The aim of this Guide is to provide easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions to achieving the Orton Effect without the necessity of being a Photoshop guru. I still call myself “new to Photoshop” and I have found a lot of tutorials on this topic assume a much higher level of knowledge than I have and are not very intuitive. I have revised the Tutorial to show a shortcut to the 2 Blending Option steps, which I only found myself after posting the original tutorial (doh), but I have left the long way as well, as you may wish to play around with the default settings applied by the short way. To achieve the Orton Effect you will be creating Layers, but don’t worry if you haven’t done this before. I hadn’t. The method I am about to describe is the simplest I have found. It’s not my method, but the description is all mine. When I have more time (yeh, right) I will revise this tutorial to include screenshots of the various steps. But for now, you might like to print this Guide and have it next to you while you create your first Orton Effect. I use Photoshop CS2 v9. The method described below originally came from someone using Photoshop Elements, so you can see this is not advanced stuff. The steps described below assume almost zero knowledge of Layering, and ignore other adjustments you might be making to the image, for example Sharpening the image before you start work on it (recommended). Step 1 Choose your image. Any image will do, you are just learning at this stage, but if you have that favourite flower shot or portrait – cool. Step 2 Open Photoshop. Open the image you have selected to be your first amazing Orton Effect image. Feel the excitement. This is your Background Layer. Step 3 Look for the Layer toolbox on the right hand side of the Photoshop work area. There should be a rectangular box with a small eye icon, a tiny thumbnail version of your image, and the word Background in italics. Right-click the word Background and select Duplicate Layer. A small box should immediately appear in the middle of your screen. It is asking you to Name the Duplicate Layer. Name this Layer Focus and click Enter. (Note: It doesn’t really matter what you name it, but Focus will do for our current purpose.) Step 4 There should now be a new rectangular box immediately above the original, and called Focus. (If there isn’t, stop, curse quietly, then try Step 3 again.) Pause now and look at the tiny eye icon. You will see that it is now the Focus layer on your screen, so this is the “copy” you are working on. OK, moving on ….. Right-click the Focus rectangular box and select Duplicate Layer again. This time when the naming box appears just click Enter because we will use the default name for this Layer, being Focus copy. Step 5 OK, now we are going to blend the Focus copy. There are 2 ways to do this – the long way and the short way. I will show you the long way first, just in case you want to go back and play with it after you get familiar with the process. Long way – Right-click the Focus copy rectangular box and select Blending Options. This will open a new box with lots of options. Ignore them for now. In the top part of this box you will find a window showing the Blending Mode and the default setting of Normal with a pull-down menu (A downwards arrow). Open the menu (left-click) and select Screen. Click Enter to close the box. OR Short way – look at the window which shows your layers. See the drop down menu at the top left, showing Normal as the default? Scroll down the menu and select Screen. The Focus copy layer should now have a bit of a washed-out look to it as a result of selecting Screen as the Blending Mode. (I have found that if the Screen effect still leaves a fairly good image, the Orton Effect will be enhanced. Too washed out and the Effect is diminished.) Step 6 Right-click the Focus copy rectangular box again, only this time select Merge Down (it’s near the bottom of the menu). This will collapse the Focus copy layer onto the Focus layer. Step 7 Right-click the Focus rectangular box again and select Duplicate Layer again. Name this copy Blur. Click Enter to close the box. Step 8 Now, find and open the Filter menu on the Tool bar running across the top of your screen. Select Blur. Another menu should open. Select Gaussian Blur (don’t ask). A new window should open. You will see a Preview of the image with a default blur Radius setting of 15.9. You can play around with the radius later. For now, just click OK to close the window as we will accept the 15.9 (I have found 15.9 to be right for most images anyway). The blur you are to achieve with this step should be enough to discern the shapes without the detail. Step 9 – The Magic Happens! This is the fun part. We now make one more blending option. Again, here’s the long way and the short way. Long way – Right-click the Blur rectangular box and select Blending Options. As described in Step 5, this will open a new box with lots of options. Again, ignore them for now. In the top part of this box you will find a window showing the Blending Mode and the default setting of Normal with a pull-down menu (A downwards arrow). Open the menu (left-click) again and this time select Multiply. Click Enter to close the box. OR Short way – Click on the same drop down menu you used to create the Screen effect, only this time