Red Pandas are found in the temperate forests of the Himalayas and some high mountain areas of China and Myanmar (Burma). Anatomical features indicate Red Pandas are most closely related to the racoon and similar to giant pandas and bears but are now in a ‘family’ of their own. Like Giant Pandas, Red Pandas have an extra ‘thumb’ which is simply an enlarged bone. In captivity Red Pandas can live up to 14 years but it is not known how long they live in the wild. / The Chinese name for Red Panda is hunho or firefox, due to their colour and similar size to a fox. The red panda was first discovered in 1821, 48 years before the giant pandas were found in 1869. The major threats confronting Red Pandas are loss and fragmentation of habitat due to deforestation; poaching for the pet and fur trades; and competition from domestic livestock. The fur of Red Pandas is used to make hats and clothing by local people in China. The fur hat with its long, luxurious tail at the back looks beautiful and warm. In Yunnan Province, this type of hat is still desired by newlyweds, because it was regarded as a talisman for a happy marriage in the past. Tropical butterflys, not native to Oregon. These came from Costa Rica. Because they are not native to Oregon, they can’t release them at the end of the display. Because the Portland Zoo is not outfitted to support them year round, they destroy them when the season is over.

The King Vulture Portrait…... Please view this bird larger he is stunning ! ... (-: The King Vulture, is a large Central and South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. The adult King Vulture is the most strikingly colored of the New World Vultures. King Vultures have lived up to 30 years in captivity, though their lifespan in the wild is unknown. This vulture uses urohydrosis, defecating on its legs, in order to lower its body temperature. Despite its bill and large size, it is relatively unaggressive at a kill and will normally back down rather than fight.The King Vulture lacks a voice box, though it can make low croaking noises and wheezing sounds.Its only natural predators are snakes, which will prey upon the vulture’s eggs and young, and large cats such as jaguars, which may surprise and kill an adult vulture at a carcass. The King Vulture feeds solely on carrion and, unlike some New World Vultures, is not known to kill sick or dying animals for food.It often eats stranded fish along river banks, but does not come to village refuse dumps for food.Though it has keen eyesight which can help it locate food. There is evidence that suggests a decline in population, though it is not significant enough to cause it to be listed.This decline is due primarily to habitat destruction and poaching.

This ones for you J… ~ One of the many beautiful birds to be seen on that world tour adventure… The Macaw can reach 76-86 cm (29.9-33.9 inches) long and weigh 900 to 1300 g (2-3 lbs), making it one of the biggest parrots in the world. It is vivid in appearance with blue wings and tail, dark blue chin, golden under parts and a green forehead. Its beak is black, and very strong for crushing nuts. The naked face is white, turning pink in excited birds, and lined with small black feathers. There is little variation in plumage across the range. Some birds have a more orangey or “butterscotch” underside color, particularly on the breast. This was often seen in Trinidad birds and others of the Caribbean area, and appears to be due to environmental factors.[citation needed] The Blue-and-yellow Macaw uses its powerful beak for breaking nutshells, and also for climbing up and hanging from trees. Rockhopper This species of penguin occurs in subantarctic waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as around the southern coasts of South America. The Southern Rockhopper Penguin is classified as Vulnerable species by the IUCN. Its population has declined by about one-third in the last thirty years. Their common name refers to the fact that unlike many other penguins which negotiate obstacles by sliding on their bellies or by awkward climbing using their flipper-like wings as aid, Rockhoppers will try to jump over boulders and across cracks.

I hope you see something in this ….. / there is just something about seeing three different birds. in a swamp…....... in the damp moist muggy.. habitat…..... each surviving. each leaving for now to do each do their thing. The wingos the anhinga must be tried. and this ritual of the wings spreading takes sometimes a good ten to fifteen minutes.. The stork eats its food.. the egret is patiently waiting for its next food source. and then watch out. it will spear it with that amazing beak .. Parrots have a pan-tropical distribution with several species inhabiting the temperate Southern Hemisphere as well. The greatest diversity of parrots is found in South America and Australasia. Parrots, along with crows, jays and magpies, are some of the most intelligent birds, and their ability to imitate human voices enhances their popularity as pets. I thought I’d try a hand at doing some smaller artworks – which actually are more of a challenge for me as I am used to working on a larger scale.
