Hi all! / I’m heading down to Victoria next week for a whole week of nothing but photography and relaxion!! I can picture my self there now….no kids, no hubby, no phone….just me and my camera! I haven’t been away on my own for quite some time now….so this trip will be good to rejuvinate both my mind and body! / I’m told there is some beautiful scenery where I’m going, so I think the photos will turn out ok! / Then, when I return, it won’t be long before I will be heading to outback Queensland with a girlfriend, we will be going across Sturts stony desert, catching plenty of Barra, and going to Longreach….can’t wait! / When I get back, you will see where I’ve been! / Take care fellow bubblers!

These were from my trip a few months ago to Europe that I never got around to looking at until a few days ago. Shot with a D200 + 17-55 with an ultra light (dodgy) Manfro tripod. Pretty easy to guess what city it’s taken from.. :) 1) / 2) / 3) ISO800, F2.8, 1/100, 22mm / 4) – Shot from the hip to avoid unhappy responses from random ppl :) /

Made it back in one piece from Mexico last Friday night. More stories and many more photos to come as soon as I feel like being a computer nerd again. Almost crashed just a couple hours from home though. Put the last of my fuel treatment in my motorcycle tank but forgot to zip the side bag back up. Got up to highway speed and the bike started bucking and I almost went down. When I pulled over I saw that a long sleeve shirt had blown out of my side bag and got caught up in the sprocket and chain. Scared the bejesus outta me, but it could have gone much worse. And… get this… it happened in Shertz, Texas. Exactly one week ago today (Wednesday) I was in the middle of the Mexican desert… dancing with Mescalito… and in the middle of a 3hr task of making a giant 15ft peace sign on the desert floor out of about 5lb stones. In a place where few will ever see it. I worked in stone because that’s the “medium” I had handy. I didn’t make it for an art show, or as an installation for anyone to view. I created something that was an international symbol that crosses language barriers… and the idea of which weighed heavy on my mind. Click to View PEACE

As of Friday morning I will be fighting jet-lag as I cross the Atlantic for a long awaited trip home. We will be spending 3 weeks in Eastern Canada and a fourth week in California. I hope to add lots of photos to my collection. So for the next four weeks you won’t be hearing much from me, although I am sure I will pop in from time to time. I apologize in advance for not being able to respond to all of your comments or comment on your new images. I’d just like to thank everyone for all of your kindness, friendship and support. Have a lovely summer and I look forward to seeing all of your work when I return!

and fellow Bubblers … I want to say a huge thank you for looking at my work and leaving your wonderful comments … I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you all. / I do try my best to reciprocate and comment on all your work as well but time does tend to get away from me and I find I have missed so many people. I am off on my travels again tomorrow morning as I am going to visit a very dear friend of mine who moved from this area last August to buy a farm near Newcastleton and I haven’t seen her for a year so I am really looking forward to that as I miss her terribly. I used to help her with her eight horses so I’m looking forward to seeing them too as I miss them almost as much as her! Keep up the good work my dears and I’ll see you next weekend. Take care of yourselves and each other. Namaste

Consciousness greets me in the morning with the satisfaction that last night I had sorted all the miscellaneous bits of my travel stuff into neat collections – lest I arrive back in San Francisco in two weeks with an unmanageable pile of junk. My first challenge of the day is to master the waffle maker. I’ve seen them in the motel breakfast area quietly mocking me – “hey you foreigner! Can you handle the hot cast iron and get to the waffle glory?”. I carefully re-read the instructions and work the magic to get a quality waffle – I am almost a citizen at this rate. I drive out of Torrey and decide I need to visit Hillary – I saw her last night as I was driving past and decided that she needed my attention. I take several shots of her curves at several angles and experiment with a few exposures. She’s got a wonderful look and you’ll see more of her soon. In Fruita I go to school and shoot the national park ranger writing lines in a 110 year old single room school house. What a life in the middle of canyon lands with no one around except a few pioneer families. On the way back to Torrey I stop for another experiment in North American espresso coffee and trip up over pronunciation of mocha. After a few smiles with the beautiful waitress international relations were resolved and coffee was served. Interestingly the mocha wasn’t as sweet or chocolaty as expected. Off to Bryce Canyon national park. Stop and look and explore at the several places along the road. Interestingly some others manage to pull up their transportation, get out, look at the magnificent views and get back in – even before the engine has stopped spinning. You have take some minutes to read and walk down a trail or two when you’ve come so far. Now I must say that when you are at 9000 ft the lack of oxygen can impair your judgement. I can also add that the Ford Mustang is wonderfully responsive and just cruises along down slopes without a worry in the world. It also cruises a little too quickly past the park police SUV coming in the other direction. Now when pulled over by police in a foreign country all sorts of things come to mind – including not to try the first two excuses. I wonder, for a brief few minutes as they check my details, if I’m going to be sharing a cage with an angry brown bear or just a guy called bubba. Thankfully a cautious reprimand saved the day and my constitutional need for one phone call – mind you this could put potential citizenship back a bit. Travelling to Richfield in the afternoon a wonderful person called Kara greeted me at the Fairfield Inn and a comfortable room was found. A quick conversation revealed the best Chinese food around and an extra serving of sesame chicken for Kara. It also revealed that shopkeepers have little markers for checking for forged notes – black bad, yellow good. Aussie plastic notes don’t need these marker tests. A little shooting on the gun range while waiting for the Chinese revealed I needed to improve my technique. Just have to trust the gun sight a little and carefully squeeze the trigger. Sorry no stuffed toy for me from the Richfield Fairground. At the end of the meal the fortune cookie said “your next week will contain something new” – today contained several new things.

