  • This is a photo taken one dawn from a friend’s balcony through the Wollumbin Valley out into the Tweed Valley in Northern New South Wales. This a beautiful part of the world.

  • Royal Border Bridge spans the River Tweed between Berwick-upon-Tweed (the northernmost town in England) and Tweedmouth in Northumberland, England. It is a Grade I listed railway viaduct built between 1847 and 1850, when it was opened by Queen Victoria. The engineer who designed it was the famous Robert Stephenson (son of George Stephenson). It was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and is still in regular use today, as part of the East Coast Main Line. The bridge is 659 metres long. It has 28 arches (only a few arches visible here), constructed of brick but aesthetically faced with stone. The bridge is 38 metres above the river itself. In the 1990s it underwent significant repair work for the first time. Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. • What a place to enjoy this stunning sunrise over the misty tweed valley outside Peebles in the lovely scottish borders. • ....and here he is doing what looks like a happy dance! The last in a sequence of five heron shots taken here in Peebles on the lovely river Tweed. • This is two of the three auto exposure bracketted shots merged in photomatix. The boat moved too much in the longer exposure for that one to be useable. The Rous River is a tributary of the Tweed, and is basically surrounded by cane farms and mountains. We’re in the middle of one of the largest calderas in the world, I believe….a monster volcano from even before I was born! Canon 5D, 16-35mm at 16mm, f/10, 1/60”, ISO 50, tripod on a moving boat…

  • Here on the lovely river tweed near Selkirk in scottish borders the salmon are swimming hard against the flow to return to their spawning grounds upstream without stopping for a bite to eat and have a tough job trying to leap up some of the many obstacles in their way… I caught this slippery customer at a salmon ladder outside selkirk in the scottish borders but already the light was against me…. the spray on the lens from the falls didn’t help much either… Taken from this side of the river he was was leaping near the opposite bank in the very top left hand corner of this : / Settings at full zoom on a compact Olympus SP560 UZ were shutter priority ..f4.5, 1/500sec, ISO 80… / Any comments, tips or suggestions most welcome ;) What I really should have done was drive at least a 10mile detour to find a bridge , cross the river and grab a machete to cut my way through to a better spot on the opposite bank where the lighting at least would have been better… Of course when i see the amazing works by the skilfully talented dsargent / like this and this I wish I could do it over … / But at least I caught something – and you should have seen the ones that got away…............ teeheehehee …....... / :))

  • This is the Union Chain Bridge, which spans the River Tweed, bwtween Horncliffe, Northumberland, in England and Fishwick, Borders, Scotland. We visited this lovely bridge whilst on holiday. / “Before the opening of the Union Bridge, crossing the river at this point involved an eleven-mile round trip via Berwick-upon-Tweed downstream or a twenty mile trip via Coldstream upstream. Although work started on the Menai Suspension Bridge first, Union Bridge was completed earlier. Today it is the oldest suspension bridge still carrying road traffic. It lies on Sustrans Route 1 and the Pennine Cycleway.” I can’t think of a more beautiful and serene crossing. Just standing there listening to the birds in the trees, the river below, the gentle breeze that was moving the clouds on, and my young children screaming from across the other side…. ahhhh, peace. This is a view from the Scotland side towards England. This is a HDR image combining 6 bracketed shots using Photomatix Pro for Macs. Slight adjustments in lighting and contrast were made using the enhanced details tool. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll / 28-300mm IS zoom lens / f/14 / 1/5, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/200 / ISO 125
