Hi – one of the products we’d like to have ready in the next couple of months is a calendar. Here’s our current thinking on how they would look (front cover and inside): (Image by Brent Pearson) The important thing with this design is that there’s not going to be a lot of room on the calendar to make notes. The reason for this is that the calendar will be made from photographic paper backed onto heavy stock (like the cards) which is super expensive. So to keep the cost of the calendar down we’ve developed this design. So the next step is to get some feedback on this design. How important is it to be able to write on a calendar? Any other thoughts / suggestions for the calendar? - Peter

A heads up for group owners and moderators

We normally don’t pre-announce features, but this Thursday we’re releasing two things for the Groups that probably warrant a few days advanced notice to keep the group owners and moderators well-informed. There’ll be no such thing as a ‘Group Owner’ We see the groups as mini-communities. The idea that a community is owned by an individual leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It’s bugged us ever since we launched groups, so we’re correcting it. This Thursday when we release, all of the owner’s “super powers” (editing a group, adding new moderators, editing forums, etc) will be handed over to all the moderators in the group, and the owner will simply become one of the moderators. This isn’t to say that the group owners have been evil or bad, it’s just the idea of an owner that we hate. While we’re at it, the other thing that’s bugged us about groups is the idea of a Moderator. Great communities are led by example, so we’re going to call them Leaders. Groups will be able to set limits for each type of work For each type of work (images, clothing, writing, journals) the group leaders will be able to set a different limit, from none to unlimited and anywhere in between. For example, the Six Word Stories group will only allow written works, and the Agent Provocateur group may choose to only accept clothing works and maybe journal entries. The reason we’re pre-announcing this is because we’re going to take any existing “total works” limit in the groups, and apply it to each type of work. If your group had a limit of 4 works, it’ll now be a limit of 4 images, 4 journals, 4 clothing designs and 4 written works. So now might be a good time for group leaders to have a think about what their group needs, and make the changes after we release on Thursday. — Justin

Your Data, Computers, and ‘not-so-common’ sense.
by Mark GermanAfter hearing a number of so-called ‘horror stories’ from friends regarding the loss of all their ‘most treasured and irreplaceable data’…
After hearing a number of so-called ‘horror stories’ from friends regarding the loss of all their ‘most treasured and irreplaceable data’, I am writing this little entry (in a hurry) to assist those who store any information or data on their computers – and have no back up system If you lose your data on your computer – do not blame the computer or operating system. Not having a secure backup system is akin to leaving your photo albums at the train station and blaming the album when someone walks off with it. As simple as that. There is no excuse for bad backup practices these days – the information is readily available. If you wait till you lose your precious data before doing something about it – well, blame yourself. Back up systems, do’s and don’ts In general Anything stored on Windows in a ‘My’ folder or on the ‘desktop’ is dependent on the operating system. If Windows needs to be reinstalled, your data is no longer accessible – these places are the WORST possible place for anything that is important. Hard disk drives are one of the worst mediums for important and irreplaceable data. They are magnetic, mechanical and electrical. Any of these have a failure, and your data will cost many thousands of dollars to recover. Backing up your data can be done in numerous ways of varying security, complexity and hassle. The choice is yours – make it wisely, and accept responsibility for your choice. DVD/CD – regular backups. / Pros – safer medium. Not too expensive. / Cons – a bloody hassle with the size of data files. Can be slow. Regular/scheduled back-ups to an internal Hdd. / A spare Hdd in your machine which is larger enough to hold all your important data. Make scheduled/regular backups to it. / Pros – easy, relatively inexpensive, fast / Cons – hdd is in same physical shell as original data. If your Pc is stolen, so is your backup. Does not protect from things like fire, flood, etc. Reliant on your PCs power supply. External hdd / Pros – alternate physical unit – usually will not be damaged by your PC’s power supply going ‘pop’. Relatively inexpensive. Fast / Cons – external units tend to overheat quite easily. Physical unit is close to original data, and can suffer same physical damage. Depending on the method used to connect to your PC – can be slower then an internal drive. Raid arrays / Raid0 = no redundancy. Forget it. / Raid1 = mirrored drives (at least 2). 2 (or more) drives are seen as 1 by the OS, and data is replicated across both. This covers you from 1 drive failure. / Raid5/6/1+0/0+1/X – this is information your either know, or need a professional for. Online backups / Pros – off site storage – safest. / Cons – slow, expensive. A good middle-of-the-road system – for data that will hurt if you lose it, but not kill you: External RAID1 unit, under your desk, with an active fan cooling it. / Scheduled automatic+user backups of ALL important data. / There is software that will easily do this for you, like Synctoy. / Can be connected via firewire, usb, or eSata. / Nothing stored to your ‘MY’ folders. / Copy your most important data to dvds/cds and store them at a friend/relative. A 500gb hdd costs around $150. 2 = $300 / A Raid1 enclosure can be had for around $200. / That’s $500 for this system. / Smaller hdds are much less expensive. An 80gb hdd is around $50. If your internal hdd dies – it will cost you thousands of dollars to have it restored by professionals – and it is the kind of thing that only professionals can do. So – in short – be informed, treat your data carefully. Don’t blame computers for your neglect. Ask if anything does not make sense. Edit: / Any computer repair store that you are likely to take your machine to – will not safe guard your data. The first thing that most repairers do when they get your machine, is format your drive, or reinstall the operating system.

