  • The intricate etchings on the bark of this this tree offer fascinating images that I was fortunate to discover walking to my car in West Hollywood, a suburb in Los Angeles. I took several photos of graffiti trees using my Macro lens and selected those that have multiple images, colors and texture. In this composition I perceive a vast landscape with villages, people and mountain trails. The graphic details on this tree remind me of the primitive imagery of cave art. There are many icons to discover and I always look forward to your projections in my series of graffiti trees.

  • This is the “Old Moat” in the Dutch city of Utrecht. When the old arm of the Rhine river that used to flow here started silting up in the middle ages, part of it became canalized and new canals connected the remnants of the river with the nearby river Vecht. The resulting canal (created in portions from the end of the 11th century) then provided a great transport route between the river systems of the Netherlands and the South and North Sea (the south see now being known as IJsselmeer). During the High and Late Middle Ages, countless massive, semi-fortified houses were built along the canal, many of which can still be seen today (although usually with an unrecognizably altered front gable). The low water table created by dikes and locks in the middle ages created the opertunity for the inhabitants of the canal-side houses to extend their basements underneath the road and have a doorway leading directly to a wharf on the waterside, creating the unique, medieval, two-level road system that is still perfectly in tact and a contender for addition to the UNESCO list.

  • From my children’s story “Once Upon A Winter’s Turning”, originally published by Wooden Books. The tale features a young lad from Kernow called Drew Widdershins. When a dose of the flu looks like it’s going to scupper the village’s Winter Solstice celebrations Drew, along with the stones from the local stone circle on the moor, must track down the ingredients for his mother’s heal-all herbal remedy. This book has been out of print for some time now, so I’ve decided to offer those illustrations from the book that would make ideal greetings cards or prints. / Also available as a greetings card / Also available: Drew Widdershin’s Magic Calendar