Going on a long holiday can bring a lot of photographic opportunities. The thing is that if you also take one of the new breed of 20+ megapixel cameras like the Canon 5D mk2 then you have to think of a way to managing all that data you’ll generate. Thus I have packed some travel companions as shown below. HP 2140 netbook This is the business level of HP netbook offerings. The regular consumer level HP netbook has a plastic case and fairly small 60GB HDD. This 2140 version is a little more expensive but comes with a more robust, and sexy, aluminium case and a 160 GB HDD. / So far it has been very useful and more than capable of handling the several GB data generated each day. Unfortunately the slightly low 10 inch screen resolution although all right for web surfing can stymie the use of software like Photoshop or Canon DPP – they both need 1024×768 where the screen is 1024×576. Otherwise the LED backlit screen has reasonable colour fidelity. / For connectivity HP has two USB ports, an express card slot, a network port, wireless LAN and an SD card reader amongst other things. Ideally an additional USB port would be useful. / To do basic image stuff I’ve loaded Irfanview which handles basic image manipulation and opens RAW files and allows me to post some reasonable looking stuff here on the Bubble. Alas all the HDR and careful manipulation has to wait until a rendezvous with a bigger and better screen on a regular PC. / Other software includes WiFi detecting software, MS office, VLC media player and Skype (which can use the built in web cam) Sandisk Extreme Card reader When Dealing with large cards you need a good high speed reader so you don’‘t spend your time in a hotel room watching a progress bar. I use this Sandisk USB2 based one. File transfer is pretty quick and helps to doesn’t tie up much time. / Interesting note not all Sandisk readers are as good as this one. You do pay for what you get – this isn’t the cheapest version around. It reads both CF and SD card formats. Seagate Freeagent Go 320GB This is a little (using a 2.5 inch notebook hard disk) external drive does a great job of keeping a copy of the images safe in case bad things happen while on the road. The drive doesn’t need additional power which is very useful. / The other advantage is that the drive comes with easy to use backup and sync software. Options include the ability to encrypt the data on the drive. / For the fashion conscious the drive comes in a number of colours. For the geek conscious you can get capacities up to 500GB.

Hi everyone, I’m back in Melbourne after a few weeks holidaying in the USA. I had an awesome trip and already miss the nice warm weather. I have uploaded a few shots from my trip to RB with probably a few more to come over the coming days. Over night my view counter ticked over 80,000 which is more views than I ever could have hoped for, I suppose that’s the beauty about online galleries that anyone anywhere in the world can look at your work! This is one of the more interesting things I saw on my trip in the USA, a rat on a cat on a dog! My favourite image from my trip so far is San Francisco Days My most popular image in my photostream is still very much Hosier Lane with almost 200 comments over 100 favourites and over 5500 views. I suppose I don’t really have a favourite image, I think that’s like preferring one child over another! I just hope I can keep learning and improving and keep taking inspiration from the wonderful people on redbubble.

No, it wasn’t the PM (though i did ironically receive the official “the PM is very busy” dinner rejection letter while she was here). It was none other than the RB celebrity SOXY FLEMING and her daughter Fleur!! So excited were we, that we completely overlooked a photo oportunity, until right at the last minute when i snapped off a ream of hold-the-camera-in-front-of-us snaps, which were then sent to the “Cool Lab” for cool processing. / It was far too short a stay, but we managed to cram in lots of conversation, a little wine, an impromptu music recording session, and my 6 year old son will most likely propose to Fleur at his earliest opportunity! i hope to see a lot more of these gorgeous creatures when i next venture down south. / Thank you, girls, for sharing some of your precious time with me. It was a pleasure :)