/ Tessalated Coast by Peter Martin Ok, so here’s my suggestion (feel free to ignore it) Last year I went to a wedding in Lorne on the Great Ocean Road and saw how well they accommodated a larger group. Seeing as how there are a few RedBubblers who live over that way who missed out on our Melbourne Meet Ups, I thought it might be nice to go visit. Great Ocean Road Cottages in Lorne is not only wonderfully cheap, (works out to about $50 per head or they have a backpackers on site if your want cheaper) but the people who run it are lovely and very helpful. You can make use of the electric kitchens to self cater or go to the cafes and pubs down the road. The cottages are a 2 minute walk from an IGA or 10 minute walk to the nearest pub. (Yes, they have Red Wine) / Erskine Falls Reborn by Michael Eyssens The accommodation is a series of small cottages with a queen bed downstairs and 2-3 single beds upstairs. I’d suggest that we organise ourselves into small groups of 3-5 and book a cottage for each group as they are put together. The cottages are all close enough together that it does not matter which one you are in however they are holding a few close together for us until I get back to them in a couple of days. Staying in Lorne will put us within a short drive of the otways and several lovely looking great ocean road sites if we want artistic inspiration. The cottages, while designed to sleep 4-5, are suitable to entertain a group of people and say, sprawl out a game of twister or something. I’ve called them to ensure that they have enough room for us on the night of Sat October 27th and all is good. My thinking is that we could head over early Saturday, spend a day doing bush things and a day doing beach things. What do you think? P.S – Sorry Jess for ambushing this idea!! / Lorne Pier,Victoria by Joe Mortelliti

How To Organise a Meet Up
by Jo O'BrienMeeting complete and utter strangers off the intern…
Meeting complete and utter strangers off the internet is not easy, even for the most social butterflies, and even if you feel like you know them pretty well from online. The first time I did it, I was meeting 20 bubblers at some pub I’d never been to, and I was supposedly the organsier- I was a nervous wreck! So think about how best to comfort people and make them realise that not everyone on the internet is a scary monster… - meet in a public place where there are passers by / - consider a daytime meet / - ensure any activities include people / - invite attendees to bring a friend or partner along for moral support / - be clear about how to identify each other at the meet up point / - have a way for attendees to contact you/someone on the day / - touch base with attendees prior to the day so they know you really do exist and that it will be going ahead. Inviting People / Well I can tell you how not to invite people- with a vague open ended forum post like “anyone in suchandsuchatown want to meet up one weekend?” This results in three pages of umming and arring and trying to work out details. What you need to do is give it some thought and present a cohesive idea along with the message that you are flexible to other people’s ideas. / Here is an example of how I first suggested a group of us drive 3 hours out of melbourne for a night in Lorne. I suggest having the following details in your invitation post: - A date and time to meet / - A specific meet up location (somewhere well known is best) / - A suggested activity for the day/evening / - How you will identify each other / - How you will contact attendees should there be a change of plans / - How attendees should contact you/someone else should they be late etc. / - Advise people on what they should bring- lunch money, camera etc. Once you have written and posted your invitation in all the right places, (such as a relevant group) people will start to respond. Some will jump in with a big YES!, others will express disappointment at living at the other side of the world, others will ask you to change the date, some will ask you to change other details. When negotiating details, remember that more changes, the more confusing it gets. So don’t feel like you need to bend to every person who can’t make a certain date, or whatever. Some people will miss out – they can come to the next one! A few days before Let attendees know that it is in fact going ahead, confirm the details and get yourself orgainsed. If you have promised them red balloons to mark the meet up point- buy them. If you need to wash your picnic rug, do it. Just trust me on this. You will be nervous on the day itself and are more likely to forget things. Some of my suggestions for the day before are: - charge you camera batteries / - print off a list of people who are coming and any mobile numbers you have for them / - double check any reservations you have and confirm numbers / - Charge your mobile phone and ensure you have enough credit to make several calls / - If you are doing the popular red balloon thing, bring string to tie them to something / - Pack a map, even if you know the area well. It makes giving directions to others easier. / - If there is a reservation, make sure attendees know what name it is under Once you are all packed, leave everything you are taking at the front door or in a pile somewhere like that. On the Day This is the bit where people call you to cancel, rock up late, get lost, and never arrive for reasons you will never find out. - Have your mobile phone on Loud. Boy I have learned this the hard way several times over! / - Be the first person to the meetup point / - Decide how long you are prepared to hang around waiting for latecomers / - Watch out for people arriving / - Introduce yourself with a smile and if your real name is different to your username, introduce yourself with both names. / - Introduce people to each other as they arrive Then you all go off and have a bunch of fun!!! The rest takes care of itself, trust me :) Oh yeah, almost forget… the absolute most important bit of all / post all the photos in a journal post on redbubble so we can all see :)

