You remember UK art festival that I’ve been trying to arrange? Well, here are some updates and questions. I have had several meetings with our sponsors in the past 2 months and we’ve been working out a plan. As it turns out, Victoria Square in Birmingham is extremely difficult to book and they were giving us too much trouble. So… what’s the plan? Well, if any of you have heard of art streets like Brick Lane, London, you’ll know what I am talking about. We’re working closely with the Custard Factory on their very expensive project to bring art culture to the West Midlands. So, here’s what we’re proposing. We will be arranging an art fair every Sunday where people can come and hang out, buy art, enjoy great company, food, alcohol, performances, etc etc. We will be working on a contract basis with the artists, and let them book stalls for a little longer than one off. Let’s say, if we work out a package for 8 weeks, it’d work out MUCH CHEAPER to hire a stall than on a one-off term. The great thing about this is that it will be very well advertised so you’ll be making lots. This plan is starting in a back street of Birmingham city centre, the footfall will gradually increase as we advertise nationally through various media. I have a list of those people that were initially interested in this on my website So, are any of you interested in getting a stall for a few weeks? Some of you might even want to think about permanent stalls. The prices will vary depending on the period of your contract. Prices? We haven’t worked them out yet but they’ll be MUCH cheaper than what I initially worked out. They’ll be very affordable, even for students. A lot of us are ‘starving artists’ so this is a great opportunity to get ourselves out there and recognised, and not to mention the cash coming in. I will be talking to the RedBubble staff about sponsoring the artists as well, so let’s see how that one goes. I’ll keep you posted.

Greetings! It’s the start of a new month and I’ve just spent a few minutes looking at all the stats from last month and thought you might be interested in a quick snapshot. We’re a chatty bunch – last month there were 627933 comments on the site. We continue to receive feedback that the positive and supportive environment at RedBubble (often expressed via comments) is one of the most valuable aspects of the site. Here’s a graph of comments since launch: To put this into context there were 144690 works added to the site in February. Groups have steadily been building momentum: We have grand plans for the groups (after we get through our current roadmap) but it pleasing to see more activity happening in the groups. The sales on the site have well and truly picked up after the post Christmas lull. RedBubble is much more than a place to sell your work – in fact we think the most important thing we think we do is facilitate the evolution of a supportive, safe and encouraging environment where your talents can be shared and you can be encouraged and inspired to delve more deeply into your creative side … but I digress (for those who want to know more about what drives us try here or here). Here’s a graph of the number of unique works sold each day on RB: . In February we sent out 2204 sales notifications. If we consider a seller as someone who was sold something before on RedBubble (there’s some folks on RB who are just interested in sharing their work) then the average sales are at $150 per year (per seller). There’s no one yet making a full time living on RB but there are quire a few folks making 1/3 to 1/2 a living – and it’s not always the people you would expect. Some of the most prolific sellers have quite a low profile on RB – and they do a lot of work off site marketing themselves. As a general note – we’re a very entrepreneurial company – if you’ve ever got a business idea that you think we can help with drop us a line. In the last week we’ve had about half a dozen companies approach us wanting to distribute some of the t-shirts on the site (for example). That’s probably enough for today … in the next couple of days I’ll be calling for volunteers to help us road test a few new products we’ve got in the pipe line. So if you’re interested please keep checking out these RB journal entries. Ciao, Peter