select Multiply. You should now be able to see the Orton Effect! Step 10 If you want to accept the result, right-click the Blur rectangular box one more time and this time select Flatten Image (it’s the last option on the menu). This basically collapses all the layers into one final image and is the last thing you do in Layering. You can now save the image as normal. Does it look something like this? If it looks too dark though, you can adjust the Opacity level with the sliding bar before flattening the image. Look for the tiny Opacity tool in the top right of the Layering toolbox. But if you find you need to go below 90% the Effect is significantly lost and maybe it wasn’t the right image. Another option is to adjust the Fill and leave the Opacity at 100%. Have fun! I am. Almost every day I see people asking “how do I put pictures in my profile”. There are quite a number of tutorials on how to do this, and here is yet another. This one explains how to use the image from your “preview/buy” page in your profile, and also gives an explanation for creating a profile with smaller images, like the one below. The tutorial is written in a pdf format (for windows PC users – sorry mac people, I wish I could put the instructions in for you) and includes full link texts (difficult to put into a journal on Redbubble because the code you need to type in converts to images unless you leave spaces) and some screencaptures to help along the way. Hello, The new MyBubble overview page has been up for a week and we’ve received lots of feedback – both positive and negative. Thanks for this feedback, we do listen and try to make sense of it all (although it’s not always easy – often as many people say they love something as say they hate something). We’ve released a few updates today: 1) When you load multiple pages and click on a link then click back the new MyBubble will remember where you were (previously it would take you back to the top of the screen). 2) Group News now appears as a forum thread in each group – so that people can respond to each news item. This change was in response to a concern from some group hosts that the new group news isn’t receiving as much attention as the old group BubbleMail. As I wrote last week We think it’s vitally important that hosts have the ability to communicate effectively with the members of their group(s) – so we’ll be watching this change closely to ensure that this channel of communicate remains open. I don’t think we’ve finished with group news so over the next week will be making more changes to make group news more prominent. For example, our current thinking is that there would be a little indicator beside “My Groups” to indicate that you have new new group news. 3) We’ve updated the activity events on the MyBubble page so that after you’ve looked at an item the link becomes grey and there’s a little ‘tick’ beside the link (just to make it easier to keep track of what you’ve already seen). See below: 4) We’ve reintroduced the feed ‘group moderation of my work’ We’re still digesting more of the feedback – so there will be additional changes over the next week or two. However, in saying this we can’t be all things to all people so we’re not going to be able to do everything that people have asked for – and in some instances we disagree with the feedback. On another note there has been some concern expressed in the community about ‘tag spamming’. Tag spamming is where someone puts a tag on their work that doesn’t relate to their work – in the hope of getting more traffic. For example, someone might display an image of a ship but tag it ‘plane’ – the tag has no relevance to the subject. This becomes a particular problem when lots and lots of tags are added to a work. In order to combat this I’d like to ask that everyone makes an effort to keep the tags relevant to the work uploaded. Over the next next few weeks we’ll be implementing some new features to try to automatically adjust our search algorithm to account for ‘tag spamming’ so it’s likely that if your tags don’t relate to the image then it will have a negative outcome in any searches on RedBubble. And to finish with today it’s been interesting to see how much more activity is happening across the site in forums since last week (now that we’ve got the ability to watch a topic). I’ve been able to keep in touch with some brilliant topics – including my current favourite Images that make you go ‘wow’. Ciao, Peter

Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know that I have fixed some bugs and updated my RB utilities. Here is the summary: RB Utility – Top Tens (displays your wins and top-ten placements) / Now displays WINs as well as Top Tens. Also there are two cut & paste options for journals (full description) and for your profile (just the icon), both with “hover text” that shows when the cursor is placed over the picture. RB Utility – All Challenges & Entries (shows what groups are running challenges and what you have entered) / Now handles descriptions with single quote marks correctly, has correct links for the artwork, shows the correct time left for the challenge and now gives the option on the login screen, for choosing to see only Open or Voting challenges (default is both) RB Utility – Which groups is my art in (shows all of your artwork with a list of which groups each has been accepted in) / No updates yet, but expect a major re-vamp soon, to speed it up, as well as a sibling utility for showing the same information but sorted by group (i.e. by group, which art pieces you have submitted to that group) – watch this space… RB Utility – My Features (cut & paste links to your latest features) / Although this information is readily available in RB, this utility provides the feature descriptions in RB format, ready for cut & pasting into journals and profiles (similar to the output of the “Top Tens” above) RB Utility – All My Work (A “wall” with all your work on one page) / New utility that gives you a thumbnail wall of all your work on one page. Clicking on a thumbnail will take you to the editing page for that work. Invaluable if you have over 100 photos and can’t remember what page they are on! I hope you find these useful and enjoy using them. I have written these for my own use, and I have become entirely dependent on them. If you have other ideas for improvements or other utilities that you think would be useful, drop me a line! Regards / George (29 March 2009)

Greetings! It’s the start of a new month and I’ve just spent a few minutes looking at all the stats from last month and thought you might be interested in a quick snapshot. We’re a chatty bunch – last month there were 627933 comments on the site. We continue to receive feedback that the positive and supportive environment at RedBubble (often expressed via comments) is one of the most valuable aspects of the site. Here’s a graph of comments since launch: To put this into context there were 144690 works added to the site in February. Groups have steadily been building momentum: We have grand plans for the groups (after we get through our current roadmap) but it pleasing to see more activity happening in the groups. The sales on the site have well and truly picked up after the post Christmas lull. RedBubble is much more than a place to sell your work – in fact we think the most important thing we think we do is facilitate the evolution of a supportive, safe and encouraging environment where your talents can be shared and you can be encouraged and inspired to delve more deeply into your creative side … but I digress (for those who want to know more about what drives us try here or here). Here’s a graph of the number of unique works sold each day on RB: . In February we sent out 2204 sales notifications. If we consider a seller as someone who was sold something before on RedBubble (there’s some folks on RB who are just interested in sharing their work) then the average sales are at $150 per year (per seller). There’s no one yet making a full time living on RB but there are quire a few folks making 1/3 to 1/2 a living – and it’s not always the people you would expect. Some of the most prolific sellers have quite a low profile on RB – and they do a lot of work off site marketing themselves. As a general note – we’re a very entrepreneurial company – if you’ve ever got a business idea that you think we can help with drop us a line. In the last week we’ve had about half a dozen companies approach us wanting to distribute some of the t-shirts on the site (for example). That’s probably enough for today … in the next couple of days I’ll be calling for volunteers to help us road test a few new products we’ve got in the pipe line. So if you’re interested please keep checking out these RB journal entries. Ciao, Peter

Have you ever wondered how people add samples of stuff like this? !http://images-3.redbubble.net/img/art/border:blackwithdetail/produc…
Have you ever wondered how people add samples of stuff like this? Want to do the same? Good! How well you present your work is a measure of the pride it holds for you and is a key driver of sales and the appreciation and interest of others. Due to popular demand, the aim of this Guide is to show how easy it is to insert artwork into a Comment, a Description, and even a Journal. Anywhere on RB you can write stuff, basically, you can include a pretty pitcha. I have written this guide in plain language, not IT guru nerds language. If you already know how to do this, please leave now. First, some key points: You can only show samples of artwork which have been already uploaded onto RB. You do not have to publicly show any artwork just to get a sample of it. You can remove an artwork from RB and this will not affect any sample of it you have already posted on RB elsewhere. When I say below do not leave a space between typed characters I really do mean do not leave a space. This is because you will be typing an instruction to the computer to go and grab the image and insert it in a specific spot and the computer can’t read spaces like we can. Ever noticed those Group Bubblemails with all that funny writing, like http: and .jpg! ? Those are examples of attempts to show samples done wrong. Usually it’s because they left a space! The point is: always check before you click Save or Reply and especially afterwards! (Memo to self: remember to check this posting!) Finally, this guide may seem long, but as Morgan Freeman said in Deep Impact, “It only seems that way.” Once you get the hang of it, creating samples will take mere seconds. Righto, here we go … mouses at the ready? Step One Upload the image you want to show a sample of, if you have not already done so. If the image you want to make a sample of is already on RB, go to Step Two but make sure the image is available for sale. If it isn’t, go into Edit and follow this step. When you upload the image (or Edit the upload), make sure you select Make this work available for purchase as a … and tick all the boxes. It doesn’t really matter if the image is too small for a poster. Just tick ‘em all and find out. As long as the image is at least big enough for a card, you can create a sample of the artwork in a card form. If the image is too small even for a card you cannot create a sample and you will have to go back and increase the size of the image and try again (hmmm, could be another tutorial there). Note: If you are uploading an image for the sole purpose of showing a sample of it, do not bother writing a Description or ticking any of the Group boxes, and make sure you tick Hide this work from others. Step Two Go to the Public view page for the artwork you wish to create a sample of. Pretend you are buying the artwork. Click the buy/preview icon to the right of the image because you will be creating your sample from one of the displayed examples of each purchase option. Step Three Decide which of the product options you want to use as a sample. Try a few different ones to see which is the one which really shows off the work. If the image size only allows for Small of anything, your best option usually is to choose a laminated print over a framed print because the actual visual size of the artwork in the framed print is generally too small. Step Four Once you’ve decided upon the type and specifications for the sample, Right Click once while holding the mouse over the image. A list of options should have appeared. At the very bottom of this list is the word Properties. Move the mouse over Properties and Left Click once. A new window should have opened. Halfway down the list of properties you will see Address: with the acronym URL immediately under it. This is the place on the RB big computer (server) where the pitcha of your sample product is stored – it’s address. (OK, all you tech heads are now cringing at my howler, but it’s ok, okaay :)) You need to copy the address and paste it (Step Five) in the exact place you want it to be shown. To copy the URL, hold the mouse over the start of the address, just to the left of the term http. When I say “just to the left” I mean right up against the “h” of http. The mouse needs to change from an arrow to a symbol which looks like a capital i in traditional font (Times New Roman). When that happens and with the mouse still right on that “h”, press and hold the Left mouse button and then, while still holding down the left mouse button, move the mouse straight down vertically. The address should now be highlighted. Keep moving down until the end of the address is within the highlighted area. The end of the address is always .jpg and you will always need to scroll down one line before you reach it. Now let go of the left mouse button, leaving the address highlighted. Keeping the mouse over the highlighted area, Right click once. Two options will appear. Select Copy (left mouse button). Now click on the Cancel icon at the bottom of the Properties window. This is just to close it. Step Five – Wallah! Now go back to where you want to show the sample. Let’s assume you are making a comment on a brilliant piece of artwork and you wanted to show a sample of it framed or laminated as part of your comment (the artist will love you for it!) All you need to do is Paste the address of the sample where in your comment you want the sample to appear, eg at the end. To do this, firstly Left click on that space so that the cursor is blinking. Now Right click once and select Paste. The address you copied in Step Four should now appear as part of your comment. (But it isn’t really). It must start with http and it must end with .jpg. If it doesn’t you need to delete what you just pasted and go back and re-copy the address and re-paste it. You are allowed to swear while doing so. Step Six – Really Important Before you hit the Reply button, you need to add the symbol that tells the computer to go get the pitcha. You must type this symbol once at the start of the address and once at the end of the address without leaving a space between the typed characters. The symbol is the exclamation mark. So, make sure the start of the address looks like this – !http – and the end of the address looks like this – .jpg! Now you can hit the Reply button. Step Seven – Really Really Important Check to make sure the linking worked. The address should have been replaced by the pitcha. But wait…there’s more You can create a sample of an image in its own Description in exactly the same way as I have described above. I normally do this by uploading the artwork, making it available to purchase as … whatever, but hiding it from public view. Then I simply go into the buy/preview page, grab the address of the sample, then paste it into the Description while still in Edit mode, then click on *Allow anyone to view this work before saving. Hope this guide answers a few questions for you! If so, you might like to also check out my guides to creating clickable images and creating links Any problems feel free to either bmail me or email me at peter_h111@msn.com. If you already know how to do all the above, please don’t feel the need to leave a comment, thanks. :)