Well, Brisbane finally took the plunge and we had our first meet where people actually attended!! The lovely Helen (LittleHelen) arrived at my house at 10am Sunday morning to me still in my pyjamas, so naturally I put her to work in my kitchen :p It rained most of the morning and we were a little disheartened as our meet was a picnic in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens! Luckily by the time we’d driven to Brisbane from the Gold Coast the skies were blue and it was hot and sunny! Helen and I put our balloons up and set up our table just as the first Brisbanite arrived! It was a fun, relaxed, enjoyable afternoon and it was wonderful to finally meet some Brisbane artists. Here’s a few pictures from the day! (Jack01 aka Collie also came with her husband Peter and brother Kev but they unfortunately had to leave before I broke my camera out) drec (Derek) says: always Coca Cola GabrielK listening intently to some profound and philosophical conversation no doubt. (and can I just say these photos don’t do him justice! Really beautiful guy! Romanian and something else if I remember correctly lol) Drec (Derek) tries to come to terms with Kathleen’s psychic powers Kathleen does her best “no really i’m sweet and innocent” face That infamous soccer game! GabrielK pretending he doesn’t know i’m taking (another) picture of him Scott Robinson charges his solar panel for the long walk home Food! Kathleen uses all her jedi mind powers to shrink an unsuspecting guy and his park bench Drec (Derek) has farted and is hoping nobody’s noticed Steven Lippis explains to everyone how his birth defect has impacted upon his life. Gabrielk isn’t interested as he’s perving on that blonde chick in the bikini Helen Every pic I took of Helen is blurry because everytime I went to take a pic of her she’d make me laugh! (And when I dropped her home she invited me in for coffee (wink wink nudge nudge :p) Cake Face! Steven Lippis and the birth defect

