Trying something a little different with this shot. Taken at night but modified by increasing the exposure values by a lot. Creates an interesting effect. This is one of the many famous bridges in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Known sometimes as ‘the eye bridge’ , but its proper name is the Millenium Bridge. In the background on the right is the Baltic Flour Mill which is now a contemporary art museum. ( note the little space invader in the upper window) ;) Processed using the same settings and processes as the Brighton Pier picture, that so many of you were very kind with your words about.

Taken lying on the floor with the lens of the camera sticking through a hole in some wire mesh on a fence. I was forced into looking a bit crazy because I didn’t have my tripod with me.

we were out for a walk on the quayside in Newcastle and the gulls were going crazy, managed to get this one catching a piece of bread and even managed to get half the tyne bridge in !!!! lucky or what :-)

Another view of the Ryhope Pumping Station, a Grade II (starred) listed building in the North East of England. This lovely gothic style building hosts two 100 horsepower beam engines for pumping the water, which are even still occasionally fired up by the kind team of volunteers that now operate this site and make it available for the public to visit.

Spanish City is in Whitley Bay (UK) and was a place where tourist would flock too. It has the most beautiful beaches but unfortunately there has been a decline in the urban side – however, saying that there is apparently a commitment for regeneration. What makes me sad is that we allow things to fall into this kind of disrepair in the first place – beautiful places like this are blighted by closed down hotels, pubs, amusement parks and cafes. This is part of my college project.

Newcastle Civic Centre. At the north end of the Ceremonial Way, mounted on the Otta slate flank wall forming the link to the Council Chamber, is the majestic bronze sculpture of the River-God Tyne by David Wynne – some sixteen feet (4.8 m) high and two and a quarter tons (2880 kg) in weight which, in its time, was the largest bronze figure to be erected in this country since Rodin’s time. It is further unique in that water pours from his elevated hand drenching the body and symbolising his significance as the allegorical god of the Tyne.

An uncharacteristically normal shot for me, not a bit of peeling paint or broken window in sight! Taken on a recent wander along the river, this is Newcastle / Gateshead’s Millennium Bridge, known locally to a lot as the blinking eye bridge. The entire structure rotates through 40 degrees when pushed by the three hydraulic rams at each edge, lifting the coloured archway you see here and the walkway slung from it high into the air to allow ships to pass underneath.

This series of steps leads up from The Side towards a gated wall. This area of Newcastle near the river, was part of the original crossing point and lead up in to the upper parts of the city. It is now also famous for the Side Gallery , a little gem of both a building and photographic gallery. The wear of the steps bear witness that the remains of houses and business that once thrived here, once had happier days. Converted in to black and white

This is a view down the mighty River Tyne from the swing bridge with it’s old wood jetty pointing down river like some old barge. Like a half remembered ghost of the trade that once and still does flow along this river. The river separates Newcastle and Gateshead and yet such is the relationship between the two sides of the river, there is a wonderful number of bridges connecting the two banks. In front the first bridge is the classic Tyne bridge , with the Gateshead Sage building glistening in the wet light underneath, while beyond lies the modern “winking eye” bridge. This foot and cycle bridge links the redeveloped riverside of Newcastle to the reinvent Baltic Flour Mill, now known for it’s contemporary art shows. Wikipedia © / St. Mary’s Lighthouse is on the tiny St. Mary’s Island, just north of Whitley Bay on the coast of North East England. The small rocky tidal island is linked to the mainland by a short concrete causeway which is submerged at periods of high tide. / While it no longer functions as a working lighthouse, it is easily accessible (when the tide is out) and is open to visitors and has a small museum, a visitor’s centre, and a cafe. / The lighthouse and adjacent keepers’ cottages were built in 1898 by the John Miller company of Tynemouth, using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. It was built on the site of a monastery where a small sanctuary light would have acted as a guide to passing ships. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984. This is the River Ouseburn as it nears the River Tyne, in the City of Newcastle. Part of the Ouseburn Trust regeneration area as a thriving cultural centre, this was once the heart of Newcastle’s industrial past and the remains of old lead works can be still seen, which leads to the title of the picture. For this is where some of the lead dug from this landscape would ended up to me made into ingots or the final end, be it lead sheeting for the roofs of the growing roof scape of civic and religious buildings, the windows and in the ships that would sail from here into the North sea.