Ahoy there – Some of you might remember a few mock-ups that were posted a while back of MyBubble and the Groups updates which included a new site-wide navigation on them. Well, we’re going to be releasing this navigation this week, so we thought we’d give you a bit of a preview so you don’t fall off your chairs when it happens, explain a few of the changes and ask for a bit of feedback. While this might feel like it, it’s not a “new RedBubble” or a “complete makeover” – we’re just tweaking things to help us help you a bit better. So here it is: There’s probably 3 main reasons we’re changing the nav. The first is for consistency among all of our nav – we realised that we’ve had you dancing all over the page to get to different things, so we’re connecting as much of the nav as we can into one spot that stays put! The next obvious change is we’ve moved away from image-based menus which means the nav loads faster and the whole nav can scale with the browser text-size setting, which helps out our accessibility friends. Lastly, we needed to change the way the nav worked behind the scenes so that moving forward, we could implement some of the great ideas we’ve got for updating the site, but faster. All this means that we’re spending less time working around older styles and more time making stuff for you guys! (which really is a good thing right?) Gone are the gradient buttons and the odd little drop-shadow guy that was hanging off the left of the menu, but along for the ride has come a fancy new giant “_you really will notice it_” BubbleMail indicator. Unfortunately, IE users won’t be seeing things quite as funky as everyone else – but we’ll push out some IE fixes as soon as we can to get it a little closer. Needless to say, you can still use everything in IE, just with a few less curves and you could always grab Firefox , Safari or Chrome and then you’ll get the full-curvy-goodness straight away. Because of the site nav changes, we’ve had to go through every page of the site and tweak everything to match and fit as some of the pages were relying on the old navigational styles for odd things. We’re getting rid of the gradient-grey background that has been site-wide, and replacing it with a full-white background that’s going to make your images pop a lot more, as well as freshening the place up a bit. The question we have for you is, what do you like, a full-white page, or something with a white background, but framed in a grey. Don’t get mixed up, we’re not talking about a fluid, expanding page here, just whether you’re more interested in a plain white background, or something like a rectangle of white within a light grey. This isn’t a vote or anything as fancy as that, we’re just after a gauge of what you guys are expecting. As a bonus, while fixing the forums you’ve scored a bit of extra width for reading and writing: There’s a few other little things that have changed like the size of text boxes on the Add Writing + Journal screens, the groups + forum search boxes are a little more obvious, we’re limiting the width of images in journals, comments and descriptions, the default site font is standard across all platforms now (sorry Lucida Grande lovers) and a whole bunch more. Like I said, we’re doing this so that other updates are easier on us and faster to you, and if you find a page that we’ve missed that’s gone crazy with its layout, just let us know and we’ll sort it out – but hopefully overall you’ll like what’s getting released. Cheers guys – Russ ps. For those of you keeping score, worry not, we’re still busy fixing up the Group News parts of MyBubble too. We really wanted it to release this week, and while we are putting a Group News feed in your activity feeds, we’ve got a few final tweaks before we get the Group stuff in MyBubble 100% right, so here’s a little preview of where we’re going with it just to keep you up to date:

So this week we’ve been thinking about groups. The way I like to update the site is to think, dabble a bit, then pull back and think again. We’ve done some early thinking and dabbling about a new group overview page and now it’s time to pull back to test our thinking – and I’d like your feedback. Here’s my thinking. The groups page should be designed for the members of RedBubble – for people who are active contributors to the site. The aim of a group is to create a space for a smaller collection of people united by a common interest to hang out and share their interest. To do this a group should have a forum; a way for hosts to communicate and when navigating work in a group you should stay in the group context. I also think we should equip groups with more promotional tools – I can see some groups wanting to coordinate a sales effort so I’m partial to the idea of a group BubbleSite (as an example). I think the group overview page should: / - Be visually attractive; / - Highlight the work in the group; / - Show important group messages (i.e. group news); / - Highlight activity in the group / - Make it easy to find the recent activity in a group; And here you can our early dabbling (not tested in IE). So a few questions: What’s important to you with groups? / What’s missing the most right now? / How do you use groups and how would you like to use them? Cheers, Peter