Almost every day I see people asking “how do I put pictures in my profile”. There are quite a number of tutorials on how to do this, and here is yet another. This one explains how to use the image from your “preview/buy” page in your profile, and also gives an explanation for creating a profile with smaller images, like the one below. The tutorial is written in a pdf format (for windows PC users – sorry mac people, I wish I could put the instructions in for you) and includes full link texts (difficult to put into a journal on Redbubble because the code you need to type in converts to images unless you leave spaces) and some screencaptures to help along the way. Have you ever wondered how people add samples of stuff like this? !http://images-3.redbubble.net/img/art/border:blackwithdetail/produc…
Have you ever wondered how people add samples of stuff like this? Want to do the same? Good! How well you present your work is a measure of the pride it holds for you and is a key driver of sales and the appreciation and interest of others. Due to popular demand, the aim of this Guide is to show how easy it is to insert artwork into a Comment, a Description, and even a Journal. Anywhere on RB you can write stuff, basically, you can include a pretty pitcha. I have written this guide in plain language, not IT guru nerds language. If you already know how to do this, please leave now. First, some key points: You can only show samples of artwork which have been already uploaded onto RB. You do not have to publicly show any artwork just to get a sample of it. You can remove an artwork from RB and this will not affect any sample of it you have already posted on RB elsewhere. When I say below do not leave a space between typed characters I really do mean do not leave a space. This is because you will be typing an instruction to the computer to go and grab the image and insert it in a specific spot and the computer can’t read spaces like we can. Ever noticed those Group Bubblemails with all that funny writing, like http: and .jpg! ? Those are examples of attempts to show samples done wrong. Usually it’s because they left a space! The point is: always check before you click Save or Reply and especially afterwards! (Memo to self: remember to check this posting!) Finally, this guide may seem long, but as Morgan Freeman said in Deep Impact, “It only seems that way.” Once you get the hang of it, creating samples will take mere seconds. Righto, here we go … mouses at the ready? Step One Upload the image you want to show a sample of, if you have not already done so. If the image you want to make a sample of is already on RB, go to Step Two but make sure the image is available for sale. If it isn’t, go into Edit and follow this step. When you upload the image (or Edit the upload), make sure you select Make this work available for purchase as a … and tick all the boxes. It doesn’t really matter if the image is too small for a poster. Just tick ‘em all and find out. As long as the image is at least big enough for a card, you can create a sample of the artwork in a card form. If the image is too small even for a card you cannot create a sample and you will have to go back and increase the size of the image and try again (hmmm, could be another tutorial there). Note: If you are uploading an image for the sole purpose of showing a sample of it, do not bother writing a Description or ticking any of the Group boxes, and make sure you tick Hide this work from others. Step Two Go to the Public view page for the artwork you wish to create a sample of. Pretend you are buying the artwork. Click the buy/preview icon to the right of the image because you will be creating your sample from one of the displayed examples of each purchase option. Step Three Decide which of the product options you want to use as a sample. Try a few different ones to see which is the one which really shows off the work. If the image size only allows for Small of anything, your best option usually is to choose a laminated print over a framed print because the actual visual size of the artwork in the framed print is generally too small. Step Four Once you’ve decided upon the type and specifications for the sample, Right Click once while holding the mouse over the image. A list of options should have appeared. At the very bottom of this list is the word Properties. Move the mouse over Properties and Left Click once. A new window should have opened. Halfway down the list of properties you will see Address: with the acronym URL immediately under it. This is the place on the RB big computer (server) where the pitcha of your sample product is stored – it’s address. (OK, all you tech heads are now cringing at my howler, but it’s ok, okaay :)) You need to copy the address and paste it (Step Five) in the exact place you want it to be shown. To copy the URL, hold the mouse over the start of the address, just to the left of the term http. When I say “just to the left” I mean right up against the “h” of http. The mouse needs to change from an arrow to a symbol which looks like a capital i in traditional font (Times New Roman). When that happens and with the mouse still right on that “h”, press and hold the Left mouse button and then, while still holding down the left mouse button, move the mouse straight down vertically. The address should now be highlighted. Keep moving down until the end of the address is within the highlighted area. The end of the address is always .jpg and you will always need to scroll down one line before you reach it. Now let go of the left mouse button, leaving the address highlighted. Keeping the mouse over the highlighted area, Right click once. Two options will appear. Select Copy (left mouse button). Now click on the Cancel icon at the bottom of the Properties window. This is just to close it. Step Five – Wallah! Now go back to where you want to show the sample. Let’s assume you are making a comment on a brilliant piece of artwork and you wanted to show a sample of it framed or laminated as part of your comment (the artist will love you for it!) All you need to do is Paste the address of the sample where in your comment you want the sample to appear, eg at the end. To do this, firstly Left click on that space so that the cursor is blinking. Now Right click once and select Paste. The address you copied in Step Four should now appear as part of your comment. (But it isn’t really). It must start with http and it must end with .jpg. If it doesn’t you need to delete what you just pasted and go back and re-copy the address and re-paste it. You are allowed to swear while doing so. Step Six – Really Important Before you hit the Reply button, you need to add the symbol that tells the computer to go get the pitcha. You must type this symbol once at the start of the address and once at the end of the address without leaving a space between the typed characters. The symbol is the exclamation mark. So, make sure the start of the address looks like this – !http – and the end of the address looks like this – .jpg! Now you can hit the Reply button. Step Seven – Really Really Important Check to make sure the linking worked. The address should have been replaced by the pitcha. But wait…there’s more You can create a sample of an image in its own Description in exactly the same way as I have described above. I normally do this by uploading the artwork, making it available to purchase as … whatever, but hiding it from public view. Then I simply go into the buy/preview page, grab the address of the sample, then paste it into the Description while still in Edit mode, then click on *Allow anyone to view this work before saving. Hope this guide answers a few questions for you! If so, you might like to also check out my guides to creating clickable images and creating links Any problems feel free to either bmail me or email me at peter_h111@msn.com. If you already know how to do all the above, please don’t feel the need to leave a comment, thanks. :)

Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know that I have fixed some bugs and updated my RB utilities. Here is the summary: RB Utility – Top Tens (displays your wins and top-ten placements) / Now displays WINs as well as Top Tens. Also there are two cut & paste options for journals (full description) and for your profile (just the icon), both with “hover text” that shows when the cursor is placed over the picture. RB Utility – All Challenges & Entries (shows what groups are running challenges and what you have entered) / Now handles descriptions with single quote marks correctly, has correct links for the artwork, shows the correct time left for the challenge and now gives the option on the login screen, for choosing to see only Open or Voting challenges (default is both) RB Utility – Which groups is my art in (shows all of your artwork with a list of which groups each has been accepted in) / No updates yet, but expect a major re-vamp soon, to speed it up, as well as a sibling utility for showing the same information but sorted by group (i.e. by group, which art pieces you have submitted to that group) – watch this space… RB Utility – My Features (cut & paste links to your latest features) / Although this information is readily available in RB, this utility provides the feature descriptions in RB format, ready for cut & pasting into journals and profiles (similar to the output of the “Top Tens” above) RB Utility – All My Work (A “wall” with all your work on one page) / New utility that gives you a thumbnail wall of all your work on one page. Clicking on a thumbnail will take you to the editing page for that work. Invaluable if you have over 100 photos and can’t remember what page they are on! I hope you find these useful and enjoy using them. I have written these for my own use, and I have become entirely dependent on them. If you have other ideas for improvements or other utilities that you think would be useful, drop me a line! Regards / George (29 March 2009)
To vote for him go here http://www.redbubble.com/groups/redbubble/challenges/2304-sound Everybodies favourite badass villain, shredding licks on his guitar. This is my first real digital artwork that didn’t take less than half an hour to make. In total i probably spent about 10 hours on this tedious beast. But i am quite proud of it :). The idea came to me when trying to think of a spin on ‘sound’ for the sound competition that didn’t use anything like a speaker or a musical note or something obvious like that. And for anyone who doesn’t know who shredder is, or what ‘shredding’ on a guitar is: / Shredder is the villain from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (at least the one i watched as a kid he was) / and / Shredding (on guitar): is when a guitarist performs a guitar solo really really fast and it sounds extremely awesome.

So this week we’ve been thinking about groups. The way I like to update the site is to think, dabble a bit, then pull back and think again. We’ve done some early thinking and dabbling about a new group overview page and now it’s time to pull back to test our thinking – and I’d like your feedback. Here’s my thinking. The groups page should be designed for the members of RedBubble – for people who are active contributors to the site. The aim of a group is to create a space for a smaller collection of people united by a common interest to hang out and share their interest. To do this a group should have a forum; a way for hosts to communicate and when navigating work in a group you should stay in the group context. I also think we should equip groups with more promotional tools – I can see some groups wanting to coordinate a sales effort so I’m partial to the idea of a group BubbleSite (as an example). I think the group overview page should: / - Be visually attractive; / - Highlight the work in the group; / - Show important group messages (i.e. group news); / - Highlight activity in the group / - Make it easy to find the recent activity in a group; And here you can our early dabbling (not tested in IE). So a few questions: What’s important to you with groups? / What’s missing the most right now? / How do you use groups and how would you like to use them? Cheers, Peter

Hello, The new MyBubble overview page has been up for a week and we’ve received lots of feedback – both positive and negative. Thanks for this feedback, we do listen and try to make sense of it all (although it’s not always easy – often as many people say they love something as say they hate something). We’ve released a few updates today: 1) When you load multiple pages and click on a link then click back the new MyBubble will remember where you were (previously it would take you back to the top of the screen). 2) Group News now appears as a forum thread in each group – so that people can respond to each news item. This change was in response to a concern from some group hosts that the new group news isn’t receiving as much attention as the old group BubbleMail. As I wrote last week We think it’s vitally important that hosts have the ability to communicate effectively with the members of their group(s) – so we’ll be watching this change closely to ensure that this channel of communicate remains open. I don’t think we’ve finished with group news so over the next week will be making more changes to make group news more prominent. For example, our current thinking is that there would be a little indicator beside “My Groups” to indicate that you have new new group news. 3) We’ve updated the activity events on the MyBubble page so that after you’ve looked at an item the link becomes grey and there’s a little ‘tick’ beside the link (just to make it easier to keep track of what you’ve already seen). See below: 4) We’ve reintroduced the feed ‘group moderation of my work’ We’re still digesting more of the feedback – so there will be additional changes over the next week or two. However, in saying this we can’t be all things to all people so we’re not going to be able to do everything that people have asked for – and in some instances we disagree with the feedback. On another note there has been some concern expressed in the community about ‘tag spamming’. Tag spamming is where someone puts a tag on their work that doesn’t relate to their work – in the hope of getting more traffic. For example, someone might display an image of a ship but tag it ‘plane’ – the tag has no relevance to the subject. This becomes a particular problem when lots and lots of tags are added to a work. In order to combat this I’d like to ask that everyone makes an effort to keep the tags relevant to the work uploaded. Over the next next few weeks we’ll be implementing some new features to try to automatically adjust our search algorithm to account for ‘tag spamming’ so it’s likely that if your tags don’t relate to the image then it will have a negative outcome in any searches on RedBubble. And to finish with today it’s been interesting to see how much more activity is happening across the site in forums since last week (now that we’ve got the ability to watch a topic). I’ve been able to keep in touch with some brilliant topics – including my current favourite Images that make you go ‘wow’. Ciao, Peter

