This happy, colourful picture of an ageless yet youthful nude singing and playing playing guitar while seated above her circumstances on a pure white wall speaks of freedom and vibrant life. Set amongst a rainbow staff with treble cleft and music notes, and next to a piano complete with vase and cherub, this painting has the feel of something from an earlier, happier, simpler time. Indeed if you look closely, you’ll find that the woman, instruments, pottery and wall – all human-made items – are painted from the same colours; the only vibrancy (with the exception of the paint on the vase) comes from nature and what transcends nature – the human soul, and spirit.

Every Valentines’ Day I can sit back and relax knowing that I’ve spread a lot of love with my crocheted hearts. This one was done for my daughter. It has a white bubble stich heart in the centre and is surrounded by a red heart done in various stiches, but mostly trebles. This year I’ve also covered wire circles, rescued from the streets after falling off car wheels, with ribbon saved from pyjamas bought as Christmas presents. I practice Scrapscraft, recycling, an African tradition of making something from nothing, using up all the leftovers and found objects. when I was a child, I was very ill. After every bout of illness where I had days or weeks off school, I would create something. It was usually crocheted, sometimes knitted and rarely machine sewed.