You remember UK art festival that I’ve been…
You remember UK art festival that I’ve been trying to arrange? Well, here are some updates and questions. I have had several meetings with our sponsors in the past 2 months and we’ve been working out a plan. As it turns out, Victoria Square in Birmingham is extremely difficult to book and they were giving us too much trouble. So… what’s the plan? Well, if any of you have heard of art streets like Brick Lane, London, you’ll know what I am talking about. We’re working closely with the Custard Factory on their very expensive project to bring art culture to the West Midlands. So, here’s what we’re proposing. We will be arranging an art fair every Sunday where people can come and hang out, buy art, enjoy great company, food, alcohol, performances, etc etc. We will be working on a contract basis with the artists, and let them book stalls for a little longer than one off. Let’s say, if we work out a package for 8 weeks, it’d work out MUCH CHEAPER to hire a stall than on a one-off term. The great thing about this is that it will be very well advertised so you’ll be making lots. This plan is starting in a back street of Birmingham city centre, the footfall will gradually increase as we advertise nationally through various media. I have a list of those people that were initially interested in this on my website So, are any of you interested in getting a stall for a few weeks? Some of you might even want to think about permanent stalls. The prices will vary depending on the period of your contract. Prices? We haven’t worked them out yet but they’ll be MUCH cheaper than what I initially worked out. They’ll be very affordable, even for students. A lot of us are ‘starving artists’ so this is a great opportunity to get ourselves out there and recognised, and not to mention the cash coming in. I will be talking to the RedBubble staff about sponsoring the artists as well, so let’s see how that one goes. I’ll keep you posted.

I see this guy around a lot. He is a happy guy, though, i’m not sure how happy he was having his portrait done. My wife saw him yesterday but didn’t tell me in time, see, I plan on printing this picture and taking it to him – see what he thinks of it… i’d like to know his story. update VERY excited, actually… I was on my way to a shoot I had this afternoon at Cafe Nouveaute @ Habitat in Kings road, London… [good coffee!] ...anyway, was on my way to this shoot and who do I see but “the homeless guy”... I did a double take cause he was sitting in front of a sandwich shop at a table having a sandwich.. same clothes.. I stopped and looked at him, almost pointed, he pointed at me and had a look on his face.. I walked over and said “Hi, I to…” and before I could finish he said “You took my photo”... “I did” I said, “I hope you didn’t mind”... He went on to say that he was actually quite stunned that anyone would want to take his photo and that he was touched. I [very sadly] didn’t have time to stop, I was running late for a client… Anyway, I told him that I really like the shot I took of him and asked if he wanted a copy – he got a bit teary and I got quite choked up…! it was weird and really sweet all at the same time. I plan on carrying a print around with me when wandering about, just incase I see him… ....His name is Bruce If I sell this work in any way shape or form, half of the proceeds will go to Bruce, though, I worry what he will do with the money… well.. we shall see…

Hello hello, We’re a chatty bunch and over time it’s been interesting to see how much correspondence has moved to BubbleMail: There’s almost as many BubbleMails sent as comments made. For something so heavily used, the current implementation of BubbleMail has been bugging us for months. So over the last few weeks Xavier and Russ have been working on an update. The update is not quite ready (it needs more testing and polishing in Internet Explorer) but today I’d like to give you a sneak preview: The idea with the update is to make it more visually appealing and to provide easy access to the history of a conversation. So you click on a person and it shows you the conversation you’ve had with that person … you’re not overwhelmed with the entire conversation at once (we only show you the last few messages by default) but it’s only a click to see more messages in the conversation. You don’t have to go to a separate page to respond … it all happens on the same page. Much easier! Fingers crossed we’ll release this next Thursday. - Peter
To vote for him go here http://www.redbubble.com/groups/redbubble/challenges/2304-sound Everybodies favourite badass villain, shredding licks on his guitar. This is my first real digital artwork that didn’t take less than half an hour to make. In total i probably spent about 10 hours on this tedious beast. But i am quite proud of it :). The idea came to me when trying to think of a spin on ‘sound’ for the sound competition that didn’t use anything like a speaker or a musical note or something obvious like that. And for anyone who doesn’t know who shredder is, or what ‘shredding’ on a guitar is: / Shredder is the villain from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (at least the one i watched as a kid he was) / and / Shredding (on guitar): is when a guitarist performs a guitar solo really really fast and it sounds extremely awesome.

