Moroccan Octopi at the Tsukiiji markets in Japan
Chopsticks, or ‘hashi’ [割り箸]. These were sitting on a counter outside a street restaurant in the Tsukiji-jo area by the fishmarket in Tokyo; a street filled with pavement eateries. ‘Hashi’ is also the Japanese word for ‘bridge’.
I have a favourite place to sit in the streets around Tsukiji and sat there the other day for a half-hour, just soaking up the street and the people. This lady stood out.
Fish wait for a buyer at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. The largest fish market in the world by a ridiculously wide margin, Tsukiji sells around 450 different types of seafood at any one time, with about 2,200 different types being sold over the course of a year. Approximately 4,000 tonnes of seafood gets sold every day and around 12 million people will eat something sold at Tsukiji every day. They’re mind boggling numbers. These fish are at one of the 1,500 small wholesale stalls which sell to small retailers and restaurant owners. The whole area is a hive of activity in the early morning, when the people who will eat for lunch the fish sold here are still fast asleep.
The Tsukiji area of Tokyo is probably most famous for its fish market (of which the outer market is shown here), but it’s also home to some nice temples, great waterfront and wonderful people. Not to mention the number of sushi restaurants!
The Tsukiji Fish Market, in Tokyo, is world famous. I found these for sale in the outer market. Some of the best sushi in the world can be found only blocks away. On the morning I made this image I had sushi and beer for breakfast…mmmmm.
Tsukiji, Tokyo. 2008.
The enormity and volume of everything happening at Tsukiji fiskmarkets in Tokyo is overwhelming. The sounds and smells, the catch, the energy, and sadly the waste!
Its early in the morning, pre-dawn, and the pace and bustle of Tsukiji Fishmarkets in Tokyo are already at manic proportions. Watch your step and watch out. Deliveries are waiting to happen.
Now, but antiquated, Japan can be full of contradictions, and the treatment of sea animals is one of those.
An amazing experience watching the auction. However, don’t wear thongs to this place as other tourists unfortunately found out.
