  • It was a beautiful crisp cold day in County Mayo on Irelands west coast not to far from the bustling town of Westport when we stopped our mad dash tour out to Achill Island. Where I stood to take this shot there was a house beside me but the next one that I could see was this small bungalow in the distance with the kitchen fire obviously burning peat which was the smell that hung on the air ever so lightly.

  • I took this shot from the Windsor turf farms today while following a storm which hit about 5 minutes later.. It is an HDR shot and I think HDR was the right choice as it shows details in both the sky and landscape.. / I have always wanted to try and get a storm shot while down at the turf farms because the scene just looks so typically australian to me.. / I decided to include the gate to break up the scene a bit and add something more to view than just turf and the sky.. / Anyway as usual all comments and/or thoughts are welcome.. / Thanks for having a look! • I watched a major battle today between a male Eastern bluebird and a dominant male sparrow. This beautiful young male was fighting gallantly for his turf, but I don’t know what the outcome will be. Sparrows have superior bills and don’t give up easily. It’s a shame they rival bluebirds for nesting boxes as they don’t have to have this kind of nest; they can pretty much survive anywhere. The bluebirds had already constructed the nest, but the female had not yet laid her eggs. That’s a good thing as I’ve seen sparrows enter a nest and destroy the eggs. Let’s hope for a good outcome!

  • If birds could talk, I think this bluebird would tell me, “You don’t say!” in utter incredulity at the message I just imparted! Isn’t it fun to put words in the mouths of our feathered friends. Bet they’re shaking their heads and saying, “Those poor humans; they just don’t get it, do they?” This Eastern bluebird has such expressiveness in his face he’s bound to have some decidedly strong opinions bottled up inside his pretty little head.

  • Not many pictures from me recently as work is manic at the moment and my ME is ‘troublesome’ but, just to keep things ticking over, here is another from our Shetland holiday in May. / This is one of the many peat cuttings on the island of Yell. I always look at tpeat cuttings and hope that one day I will get the photograph I want to capture these places. I have a long way to go before I please myself but this is closer than most! The photograph has been adjusted in Nikon Capture NX2 to bring out the details and then, in CS3, a gradient map has been hard mixed with this ‘original’ to create this effect. Thanks for looking and apologies to all of you who have been uploading photographs that I haven’t managed to get round to looking through. • I have been neglecting my B&W work for a while, but just had to shoot this for that purpose, albeit with a little SC in it. This is the handrail for the Turf Locks Pub at the beginning of the Exeter Ship Canal, near Exminster, Devon. I love all the grooves in it, worn away through years of wear and tear, and also shaped by the weather. I wonder how many people have had their hand on this ? / What stories would it tell if it could talk ? Thank you for looking. / Hope you like it. • Oils (16×20 inches) original sold A painting depicting Ireland in days past. Autumn in Ireland and the man is returning home with his cart of peat. This is an old painting I did several years ago, entirely from my imagination. We still use peat (turf) in Ireland and love the smell wafting through the air during the long, cold winters. Every year, at about this time, on country roads in County Clare, you will most likely slow down to a snail’s pace as you drive behind an ancient tractor (with an even more ancient driver… :-) ) loaded with peat. When the load is brought to your home, be prepared for a few hours of hard, back-breaking work as the huge load of peat must be stacked neatly in a pile. Nothing beats cooking on the old range and the warmth spreads through the house and food tastes so much better. The kitchen is the best place to be on a cold day!

  • Oils (16×20 inches) Bringing home the peat, in years past, when the donkey-cart was a familiar sight on Irish roads. This is a sight that many old eyes will remember fondly. Tired and hungry, he will be impatient to enjoy his meal of cabbage, spuds and maybe, if he is lucky, a piece of bacon. But it will be some hours before he will reach home yet. In the background, the small piles of peat are neatly stacked like little pyramids – drying out in the field. This fellow has loaded his cart and will now take the long road back home from the bog.
