A Sydney Northern Beach sunrise over Turimetta.
Took this photo on one of my early morning expeditions to Turimetta Beach on the North Shore of Sydney. I love being on the coast at dawn, especially when there is a dramatic sky and a lovely sunrise. High tide at this beach is interesting because the water cascades over a large rock shelf creating interesting swirling patterns if you use slow exposures. This is not HDR, rather a blend of several exposures.
This is my first shot trying out a new idea… I call the technique “painting with waves” and it allows me to use multiple images of waves breaking to create a composite with the mood and drama that I am interested in. I hope you enjoy it. If you would like to see how I did it, then head over to my blog where I explain the technique step-by-step. Look forward to hearing what you think. Brent
This is another one of my water painting experiments…. Processed this one with a more intense stylistic look. this image is a blend of three RAW captures, 1 for the sky, 1 for the background and another one of wave hitting the rock. See my earlier work for details.
A Sydney northern beach light show early one morning.
This was taken when I went to Turimetta with a couple of mates of mine. Please don’t ask me where that is because I travelled in the back seat sleeping! :S Here are similar shots: / Here are a few categories to take a look at: /
Amazing sky this morning. 22/08/08 – Wow…Thank you everyone for the comments. I really appreciate them all. Im very humbled to be on the front page!
This is a location that is pretty well known to Sydney photographers… Turimetta. I have been shooting the heck out of it lately because it was in a very lovely state… sand had been ripped out of the gorge and also the Spring weed was in full bloom. It took me 8 visits over 3 weeks to finally get the weather conditions that I was after. I guess it shows that persistence does pay off. BP
This was another shot from my study of Turimetta. There is something about this location when storm clouds are around… the quality of the light just makes this location come alive i a storm. I never get tired off shooting this gorgeous place… everytime I go there I come back with different shots.
Single long exposure converted to b&w. Thought it suited it ok
Another glorious winter’s day on a Sydney beach … I wrote a long Description for this shot, then lost it all on first attempt to upload when connection dropped out. Grrrrr Basically it was about light and colour and the futility of capturing it evenly at this time of day, in the sun, without on-lens filters. 5dmk2, 24-70, 0.9 soft grad nd, hoya, x400, 27mm, iso 50, f22, 30 seconds, single RAW file, Turimetta Beach, noon, August 2009, ok!
According to this image’s EXIF, it is the 15,000th image I have taken with the Canon 5D Mark II. I love my Canon 5D Mark II. I still love my Canon EOS 10D, but my Canon 5D Mark II is my BFF. Once again I am enjoying the colour enrichness provided by using the x400 9-stop filter, aka the Black Glass on the awesome EF 24-70 f2.8L Zoom Lens, this time at 48mm. The low ISO 50 helps dramatically in achieving length of exposure, this one over 20 seconds at f10. As I am want to do, I shot this as a single RAW file, and cropped and sharpened it. The image was shot at Turimetta Beach, my new best beach friend, around noon on a bright and clear winter’s day in August 2009. Best viewed large Did I mention I love my Canon EOS 5D Mark II? While shooting at Turimetta Beach again today, I met an old local codger, a retired astronomer who uses a Leica M8 to shoot every crook and cranny of this Sydney secret. He told me about the rock carvings on the south headland by a local stonemason, the midden around the corner, about his attempts to shoot nesting kestrels, and about the ship offshore laying optical cables which I was at that point shooting. I also showed him the infra-red converted EOS 10D while taking these shots, and lo and behold, the sun behind the cliff behind us was putting on a show, so I shot it with the 10D as I was setting up the other shots on the tripod with the EOS 5D Mark II: Ship To Shore was shot with an EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM Zoom Lens at 24mm with Hoya x400 Filter and Lee 0.9 Soft Grad ND Filter, ISO 50, f8, 15 seconds, single RAW image, cropped and sharpened, cross-processed. Location: as above. Best viewed large
The combination of sunlight and storm clouds and my BFF beach made me reach for the infrared camera on this occasion, a converted Canon EOS 10D. Please view large, if only to see the footprints.

Yet another failed attempt at shooting a stormy dawn on the Sydney coastline. Bugger. Why can’t we get some of that deep grey cloud cover that say, poms get, or even some of that cyclonic stuff the banana benders get all the time, or even just a tad of the usual stormy Victorian weather. Geez, I dunno. Maybe I should stick to waterfalls. This image was taken back in August 2009, on the same shoot as this one: The Monochrome shot was taken a few minutes later. The settings were the same except this one was shot over 67 seconds, but I had to hurry to get the cloud happening before it changed, and as a result got a significant amount of spray on the lens, which I have only now cleaned up in PE. This evening just before sunset I returned to Turimetta Beach, this time armed with the EF 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS Zoom Lens with a new Hoya HMC ND x400 Filter (58mm) on the Canon 5D Mark II. On previous shoots here, I had rued sticking with wide angle lenses, and really wanted to try a longer focal length. Fortunately being only 58mm, the required Black Glass was cheap as chips. This image was shot at 115mm, ISO 50, f11 at 30 seconds. It was shot in Landscape as a single RAW file.
