  • Earth Shadow at Uluru. / © Ern Mainka As twilight deepens a dark band rises upwards from the horizon, The band is the shadow of the Earth on the atmosphere. Immediately above, where the evening air is still lit, glows a pink band called the anti-twilight arch or “Belt of Venus”. The pink arises from scattered and deeply reddened sunlight mingling with the deep blues of the eastern sky.

  • Another late afternoon in the desert. These storm clouds lingered overhead for a while… but no rain was delivered. There is something magical about the sound of the wind through the kurkara (desert oak trees) on a hot afternoon as a desert storm approaches. Image captured September 2008 at Uluru. • Uluru can be seen for miles, and yet is hard to get a good shot of. It is so big and the foreground so insignificant the size of the rock and the distance you are from it just does not fit in a camera. This was taken on the walk around Uluru, when there were some trees near it ,and someone had driven in from outer space, so I walked back out along their tracks. The place I called ‘Echo Cave’ some weeks ago is over on the right of the picture. Taken with a Pentax Z1p and Pentax 28 mm shift lens on Kodachrome 200 film
