Hats never go out of fashion. There might not be much need for a trilby or a stovepipe hat any more, but milliners are doing a roaring trade.

This is an old picture that I painted, which basically gives thanks to one of my favourite artists James Abbott McNeill Whistler. He was not only a superb painter but an eccentric dandy showman who lived the role of artist. I could go on all day about Whistler’s persona, suffice to say, I included a butterfly because this was how he signed his paintings. He makes me remember how important aesthetics and skill are in art. Whistler would never put an unmade bed , urinal or a pickled fish in an gallery under the umbrella of art.