Ahoy there – Some of you might remember a few mock-ups that were posted a while back of MyBubble and the Groups updates which included a new site-wide navigation on them. Well, we’re going to be releasing this navigation this week, so we thought we’d give you a bit of a preview so you don’t fall off your chairs when it happens, explain a few of the changes and ask for a bit of feedback. While this might feel like it, it’s not a “new RedBubble” or a “complete makeover” – we’re just tweaking things to help us help you a bit better. So here it is: There’s probably 3 main reasons we’re changing the nav. The first is for consistency among all of our nav – we realised that we’ve had you dancing all over the page to get to different things, so we’re connecting as much of the nav as we can into one spot that stays put! The next obvious change is we’ve moved away from image-based menus which means the nav loads faster and the whole nav can scale with the browser text-size setting, which helps out our accessibility friends. Lastly, we needed to change the way the nav worked behind the scenes so that moving forward, we could implement some of the great ideas we’ve got for updating the site, but faster. All this means that we’re spending less time working around older styles and more time making stuff for you guys! (which really is a good thing right?) Gone are the gradient buttons and the odd little drop-shadow guy that was hanging off the left of the menu, but along for the ride has come a fancy new giant “_you really will notice it_” BubbleMail indicator. Unfortunately, IE users won’t be seeing things quite as funky as everyone else – but we’ll push out some IE fixes as soon as we can to get it a little closer. Needless to say, you can still use everything in IE, just with a few less curves and you could always grab Firefox , Safari or Chrome and then you’ll get the full-curvy-goodness straight away. Because of the site nav changes, we’ve had to go through every page of the site and tweak everything to match and fit as some of the pages were relying on the old navigational styles for odd things. We’re getting rid of the gradient-grey background that has been site-wide, and replacing it with a full-white background that’s going to make your images pop a lot more, as well as freshening the place up a bit. The question we have for you is, what do you like, a full-white page, or something with a white background, but framed in a grey. Don’t get mixed up, we’re not talking about a fluid, expanding page here, just whether you’re more interested in a plain white background, or something like a rectangle of white within a light grey. This isn’t a vote or anything as fancy as that, we’re just after a gauge of what you guys are expecting. As a bonus, while fixing the forums you’ve scored a bit of extra width for reading and writing: There’s a few other little things that have changed like the size of text boxes on the Add Writing + Journal screens, the groups + forum search boxes are a little more obvious, we’re limiting the width of images in journals, comments and descriptions, the default site font is standard across all platforms now (sorry Lucida Grande lovers) and a whole bunch more. Like I said, we’re doing this so that other updates are easier on us and faster to you, and if you find a page that we’ve missed that’s gone crazy with its layout, just let us know and we’ll sort it out – but hopefully overall you’ll like what’s getting released. Cheers guys – Russ ps. For those of you keeping score, worry not, we’re still busy fixing up the Group News parts of MyBubble too. We really wanted it to release this week, and while we are putting a Group News feed in your activity feeds, we’ve got a few final tweaks before we get the Group stuff in MyBubble 100% right, so here’s a little preview of where we’re going with it just to keep you up to date:

Today I went to the BLM wild horse and burro center to see the Onaqui herd. I saw a lot of horses I recognized in the wild, they rounded up a total of about 200 horses. This includes the General, the paints, the roans, Praire Roses greys, and my favorite Marv. The BLM has informed me out of the 200 horses only 25 will be returned. All the females will have a two year contaceptive shot and the BLM assured me that in three years there will be 200 horses out there again. The BLM informed me that the horses that they could not capture during the roundup have been scattered approximately within 100 square miles and it will take them 3 months for them to band together again. They also informed me that the amount of horses in this horse management area which consists of 48,000 acres is only 200 horses. I talked with three different BLM officials and could not a consistent answer of why they were rounded up. They told me the horses that don’t get adopted will be shipped to Oklahoma to live their lives in a beautiful green pasture with flowing rivers. He told me with conviction that a healthy horse in never euthanized. He told me that this is totally against there policy. A policy I am still looking to find! I have taken the time to sign many petitions, contact the local news and sent a letter to the white house and governers. Please take the time to do the same!