The Red Bubble Office Break up in Sjem, Lucan and myself paid a special visit to the offices of Red Bubble on Sunday to see if the place of artistic dreams was everything we had assumed it was and hopefully as affluent as it looked in all those journal entries. / Sjem and I had arranged to meet Lucan in a back alley of the appropriately named Gore St. / Lucan if you aren’t aware by now has been dead for over a decade and it was only his substantial abuse of hallucinogenics that had seeped into his bones that tricks his rotting corpse that he is still alive, anyway he’s handy for sneaking into tight areas and clicking a camera – though he doesn’t half stink. / Sjem couldn’t find a babysquatter for his offspring (imaginatively called sonofsjem) so we were now a team of 2 humans and 2 half humans. But it turned out sonofsjem was very adapt at retrieving things from small spaces too. / We found the office (eventually) masquerading as an inner city flat, the only proof it was the Red Bubble office was a small 6×3 inch sign. / / / / Entry wasn’t a problem thanks to some Ruinbubble TM patented door breakers available through the internet. The first thing we saw was a converted garage furnished in mid 70s faux-brothel look. There was nothing worth taking except for a large projector until Lucan tried to take it down and got one of his arm stuck and it snapped off inside the housing. / We went up to the second floor and found the offices of Red Bubble. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. The whole place had a desperate air about it, it looked like the whole place could be snatched up and moved in minutes as if waiting for a tip off that the police were coming. Either that or it was very lax – 25% of the place was made up of kitchen. / / Lucan’s covered face because he looks disgusting and he was scaring the baby. We didn’t venture upstairs for that is where the tech people work and there was drool seeping down the stairs. We thought it best to leave that area be. Our first impression was we’d been conned and there was nothing worth stealing. Even the computers were filthy, so we decided to have a bit of fun. / I sat down at Jo O’Brien’s desk and was filled with the desire to remove my top, Lucan threatened to rip off his other arm so he couldn’t take pictures unless I stopped. / For some reason there were hundreds of copies of In The Moment lying around and sjem thought it would be funny for me to read them some of the stories, as per the photo you can see the only way they could get me to do this was under duress. / / This particular desk belonged to Xavier which was evident due the large hunks of hair and toenail clippings. Young sonofsjem was starting to smell as bad as Lucan so we needed a clean area to change the ittle tacker, the cleanest desk was the one that looked like it had the least activity: Peter’s. / / In the corner was an unsightly mess of tee Shirts and toys that belonged to Onetonshadow, after sifting through it all and finding nothing of value we decided just to set fire to his desk. / / All up it was pretty boring and we did minimal damage but did manage to eat all the buscuits and guys if you’re reading this just a word of advice: / DON’T eat your lunch at your desk till the cleaners come. wink wink

I’m looking for nominations of what to cull out of my portfolio, I have my eye on a fair bit of my earlier work which well for me isn’t up to scratch. My difficult is I find myself to be my toughest critic so I’d like to open this up to anyone that wants to name any images they think don’t belong, I’ll compare that to my own list and then let the culling begin. I currently have 75 works for sale and I don’t know that feels like too much so I’m looking to cullt 10-25 at a guess, that said I don’t want to be like a overzealous gardener and prun it back to hard. So feel free to jump in and nominate any number of shots to go up onto the chopping block, if a image has already been nominated still list it as more votes will spell doom for the image in question.

Well it was another successfull Melbourne Meet Up We are all getting so friendly- it’s great to see. This time we had a record turn out, so much so that most of us can’t remember everyone else’s names yet! But it was great to see lots of fresh faces and meet you all. You better come to the next one! We ate lunch, walked around the botanic gardens, got lost and few times, had numerous toilet and caffine stops, did cartwheels (well, Jess did anyway), saw some pretty gardens, drank red wine and enjoyed each others’ company. Can’t wait for the photos to start coming through. Everyone is linking to their photos HERE if you are interested PHOTO LINKS Michman’s facebook album James Broadway’s online album / and one of Jess Ann van Alkmade whoalse’s has an online album from today ...and these… Mark German’s shots as follows… Daijiro Kato’s shots follow…

I have had heaps of people ask me how I get the laminate or card of my image in the description section of my images, so I thought I would put it down in a journal entry rather than having to re-type it each time. It’s actually the same process as linking to any other image…just open up the image you want to use in the buy/preview option then choose how you want the image to appear ie. laminate with black border. Right click on the image go to properties (bottom of tab) then copy the image address-url, paste that in between exclamation marks in the description section of your original image, then if you want to link to it put a semi colon, then copy the url of the image page. So the code would for example look like this (when you are doing it leave out all spaces) ! http://images2.redbubble.com/img/art/border:blackwithdetail/product:laminated-print/size:small/view:preview/386042-1-orange-sunset.jpg ! : http://www.redbubble.com/products/configure/1156590

A little while ago I was contacted by Eliza Grey from the Advocate (the newspaper that services the North West coast of Tasmania) asking if I would be interested in participating in an article about RedBubble. Of course I was only too happy to oblige being as RedBubble itself and all you wonderful people in the RB community have helped me so much in my journey as a photographer. When the photographer from the Advocate came out to take a few pictures to accompany the article, I took him down to the boat ramp as the views down there are magnificent! I was a little apprehensive though… See, we were having a king tide at the time, and when he asked me if I would be game enough to go out to the end of the jetty which was all but underwater I had to think twice… It wasnt me I was concerned about, HE WANTED ME TO TAKE MY CAMERA OUT THERE!!! It all turned out well in the end though, both myself and my beloved Sami survived the experience and below is the result. Many thanks to RedBubble and every-wonderful-one who has made me feel so welcome here.