Final v of a painting that includes Lisa… she remains perhaps the woman I have loved most in my life, long and fantastical tale that it is… / I cannot remember 2004 – to re-iterate – I received treatment for the deadly extent of my depression in the form of ECT or shock therapy. They could not induce a seizure, which is how it works (they don’t really know how it works), and it DOES work (80% success rate short term – vs THIRTY PERCENT for anti depressant. Well-hidden pharmaceutical fact there.) So they literally kept turning up the VOLTAGE to get me to seize. I had two different hospitalizations (apparently) and two sets of ‘treatments.’ / ECT is known for causing memory loss… I read a few books on it (apparently) before I let them do it. Six weeks was supposed to be the maximum amount of memory, of pieces of LIFE, stolen by the desperate final recourse of ECT. / But because of the decision to UP THE FUCKING VOLTAGE, I have lost the memory of ALL of 2004 save 3 weeks or so. The worst pieces of being with lisa are burned within those hundreds of thousands of hours. And perhaps the best. We lived together for a few weeks. Who knows? / I got an email from her yesterday (err the 11th of October ‘07). Synchronous as all hell considering that I had just finished the painting. I have not heard from her in almost two years, not seen her for longer still. Ah, well… I had thought myself over it, but… Tragic farce. Tragic indeed. I think this piece exemplifies a great deal about her, and her and I for that matter. I didn’t realize ANY of the symbolism whilst I painted it – post-painting self-analysis. So - / She is GLOWING, there is light pouring from her. She was like this to see, to touch. She is an intensely alive person. Such passion, a match for my own? I dunno. So different. The floor is also blooming with light beneath her feet. The sky outside the window is split between passion-frenzied cloud and the still sweetness of clear blue. Hm… now that I think about it maybe I AM the dark clouds? Or rather I was. Weird. Cooky. And of course, she is beautiful to the point where she walks around making other people feel ugly just by being there. She moves with a liquid grace ah so of course, of course, her feet are / Not. Touching. The. Ground. / I didn’t think about ANY OF THIS while I painted it. Happens. I am just analyzing it backwards a week later. Now I look at it it seems to me as if she is something of a prisoner of the blue and red darkness around her… wow I wonder who that represents – oi you! Painter boy with the HEALTHY SELF IMAGE! (smacks self with rolled up newspaper and bites himself on the ear.) / There is a guitar pick and a scalpel embedded in the paint. The scalpel… in a few more words it becomes clear…the pick – I wrote a bad song for her with good lyrics – couple of lines – / You are the boiling girl / You are the exception to every rule / You will take my hands / And you will tell me the truth. / Chorus-y bit; / She lies silent now / This girl, my brilliant lover / Then she asks me – how do I devour / MY OWN HUNGER? And I sang to her and sang to her and wrote my most wild hardest most exquisite words and I drew for her and I hurt for her. Finally I HURT her. Yeh… / The vibrant brilliant red border is blood of course… hard to say this but I must hold on, I have to continue to be whom and what I have chosen and fought to be. I must not shy from the truths as ugly as they are as ashamed as they must make me. I have written of it elsewhere on this page perhaps. This woman that I loved so much and so well. What could be more cruel than this? Why the FUCK am I surprised that she is NOT mine? Mad stupid poisonous crippled boy. I can’t write this no not now… but – I found this piece of prose lost from my memory like everything else from that year. Pasted it instead of hitting the paint sticky keys in front of me: / So though I have not returned to the abyss and fallen off the edge again, I still have shit to deal with. I am trying to not work too much – on the recommendation of my psyche and another one. This is how I live though; I need to work it is what I hold onto in the night. Sometimes. / Help gah. I feel totally stripped bare not to mention SHORT I have just seen Lisa and my god she is beautiful my god her beauty is like a fucking river it never runs out like a magic packet of tim tams. Should have answered the door without putting my pants on I should have remembered what looking at her does to me. I know there is no happy ending