I was going to leave ‘Seasons’ open to your own interpretation, but painting this pic brought back memories of ‘The Seekers’ singing ‘There is a Season….turn, turn, turn…’. If you look closely, you can see the handwritten bible verse in tiny writing around the heads of the three :D Instead of leaving it open for interpretation, as I’m submitting this to The Healing Journey forum for a music/art competition, I will try to explain what the image depicts. This is my family and I am the hands, although the hands also represent God. The boat is a metaphor for our journey through life, and the waters are somewhat turbulent beneath, my family is being supported by myself at great cost sometimes to me personally and God is also supporting…if you like, imagine it is God’s hands super-imposed over my hands, so that I have strength to do what I am called to do, imparting a protective and nurturing boundary around my beautiful family…..making home a sanctuary, and a safe place, it is a labour of love and the weight of carrying and nurturing can be extremely heavy sometimes, but also very rewarding. There is my daughter, my son, and my husband in the boat…and the symbol of the greek cross on the vessel indicates that my family belong to Christ, and we will be Conquerors in this life and in the next, as we pass through all of life’s testing and difficulty, we will be made stronger and have our characters’ hewn and shaped, and wisdom will come as a result. Bonded together through adversity, trial, separation and togetherness, we will learn how to work together as a team to achieve harmony, joy and satisfaction…we will support one another when life’s journey becomes all too hard and we want to give up…then there will be one of us to support the one who is down….and this will be reciprocated later when the other is down….. instead of destroying one another, we will build each other up, and make each other stronger for the fight, for the journey….we will encourage one another all the more when we are failing and losing sight of our goals….we will not give up on one another…and even if the world is not interested in us, we will be interested in one another, and remember one another in prayer and thought and spirit and heart. We will cheer one another one to be courageous and to persevere, no matter life’s challenges. And through each of the seasons of life, birth, death, life, healing, laughing, dancing, moving, scattering, gathering, giving up, giving voice, mending, loving, hating, mourning…..we will stick together and support one another. The symbol is The Greek Cross which is complemented with the first and last letters of the Greek name for Jesus (IC), the first and last letters of the Greek word for Christ (XC) and the Greek word for Conqueror (NIKA). I was watching the movie “The Ultimate Gift” listening to the character played by James Garner talking to his grandson when he said… ‘Learning is a gift… even if pain is your teacher”. As soon as the words had finished coming out of his mouth I honestly said out loud – YES!! Immediately I was blown away by the quote and I wrote it down and thought about its meaning for weeks. I’ve never felt so affected by a sentence before. Upon reflecting this quote I found quite confronting to realise that I spent my twenties doing everything to avoid and “run away” from my emotional pain.. Now in my 30s I’ve realised that pain was essential for me to be a more caring, less-judgemental and forgiving person. Pain seems to show us the truth in others… the truth that all people, no matter what’s on the outside… have a heart capable of breaking on the inside. Running my own business continuing to be challenging? Check. Darren Stones steering the good ship RB around icebergs with a confident if not somewhat alcohol induced flourish? Check. Some people on some distant journal thread arguing about freedom of speech as if RB is the most vital instrument for world peace on earth. Whilst slandering, vilifying and taunting each other with racial, overworked cliches from behind psuedo names? Check. So nothing new or unusual about today then? Un check. What the… Check this… Today in seperate orders people have bought… 1 canvas print of shoe woman plus 20 cards of shoe woman 150 cards of mother & child 25 cards of Possibility II 25 cards of the congo skipping kids & a further 26 of these 20 cards of this beauty 5 cards of these guys 5 cards of these little ones 2 cards of this chap 2 cards of this dude 2 cards of this princess 5 cards of this piece of possibility and 2 cards of this beautiful, precious boy I don’t know anything much about freedom of speech, flags, philosophy or anything like the stuff that’s been going on here this week. They live in slums, gutters and sheds made of flattened alluminium cans. The love, they laugh, they dream – they dodge bullets, they run as fast as they can from rapists usually unsuccessfully, they starve and they cry. Every cent of revenue goes to them and the brave souls who live in a war zone to help them. They couldn’t give a rats about flags, and virtual slanging matches. They live on the real edge. I didn’t cry once in Africa. Right now I am sitting here drowning in tears. Maybe change is possible? Even the tiniest bit?? Thanks RB – thanks whoever. Folks.. this was taken while leaving the harbor of Vigo , North of Spain on May 12.. towards the Gulf of Biscay >> France ..destination Le Havre . When I was teaching high school English, Emily Dickinson’s poem about HOPE was one of my all-time favorites. The great American poet compares hope to a little bird that never stops singing, even during the most turbulent storms, yet demands nothing from the one it encourages. In the present day when despair and doubts abound, this little poem from the past makes a welcome comeback. I took the photo of the Carolina wren as it perched jauntily on a branch near my patio. I love the wren because, in spite of its small size, it has a mighty song. I think it’s a fitting image to couple with Emily Dickinson’s poem. May the picture and the poetry bring hope your way! (The photo is also available without the poem. Just let me know if you’d like that instead.)

This profound quotation is commonly called St. Teresa’s Bookmark as it was found tucked into one of the great saint’s books. St. Teresa of Avila was a Carmelite nun who lived in Spain and was a great mystic and prolific spiritual writer. I created this image today for three people: for Barbara and Jerry, my mother’s neighbors who lost their home in a fire yesterday. All of their worldly possessions were destroyed in about thirty minutes. Barbara ran out of the house with her purse, her robe and house slippers, and the cup of coffee she was holding when smoke billowed everywhere. The other person I created this for is a friend, Brenda, who emailed me to say she was feeling low and needed a word of encouragement. I thought that these three people who are deeply troubled would be comforted by these words of enduring wisdom and truth. Maybe someone else needs to hear them, too. God help us all to remember that he alone suffices and he alone is unchanging and dependable.
