300 pixels/inch this is the best resolution to work with (or at least this is what I was taught). / / 2. Make sure your image has the correct rotation, slight misalignments usually can be fixed with cropping. Hopefully your work is free of distortions. There is a way of correcting for this but it is much better to spend time when photographing to get this right. / / 3. Crop the image down so unwanted background is gone. If somebody wants to buy a print of your work I’m sure they wont appreciate half of your wall as well. / / 4. Lastly you can adjust the levels so the image is as close to the real thing as possible. Hopefully this will help some of you out. If anybody wants more information on how to change image size, rotation, cropping and levels I can give some advice on how to do this in photoshop only. If there is a demand I will do it. I also have notes on how to copy indoors but it requires a lot more equipment. Anyway let me know if you would like this also.

  Updates: 11th-Nov-07 added Pixel Dimensions, table of contents. Contents / Introduction / Compression / Pixel Dimensions / Workflow / Aspect Ratios So you’ve come to Red Bubble and like everyone else you want to upload some of your images. But how should I go about getting my camera’s images ready to upload? Firstly, most people have compact cameras and most of these create compressed JPEG (pronounced: Jay Peg) images in the 4:3 ratio. So I will start from this assumption. Compression / Your camera has settings for quality such as: fine, superfine, medium etc. This controls how much JPEG compression is applied to your camera’s images once a picture is captured. / The highest setting such as superfine has the least amount of compression applied to images so the image quality will be the best possible. The resulting file size will also be the largest of all the compression settings. / This is due to the fact that JPEG is a ‘lossy’ compression. Lossy compression removes data from the image and it is never replaced. So minimal compression means less of your image is thrown away resulting in a better quality image but more information to save. Three popular image editing software programs use a lossless compression for their native file formats: / Adobe Photoshop – PSD (e.g. imagename.psd) / Corel PaintShop – PSP / GIMP – XCF Lossless compression, removes data on saving but replaces it on reopening, so you can work on a file indefinitely without loss of quality (or information). Pixel Dimensions / Along with the compression settings your camera will have pixel dimension options. These often start with 640×480 and move up to the maximum that your camera is able to take ie. if the camera is a 7mp camera then the maximum pixel dimensions it will take will be around 7mp. Why ‘around’ 7mp? There is actual pixels and effective pixels. The actual pixels may be 7,300,000 but the pixels that are actually used to create an image might be 6,850,000 or similar; these are the effective pixels. / The effective pixels could also be 7,100,000, rather than, lower than 7mp as above. / Camera makers just round off to the nearest mega pixel. Some camera makers state the actual pixels on the camera casing and advertising rather than the effective pixels which is misleading and dishonest. If there is a possibility your photos will be uploaded to Red Bubble and you want to be able to get the biggest prints possible then you should set your camera to the highest pixel dimensions and the best quality. / On the other hand if you know you are only going to get 6” x 4” or 5” x 7” photolab prints then you can set your camera to the appropriate pixel dimension: Print size…..Pixels….............Megapixels…Camera Setting / 6” x 4”..........1800×1200….....2.16….............3mp / 5” x 7”..........1500×2100….....3.15….............4mp To cover both sizes just set your camera to the 4mp setting. If you never get 5” x 7” prints then set your camera to 3mp. / Not sure how to tell how many pixels your camera settings are? Just multiple both figures: ie. 1800×1200 = 2,160,000 pixels which is 2.16mp. How is the 1800×1200 pixels used by photo labs arrived at? 300DPI resolution is considered photographic quality so: Why bother to set your camera to a lower setting than the maximum? The size of files. 7mp images are bigger than 4mp images, so if you are taking a lot of images you can fit more 4mp images on your camera’s memory card than 7mp images. / Memory cards are large and cheap so why bother? Eventually your images will be transferred to your computer and 7mp images take up more disk space than 4mp images. If you have plenty of disk space and don’t mind larger files then just leave your camera at its highest setting. / The benefit of larger images is you can crop them and still create a 6” x 4” photo prints, and you have the option of larger prints at a good quality. Workflow / Take a photo with a digital camera / Camera compresses image into a JPEG file / Camera’s JPEG file is transferred to a computer / JPEG file is opened in an image editor such as Photoshop. / JPEG file is saved as PSD, PSP or XCF depending on your software. Now you have: / original.jpg – the original compressed JPEG file / original.psd (or psp, xcf) – the uncompressed version that is of the exact same quality as the original JPEG file. The difference is: you can open the PSD, PSP or XCF file and resave it without loss of quality, but if you open the JPEG file in an image editor and save it (JPEG as default), then you are compressing the file again. Overtime the file will degrade in quality if resaved as JPEG each time. Next: / PSD, PSP or XCF file is opened and adjusted for tone etc. / Image is cropped to from 4:3 ratio to 3:2 ratio (see section at the end) / Adjusted PSD, PSP or XCF file is ‘saved as’ another copy. Now you have: / original.jpg / original.psd / adjusted.psd Call the adjusted file something like: imagename 2 or imagename final. Next: / Adjusted PSD, PSP or XCF file is ‘saved as’ JPEG. If you want to upload your image it must be in the JPEG format so ‘save as’ again but this time change the file format to JPEG and choose the least amount of compression (highest quality) setting