for this; that there cannot be. I can’t believe I can talk when I look at her… I feel the swell of my passion and lust in the back of my throat choking me; flood of words cut from me even as they bubble with ashes and hope. I am sweating and my stomach hurts. I hate this. I feel completely powerless. I cannot believe she feels the same way I do it is impossible for me to conceive. I am at her mercy an absolute irresolute fool for her; she could crush me so easily, so deeply with the slightest whispered word. / I remember this feeling. I have not felt it since I was a young teenager, a half child already bitter and strange. I remember it; yes. The girl I loved… I left a rose at her doorstep but I had squeezed a piece of barbed wire in my hand and dripped blood all over it. Yeah good work Paul fucking brilliant well I was, like I said, one fucking weird fourteen year old. / But it is like my work; what my work is about. It is always the same thing. The moments are precious to me because they are doomed. It is their fate and brevity that makes them so much sweeter. How to resist something like that – it is some essential part of everything that I believe anyway, and I do not just BELIEVE these things – they are learned from my convictions and turned to articulation and not the other way around. More than my convictions.., it is so real for me, I don’t think anyone really understands but these words do not just represent ideas for me – I feel them continuously, the passing of time treasured and lost. / Perhaps it is only some romanticism, some AESTHETIC truth that makes me fevered and weak in her presence and for hours before and after I see her. Why then do I feel so helpless in its tight ruthless grip? If it is only some concept, a ferocious idea? I am bright enough to see through my own idiocy at least SOME of the time. Though given my recent history I hesitate to believe this. My own stupidity and shame… / She found me, you see. I let this gentle brilliant woman find me dying in the bedroom bleeding and poisoned. I will never, NEVER forgive myself for that brutal act. It doesn’t matter, it CAN’T matter, that I was psychotic with grief and self loathing. How I can do such things and live with myself after and beyond twists inside me like making my father watch while I cut my wrists in drunken fury and hate. Guilt, useless and angry. / Ah hell. What can I do? / Live on. I am in love with her. I wish I could remember. Wish it, yes. Ah well.
Sunday morning. I think Max and I got a little closer than they would have liked.
Some of you may remember the stray/abandonded pup that we took in about six weeks ago…well just wanted to show you her progress and how she is florishing and growing. She is an absolute joy…she follows me around like a little kid and as you can see she even likes to be in the garden with me… / /

Cards Cards Cards / The big news this week is the launch of Greeting Cards – Nearly any image can be sold as a greeting card on RedBubble, any file of about 1Mpix or larger ! The product itself is beautiful, photographically printed, bonded with high grade paper and folded. Here’s what it looks like – Just click the card icon at the top. / / Please make your work avaliable as cards – RedBubble is all about artists choice, you need to tick the box to sell cards. / / / Updates to the Watermarks / So we pushed these out a few weeks ago and had a heap of feedback from confused buyers, not sure if the watermark would be on the final product. / / In response we’ve changed the way we are doing this. There isn’t a water mark on the smaller image so buyers can see it clean, on the larger image we are still displaying the watermark – we’ve tried to make it subtle and explain it a little better while still protecting your images.
You have to kill the girl to save the girl A little book on blurb, quite respectably printed until I find a nice art book publisher who stops sending me refusal letters. 76 pages, a range of works- some of the Devil’s Alphabet, some capriccios, a little bit of Madness. of Sorrow and the end of sorrow, and of course some Magic Tricks. it nicely illustrates where I stand at the moment, painted into a corner and waiting for the paint to dry. You can find it here: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/592298 The preview only shows the first few pages but I put together a set of the complete images, in sequence, here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurensimonutti/sets/72157615410851431/
