On special days, the Turkmen people dress their beloved Akhal-teke horses with celebratory neck bands. Gazan’s is red.
Not many foreigners visit Turkmenistan, a central Asian country which is 90% desert.
Neutrality day is 12th of december or also called Bitariplik. A big ceremony was held in the Olympic stadium with 50 Akhal-Tekes
I was visiting an Akhal-Teke stud close to Iran, about an hour outside of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Just before we arrived at the stud, we met these boys, who took these young mares out for a walk. In fact, it was their first time out in the desert as tehy have just been broken to saddle.
This is one of the young Turkmen mares going out for a walk in the desert.
This is Polotli II, born in 2006 by Piyada the actual TOPSTAR Akhal-Teke in his homeland Turkmenistan. Polotli is considered to become better as his father. He is said to be a horse that only gets born once within a century. He is owned by the Presidential stables, where I was priviledged to take this picture. This stud is outside of Ashgabat and not open to the public.

The Akhal-tekes are one of the oldest, and rarest breeds of horses in the world. Originating from what is today Turkmenistan, they belong to the thoroughbred family, like English thoroughbreds and Arabians. One of the most beautiful things about Akhal-tekes is the metallic sheen they often have to their coat. The images in this calendar are all of the same horse: Gazan, a ten year gelding living near Vienna in Austria.
