This man favoured central Odessa and our paths crossed more than once during my stay there. This morning, however, I couldn’t resist sneaking a shot as he snoozed there on his bench. I’m very glad I did as he shaved off that magnificent beard no more than a week later… If you like what you see, please feel free to add me to your watchlist. Oh, and should you wish to see more, clicking on an image below will take you to its viewing page. Enjoy!

Towards the end of the 10th century, the city probably had its own rulers. It was there that the Black Grave, one of the largest and earliest royal mounds in Eastern Europe, was excavated back in the 19th century. / -—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / this is the model of the town from XII century:

Watercolour It’s been almost 10 years since I was in the Ukraine, but one of the most memorable sites I visited was St Sophia Cathedral in Kiev. There are seven beautiful golden domes that can be viewed from a higher viewpoint and catacombs that can be explored underground. I own a watercolour of that higher view that I bought from a sidewalk artist for ten American dollars and it proudly hangs in my home today.

I never set up my shots and I never ask people to pose for me – but there was a huge element of luck here. I could not have positioned this silhouetted stranger (and his interesting shadow in the late afternoon light) in a more central spot, even if I tried ….. I was shooting reflections on the marble flooring at 333 Collins Street here in Melbourne. I was standing near the lifts, looking through the vast atrium towards the main doors. I’d shot one frame when I noticed this person walking towards the exit. Immediately, I could tell that he was a visitor and not someone who was employed in this amazing workplace. How did I know that? Because he was looking around and admiring the beautiful view, pointing out aspects to a companion. As I hit the button, he stopped for a split second and craned his neck. I was just lucky with the timing and his position in perfect alignment with the main doors. His body language says it all – that atrium is a spectacular sight. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5,6, 1/15sec, ISO 800, focal length 21mm. 117-9582
