  • Little boy in a village about 2km from Bac Ha in northern Vietnam.

  • This young boy is looking out of his family home window in a Bishnoi village about 80km outside Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. The kindness and hospitality that his family showed towards my wife and I will never be forgotten. And they never asked for a single rupee.

  • The January fog was thick and the cold bone-chilling in Sapa, a colourful hill station in northern Vietnam.

  • Mummification was a very important element of the Papuan culture, the preserved body of a village’s big man, an elder, chief or a great warrior was regarded as a link with ancestors. The process involved hanging the corpse in a specially build house over a fire, and smoking it continuously for up to a year. Indonesians regarded the tradition as barbaric, prohibited the procedure, confiscated and destroyed most of the mummies in the area. This is one of three survivors in the Baliem valley. The smoking process doesn’t protect from rodents though – you can see the teeth-marks all over the hands of the mummy. Baliem valley, 15 km from Wamena, Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua).

  • Taken in Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • I often perceive human features in nature. We all are capable of / developing our visual acuity the more we look at nature’s beautiful creations displayed on the bark of trees, flowers, leaves, rocks, water etc. These two leaves live very close to the leaf ladies in my portfolio that are part of their tribe. displaying magnificent colors in their faces. I enhanced the texture and color to accentuate these multi-colored leaves that had fallen from a tree creating a wonderful abstract composition. The top leaf presents different images when viewed as a profile or full face that reminds me of a puppy or a heart etc…. The imagery within the larger leaf and the surrounding environment offer a lot of material to project your unique perceptions. As usual the more I look the more I see. I just saw a blue alien on the left behind the large leaf. I took this photograph with a Macro lens to enhance the detail of the magnificent colors in their faces. The members of this leaf tribe live in a very colorful garden on the hill behind my house so I can visit / them, especially in autumn and winter when they fall from the trees. /

  • Earth Teach Me to Remember / Earth teach me stillness / as the grasses are stilled with light. / Earth teach me suffering / as old stones suffer with memory. / Earth teach me humility / as blossoms are humble with beginning. / Earth Teach me caring / as the mother who secures her young. / Earth teach me courage / as the tree which stands alone. / Earth teach me limitation / as the ant which crawls on the ground. / Earth teach me freedom / as the eagle which soars in the sky. / Earth teach me resignation / as the leaves which die in the fall. / Earth teach me regeneration / as the seed which rises in the spring. / Earth teach me to forget myself / as melted snow forgets its life. / Earth teach me to remember kindness / as dry fields weep in the rain. / Ute, North American /

In 1971 Congress passed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act which settled land and financial claims and provided for the establishment of 13 Alaska Native Regional Corporations to administer those claims. Similar to the status of the Canadian Inuit and First Nations, which are recognized as distinct peoples, Alaska Natives are in some respects treated separately from Native Americans in the United States. • This Hamar Girl has just made a purchase at the weekly market in Turmi – Omo Valley, Southern Ethiopia. The Hamars are one of a number of tribal groups living in this remote region – 24 hours by road (mainly dirt) from the capital, Addis Ababa.

  • Part of a series of shots I took in the Democratic Republic of Congo when I was a volunteer photographer on an Aid trip. Nikon D200 / 50mm prime lens.

  • Mien or Yao in northern Thailand were expert poppy farmers, until the practise was effectivery banned in the late 1990s. This women wears the traditional indigo dyed, hand woven turban of her tribe. The women decorate their pants, turbans and baby carriers with exquisite and colourful cross-stitch embroidery. It is usual for young babies and children to accompany their mothers to their fields. Taken in the early 1980s with a Nikon FM2, Nikkor 135mm lense and kodachrome slide film.

  • Guns are ubiquitous in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley. AK-47’s are so common that they’re almost part of the traditional dress – like jewelry. These Karo men, high above the Omo River, are probably not as dangerous as they look. I’ve been told that they only shoot eachother.

  • The Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta), often called the Rhesus Monkey, is one of the best known species of Old World monkeys. The Rhesus Macaque is well known to science owing to its relatively easy upkeep in captivity, and has been used extensively in medical and biological research. It has given its name to the Rhesus factor, one of the elements of a person’s blood group, by the discoverers of the factor, Karl Landsteiner and Alexander Wiener. This species is found all over India – and because of it living in close proximity to humans – it is completely unafraid and bold to the point of being aggressive. I’ve had them barge into my flat verandah and try and get into the house!! PS: This was sitting infront of a green wall eating Jackfruit (I think) and I was able to approach to within 5 feet of him. I perhaps got a little too close to this one as I got some serious aggressive behaviour just as I clicked this! PS: Renamed this pic as after watching Godfather for the 101st time last night – I saw a bit of this monkey in Luca Brasi!!! Another one from the tribe:
