These Chunkies have been very therapeutic to create over the holidays, whilst taking a break from red bubble and having my family around. I have many more to come, and although I won’t be on RB as much, I hope to also be doing some serious painting this year…so i look forward 2009 with much anticipation …

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is a slow filter feeding shark that is the largest living fish species. It can grow up to 12.2 m. (40 ft.) in length and can weigh up to 13.6 metric tonnes (15 short tons). This distinctively-marked shark is the only member of its genus Rhincodon and its family, Rhincodontidae (called Rhinodontes before 1984), which is grouped into the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea. The species is believed to have originated about 60 million years ago.

portrait of robin barker / ...and there’s a biiig wave and Robin dives deep to avoid being battered by the weight of the water; she manages to come out the other side taking a big breath when she resurfaces. When she reaches the rocks she sees a bright blue flash – ‘oh it’s you’ she says. Robin picks up a small rock and manages to break open a sea urchin and watches the Big Blue Groper gorge on it’s innards. Until now Hector hasn’t been caught by the evil fishermen because he has had a magic spell cast over him that makes him sense danger – there are also two magic mermaid witches who taunt spear-fishermen. The two mermaids deter the men with spear guns by blinding them with the reflections of pearl shells and telling the beautiful blue groper to ‘run away, run away’.
Taken in the underwater tunnel at Deep Sea World in North Queensferry, Fife near Edinburgh. It was down to luck that the shark appeared where it did and everyone turned to look.

Here’s my first foray into underwater photography – so much fun! Fish are great, so are sea snakes, but this jelly fish caught my eye and the whole scene seemed so serene…
