  • !! ! I recieved a phone call from a friend at Uluru who told me that it was / “Raining on The Rock” I had only ever seen it with solid blue skies after numerous visits. I said to my wife “put on your lippy, were heading for Uluru! We left Melbourne a few hours later, the distance from Melbourne to Uluru/Ayers Rock is 1170 miles / 2000 kilometres, we stayed one night in Burra an old copper mining town and one night in Coober Pedy where most of the worlds Opals are mined. Coober Pedy is like the wild west ! We arrived at the Uluru / Kata Tjuta National Park around 3pm after driving through wonderful torrential rain with low visibility for hours. I dropped my wife off at the resort and drove like crazy the next 14 kilometres deep into the area where Uluru sat so majestic, it is so large that from 10 kilometres out you feel like you could almost reach out and touch it. The rain hadn’t eased , I was shooting with Agfa Ulta Proffesional film which was only 50 ISO, so very slow with exceptionally high colour saturation. / I didn’t think I would have enough light to take a shot! As I drove closer the rain started to ease and would you believe the sun came out, I stopped my car in a non designated area, grabbed my camera and looked through my viewfinder. I was using a Leica R8 with a 200mm lens, / It was too powerful and I had to run into a field of “Ouch” thisles behind me to get the whole of Uluru in the frame. As I walked backwards I slipped and twisted my ankle ‘Big Ouch” but I had to get the shot !!! I finally had it all in frame ..Click.. Gotcha..click..Gotcha, then,oh no, I was out of film, couldn’t believe it !!! I hobbled back to the car, changed the film over, looked up and the cloud was gone!!!! I didn’t see the results for 3 weeks, had to wait till I arrived back in Melbourne to take the film to the pro lab, when I collected the proof sheet they told me I had a winner. I was overwhelmed with the result, I don’t believe there is another image like this anywhere. I hope you enjoy this image Ronald Rockman / / SHOULD DEFINITELY BE VIEWED LARGE! / THIS PIECE IS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AS A: / • Card / • Canvas Print / • Framed Print / • Laminated Print / • Matted Print / • Mounted Print PS I had over 550 hits on this image and 195 favourites before I accidentally deleted it , Ha LOL !!! / ! / ! / !!Pastel red to burgundy and spinifex to gold, / We’ve just come out of the Mulga where the plains forever roll. / And Albert Namatjira has painted all the scenes, / And a shower has changed the lustre of our land. And it’s raining on the Rock, / In a beautiful country, / And I’m proud to travel this big land, / As an Aborigine. / And it’s raining on the Rock What an almighty sight to see, / And I’m wishing and I’m dreaming that you were here with me. • 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! Camera Model Canon EOS 50D / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 30 / Av( Aperture Value ) 3.5 / ISO Speed 3200 / Focal Length 18.0mm / Flash at 1/16 power and about 12 or 13 paper towels for diffusion. “One Night Under the Milky Way” was shot at Flamber Head on Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail For more information please visit Brian’s Homepage or on Flickr
