  • Regeneration
    by Deborah Parkin

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Spanish City is in Whitley Bay (UK) and was a place where tourist would flock too. It has the most beautiful beaches but unfortunately there has been a decline in the urban side – however, saying that there is apparently a commitment for regeneration. What makes me sad is that we allow things to fall into this kind of disrepair in the first place – beautiful places like this are blighted by closed down hotels, pubs, amusement parks and cafes. This is part of my college project.

  • The Toon at neet
    by David Parkin

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Words and music by Jimmy Nail . . . it’s called Big River, and about the River Tyne that you see in my photograph. Walking on cobble stone, little bits of skin and bone / Jumping on the tram car for a ride / I can remember then, I was just a boy of ten / Hanging out along the old quayside / Not all the capstans and the cargo boats / And stevadores are gone / To where all the old ships go / But memories just like the seas live on That was when coal was king, / The river a living thing / And I was just a boy, but it was mine, / The coaly tyne This was a big river, / I want you all to know that I was proud / This was a big river, but that was long ago, / Thats not now, thats not now My fther was a working man, / He earned our living with his hands / He had to cross the river every day / He picked up a union card out of the neptune yard / Mouths to feed and the bills to pay / Then came a time for him to sail across the sea / And far away / Finally when the war was won / You brought him home and home he stayed And when his days were done, under a golden sun / You carried him to where he longed to be, / Back to the sea This was a big river, / I want you all to know that I was proud / This was a big river, but that was long ago, / That’s not now The Neptune was the last to go, / I heard it on my radio / And then they played the latest number one / But what do they do all day? / And what are they supposed to say? / What does a father tell his son? / If you you believed that there’s a bond between our future / And our past / Then try to hold on to what we had, / We build them strong, we built to last Cause this is a mighty town, / It’s built upon solid ground / And everything they tried so hard to kill, / We will rebuild This was a big river / I want you all to know that I was proud / This was a big river, but that was long ago, / That’s not now / This is a big river, / And in my heart I know it will rise again / The river will rise again

  • Pumping Station
    by Richard Shepherd

    US$3.42–US$91.20

This place, unusually for me, isn’t derelict but it was so nice a building i couldnt help but take a few shots of it. This is the water pumping station at Ryhope in the North East of England. This pumping station opened in 1868 and operated for 99 years providing drinking water to the Sunderland area before closing in 1967.

  • Blue Rainbow
    by Jaybe

    US$3.42–US$91.20

The Sage with Newcastle’s Tyne Bridge alongside.

  • Revolver
    by Richard Shepherd

    US$3.42–US$91.20

This is the nice wooden revolving door into the offices and main reception of an abandoned shipbuilding yard on the Tyne in Newcastle. I love the irony of how ornate this area of the building is, but as soon as you get through the door out of the right of this frame then you are out into a dirty oily production plant.

  • QE2
    by David Parkin

    US$3.42–US$91.20

The most famous cruise liner in the world, the QE2, arrived on Tyneside for the last time today (Wed Oct 8th 2008). The Cunard vessel berthed at the Northumbrian Quay in North Shields on this morning, although it was not open to the public. The liner departed from the Tyne at 2200 and I was there to see it with my friend Mark Gardner and his lovely girlfriend Dee.. In November the QE2 will sail for Dubai where she will become a floating hotel. It was bought by investment group Dubai World for $100m (£55m).

  • 3 lighthouses
    by Mark Gardner

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Taken at South Shields, the Groyne Lighthouse is a well known landmark and the lighthouses in the distance mark the entrrance to the Tyne Docks. / It was very windy and the sand was shifting and a lovely golden colour, it was a glorious day, well any day you can spend at the beach is glorious :-)

  • Mirror Image
    by Richard Shepherd

    US$3.42–US$91.20

This is another shot of the Ryhope Pumping Station, a 140 year old water pumping station in the North East of England. It is reflected perfectly in the water still stored in it’s reservoir at the front of the building. This structure is now Grade II (starred) listed and considered to be one the finest industrial monuments the region has to offer. This site is very reminiscent of the other pumping station in the area at Dalton however this one has been renovated and is still in action today, albeit as a steam engine museum.

  • Pumped uphill
    by Richard Shepherd

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Another view of the Ryhope Pumping Station, a Grade II (starred) listed building in the North East of England. This lovely gothic style building hosts two 100 horsepower beam engines for pumping the water, which are even still occasionally fired up by the kind team of volunteers that now operate this site and make it available for the public to visit.

  • Service annex
    by Richard Shepherd

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Strapped on the side of this abandoned ship works is a tiny little tin plate annex used to cover a set of emergency stairs and pipework from the various sinks and toilets around the building.

  • Steps O' Doom
    by Richard Shepherd

    US$3.42–US$91.20

These steps have obviously take a bit of a battering over the years, they have certainly seen better days!
