Ian Rilen was a legendary Sydney rock and roller and a member of bands such as Rose Tattoo, X and Sardine V. He died earlier this year and is much missed for his wild and wonderful ways. I found this candid back stage shot of him and his then wife Stephanie preparing to go onstage at the Trade Union Club in Sydney’s Surry Hills way way back in the early 80’s. They were in Sardine V at that time and when I look at this shot now the eighties rush back. Oh my misspent youth. :) So Vale Ian Rilen, I so hope things are rocking were ever you are. This shot is for you.

John Simon Ritchie, better known as Sid Vicious, was an English punk rock musician, the bass player of the Sex Pistols and solo singer. Punk rock is an anti-establishment rock music genre and movement that emerged in the mid-1970s. Groups such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, and The Clash were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. By 1977, punk was spreading around the world.

God Save The Queen was originally called No Future. The band played it live and recorded a demo version with that title, but changed it when lead singer Johnny Rotten got the idea to mock the British monarchy. This became an anthem for the Punk movement in England. It expressed the anger young people felt toward the establishment. The press loved the Mini on it’s launch in 1959, but sales were unimpressive, but when well known celebrities such as Paul McCartney and Twiggy became owners that the sales went through the roof. I’m pretty sure the Italian Job also had plenty to do with sales post 1969. The scene where the robbers’ Minis are chased through a sewer tunnel were filmed in the Sowe Valley Sewer Duplication system in the English city of Coventry.

A slightly different crop of one of Melbourne’s famous lanes that are covered in Graffiti, this one being Union Lane that runs off Little Collins St… Saw this drain pipe and couldn’t resist it so took a couple of photos and stitched them together, I really love the little character at the bottom left hand corner of the pic! I started this painting many years ago and never finished it. I’ve been working on it recently and here it is; hence the date 2008 on it. My wife and I and our children spent a happy afternoon at Stoke Bruerne and even went on one of the barges. We passed the famous barge used in the English children’s TV series Rosie and Jim, which sort of dates this painting. FEATURED IN FIRST THINGS GROUP – 14th September 2009