and choose either Baseline (Standard) or Baseline Optimized (optimized colour and slightly smaller file size) for the Format option. / You can name the file whatever you like at this point such as the title of the image but just make sure you can track back to the original JPEG and the PSD, PSP, or XCF files if you need to alter anything later. / I suggest renaming the original JPEG and the first PSD, PSP or XCF file to match the final title of the ‘upload’ JPEG, name the original JPEG from the start, or keep a Notepad or similar type file with a list of the Red Bubble JPEG and their corresponding files with names and locations on your computer. Now you have: / original.jpg / original.psd / adjusted.psd / adjusted.jpg You are ready to upload the adjusted.jpg to Red Bubble to be made into products. Aspect Ratios / As mentioned before, most compact cameras record their images in the 4:3 ratio but photo prints at a photolab or on Red Bubble are printed at the 3:2 ratio. / Something’s gotta give. Part of the 4:3 image must be removed by cropping (setting a dimension selection on an image and discarding anything outside this; like a biscuit (cookie) cutter and dough. This example uses Photoshop but should be similar in other image editors. See parentheses for generic terms. Marquee Tool (Selection tool) / - Style: Fixed Aspect Ratio / Enter height and width of 3 and 2. Transpose these numbers depending on portrait or landscape format. Now you have a selection tool that will default to a 3:2 ratio. Click and drag from outside of the image area (increase the document window if you can’t see any space surround the image area). E.g. click and drag from the right bottom corner outside of the image area until the selection (dashed lined box) won’t go any further. Now you have a 3:2 ratio selection at the maximum size for this image. As we will have to crop the image we want to lose the least amount of the image as possible. Your selection should be at the bottom of the image with a strip of image outside the selection across the top. If you crop the image now, that strip outside of the selection will be removed and you will have converted a 4:3 ratio image to a 3:2 image. But what if the best part of the image is at the top in that strip outside the selection? We have to move the selection. Using the keyboard: / the arrow keys will ‘nudge’ the selection at small increments but if you hold down the Shift key and use the arrows and the same time, the nudge will be in bigger increments. You can then release Shift and use just the arrows to be more precise.   As I struggled to navigate through this site initially, a month or so ago, I was fortunate that several Bubblers were kind enough to share how they uploaded artwork to their profiles and art pages; links to music and videos and some other helpful tidbits which I recently shared with a few friends invited here… Hope this helps you present your amazing work easier, if you didn’t already know how… Clickable Link: / 1. Quotation mark / 2. What you want your link to say / 3. Quotation mark / 4. Colon / 5. URL code – http://www.etc…com Add Images: / 1. Upload Image, Title, Description, Tags, Groups & Items for sale – SAVE / 2. Click onto buy/preview and save to favorites the card, print and/or framed print, by right clicking image of card or print; then go back to artwork page / 3. In description box, add !exclamation point, then click to another browser tab / 4. Find image saved in favorites and click to highlight URL, Cut (ControlC), click back to browser tab with artwork / 5. Paste URL into description box and add !exclamation point / 6. Challenges: RB just made most of the challenges really very easy as the group will send notice in your overview feed, click onto enter now and all the work you have uploaded will show up to chose from for entering; note whether they require a TAG, you may need to edit before entering. They have not yet mastered entering “writing” works, most groups do it in forums. Groups: join the ones you feel you can get the most exposure and follow their specific rules, you can click onto anyone in your watchlists’ list of groups to seek commonalities. Or, while looking at artwork posted by others, on the right side where the description is – below are underlined groups that have accepted the artwork and you can click those to learn more. Watchlist: Add people you feel share the same tastes in artwork for support – by clicking on names of commenters, bubblemailers or checking my watchlist and reading profiles, seeing artwork & groups in common. Bubblesite/Gallery: this URL is different than your Profile page it would be http://yourname.redbubble.com – you can click this tab on your page to build and manage it as you add artwork – I suggest you get used to some of the above, so you have optimum pricing and exposure for items for sale. The templates are easy and to manage, you click and drag your artwork into categories you chose. Customers can buy directly from your gallery, without being redbubble members, or you can simply share the URL with friends to see your photos. Written works are not included in the gallery, but all photos uploaded for sale will automatically be in the Manage section to be added to the categories you move them to, I manage my gallery once weekly. Text Formatting: / BOLD to make text bold =bold / Italic to make text italic =italic / Underline to underline text =underlined / Small Text make text smaller =smaller text Comments: when someone comments on your work, you can reply (click) and they will receive a feed that you responded – if they are rude (click report) or delete – when you just comment below you will be the only one who knows.   I often get asked how I compile my home page so that linked images of my work appear, and so I will create this journal entry, as I see folks may be a little shy to come up and ask and may spend far too much time trying to figure it out themselves. It is not so hard!!! / I have created a pdf page and link to it below, because if I write the directions here it doesn’t work as the script just goes live, and you lose the information you need to understand the process.
