Image captured this afternoon on my walk around Uluru. Having been thoroughly drenched by yet another stormy shower (I had to wrap the camera in a plastic bag), I was amazed to turn around and find this beautiful view as the rain cleared and the sun returned. The rock is sacred to the local Anunga Aborigines. Ayers Rock is the popular English designation (named after Sir Henry Ayers, a 19th century Australian governor). Uluru The Worlds Largest Monolith I recieved a phone call from a friend at Uluru who told me that it was / “Raining on The Rock” I had only ever seen it with solid blue skies after numerous visits. I said to my wife “put on your lippy, were heading for Uluru! We left Melbourne a few hours later, the distance from Melbourne to Uluru/Ayers Rock is 1170 miles / 2000 kilometres, we stayed one night in Burra an old copper mining town and one night in Coober Pedy where most of the worlds Opals are mined. Coober Pedy is like the wild west ! We arrived at the Uluru / Kata Tjuta National Park around 3pm after driving through wonderful torrential rain with low visibility for hours. I dropped my wife off at the resort and drove like crazy the next 14 kilometres deep into the area where Uluru sat so majestic, it is so large that from 10 kilometres out you feel like you could almost reach out and touch it. The rain hadn’t eased , I was shooting with Agfa Ulta Proffesional film which was only 50 ISO, so very slow with exceptionally high colour saturation. / I didn’t think I would have enough light to take a shot! As I drove closer the rain started to ease and would you believe the sun came out, I stopped my car in a non designated area, grabbed my camera and looked through my viewfinder. I was using a Leica R8 with a 200mm lens, / It was too powerful and I had to run into a field of “Ouch” thisles behind me to get the whole of Uluru in the frame. As I walked backwards I slipped and twisted my ankle ‘Big Ouch” but I had to get the shot !!! I finally had it all in frame ..Click.. Gotcha..click..Gotcha, then,oh no, I was out of film, couldn’t believe it !!! I hobbled back to the car, changed the film over, looked up and the cloud was gone!!!! I didn’t see the results for 3 weeks, had to wait till I arrived back in Melbourne to take the film to the pro lab, when I collected the proof sheet they told me I had a winner. I was overwhelmed with the result, I don’t believe there is another image like this anywhere. Driving along this almost deserted highway we spotted this Love heart, somewhere between Uluru and Kings Canyon. An amazing piece of work, literally in the middle of nowhere. Hence the title, Love is all around…even in the middle of nowhere….. Uluru is an amazing place, filled with rich vibrant colour and steeped in tradition and story time. I took this photo on my last trip to Uluru. The sunrise had just finished and the tourist buses were beginning to leave. This gave me a great opportunity to capture the rich colour at this time of day but without the crowds. It is 348 m high with most of its bulk below the ground, and measures 9.4 km in circumference. It lies 335 km south west of the nearest large town, Alice Springs. Uluru is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, the Aboriginal people of the area. It has many springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings. Uluru is listed as a World Heritage Site.
